".... Robert Emmet and Belfast man Henry Joy McCracken."
I believe these songs are invaluable as carriers of certain aspects of 'oral history', but often their importance lies in the reason that they were made rather than their historical accuracy.
A little later than the 'Age of Revolution' but I wonder if you'll get round to dealing with one of my childhood heroes, John Mitchel who fought to free Ireland from "the chains of slavery" but was was quite happy to go off and support the Confederacy in its attempts to maintain slavery in the US.
Many of these songs are fascinating in the fact that they carry the 'feelings' of historical events, but often their partisan nature makes them unreliable, or incomplete.
Take a look at the ballad of '98, 'Ballyshannon Lane' and compare it with the horrific reality of the Scullabogue massacre (covered in some detail in Thomas Pakenham's 'The Year of Liberty').

Perfect, Mike. Who would have thought Athena would be so vulnerable?

But "becoz"?---you've been spending too much time with teenagers online.

Looking a little further ~~ one of her other godly 'hats' was "just warfare". That's OK: she would have the Wisdom to know that Warfare against me would not be Just, becoz I am in the right!

Athena was the Goddess of Wisdom, not of War.---

Wikipedia — In Greek religion and mythology, Athena or Athene (/əˈθiːnə/ or /əˈθiːniː/; Attic: Ἀθηνᾶ, Athēnā or Ἀθηναία, Athēnaia; Epic: Ἀθηναίη, Athēnaiē; Ionic: Ἀθήνη, Athēnē; Doric: Ἀθάνα, Athānā), also referred to as Pallas Athena/Athene (/ˈpæləs/; Παλλὰς Ἀθηνᾶ; Παλλὰς Ἀθήνη), is the goddess of wisdom

— so her subjects & verbs should have agreed better, shouldn't they? Grammatically, O Mick-o'-Mayo, she was clearly not my match, however wise!

What a disappointment ,the speakers on my PC went kaput last night , so I missed the program !
Re the grammar .I copy and pasted the title "Herosongs: Where History and Song Meets" from the facebook page sent out by Athena. I think you've met your match at long last MgM - you can go and take it up with the Goddess of War!

There are exceptions. Not so many in Ireland.

BTW: is the title of the series correctly cited here? It is ungrammatical ~~ should surely be "meet", not "meets"?

Not sure that generalisation will hold, Dick. The Agincourt Carol? Battle Of Harlaw? Chevy Chase?

History is written by the winners; songs are composed by the losers.

In most stories about heroes I've come across, from any culture, the death of the hero is a key part of the story. King Arthur, Robin Hood, Heracles, all the gods in Asgard, Harry Potter (he gets resurrected, but that's a diffferent matter)

Works in real life too - that's a major reason Nelson and Lincoln are popular heroes in a way Wellington and Washington aren't (dying in your bed well on in life doesn't count).

I give up on creating the 'blue clicky'. The link above will get there but anyone capable of using mudcat can find the station.

Looks interesting. Will see if I can remember it and set Audacity to record. I think we are about six time zones apart. I am assuming one can go to the Radio web site and punch the "Listen" button.

Starting this Sunday . Athena Media's latest radio series 'Herosongs: Where History and Song Meets' begins on July 14th at 7pm on RTÉ Radio.1

How do popular ballads shape our version of history? What makes a hero and how important has song been in shaping the popular image of that time, and that hero? And in Ireland does failure rather than triumph define heroism?

This eight part series is an Athena Media production for RTÉ Radio 1 and is presented by singer and academic Therese McIntyre, who traces the journey of ballads from the 16th century to today and explores how they shape or distort our understanding of history, real events and real people like Henry Joy McCracken in 1798 or Jim Larkin in 1913. For more information click here:http://www.athenamedia.ie/news-details.jsp?id_news=275 and listen to our promos here: http://audioboo.fm/users/42600/playlists/8696-herosongs

The series is made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland Sound and Vision Scheme
