Lyr. Add: ROYO GROUN'

Royo Groun' where we kill that sperm whale,
Heave away, Royo.
Oh, Royo Groun', captain, where we boun' from,
We are boun' from Royo Groun'.

An' we comin' home from Royo,
Heave away, Royo.
Oh, fare-you-well, Juliana, my boy,
We are boun' from Royo Groun'.

Royo Groun', our lucky groun',
Heave away, Royo.
Oh, Royo Groun' where we bid dem good bye,
We are boun' from Royo Groun'.

Royo Groun' where we kill an' come home,
Heave away, Royo.
Oh, captain, gunman, where we boun' from?
We are boun' from Royo Groun'.

Captain, harpooner, where we boun' from?
Heave away, Royo.
Oh, Royo Groun', Mason killed that sperm whale,
And away, Royo.

Very reminiscent of Rio Grande.

Sorry for broken post- the doorbell.

"Sometimes we does catch a sperm whale, well, we have a shanty on that. Anywhere, we meet the fishes dem, we call it "Royo groun'."
We take a fish, we say it's from Royo Groun', it's a lucky ground. This Royo is a *river in America, you know, Royo Grande. It's jus' a lucky ground."

(*The Rio Grande of the well-known chantey is, of course, South American)

"We're Bound for the Rio Grande" seems to be the parent of this shanty from the West Indies.

Pp. 82-83. Verses following musical score in text:

Heave away, Royo.
Oh, fare-you-well Juliana my boy,
We are boun' from Royo Groun'.

Royo Groun' where we kill an' cut in,
Heave away, Royo.
Oh, Royo Groun' where we kill an' cut in,
We are boun' from Royo Groun'.

Roger D. Abrahams, 1974, "Deep the Water, Shallow the Shore," American Folklore Society, University of Texas Press.

"Royal Ground" is used here for a "sweet spot" fishing ground.

I have searched for other uses of the term, but haven't found any?

Any other examples of the term in literature or song?
