As Jeri mentions, the Mitchell/Hamer version is based on Martin Carthy's recording of the song.

Carthy's tuning on this is: C G C d g g

Ray Fisher set the words to the Breton tune "Son ar Chiste" (The Song of Cider) which was written in 1930 by a piper. (From this thread. A lot of people (I believe) are familiar with Martin Carthy's playing of this.

You might be able to figure out the tuning from him tuning on this video of it.

I can't answer the questions, but the song can be heard and seen here:

That sounds like an old dance tune to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Does anyone familiar with the version of Child Ballad "Willys Lady",as played by Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer, know if he plays in a standard, open, or some other tuning?   Any ideas are appreciated!
