I believe these songs are invaluable as carriers of certain aspects of 'oral history', but often their importance lies in the reason that they were made rather than their historical accuracy.
A little later than the 'Age of Revolution' but I wonder if you'll get round to dealing with one of my childhood heroes, John Mitchel who fought to free Ireland from "the chains of slavery" but was was quite happy to go off and support the Confederacy in its attempts to maintain slavery in the US.
Many of these songs are fascinating in the fact that they carry the 'feelings' of historical events, but often their partisan nature makes them unreliable, or incomplete.
Take a look at the ballad of '98, 'Ballyshannon Lane' and compare it with the horrific reality of the Scullabogue massacre (covered in some detail in Thomas Pakenham's 'The Year of Liberty').

Looking a little further ~~ one of her other godly 'hats' was "just warfare". That's OK: she would have the Wisdom to know that Warfare against me would not be Just, becoz I am in the right!

What a disappointment ,the speakers on my PC went kaput last night , so I missed the program !
Re the grammar .I copy and pasted the title "Herosongs: Where History and Song Meets" from the facebook page sent out by Athena. I think you've met your match at long last MgM - you can go and take it up with the Goddess of War!

In most stories about heroes I've come across, from any culture, the death of the hero is a key part of the story. King Arthur, Robin Hood, Heracles, all the gods in Asgard, Harry Potter (he gets resurrected, but that's a diffferent matter)

Works in real life too - that's a major reason Nelson and Lincoln are popular heroes in a way Wellington and Washington aren't (dying in your bed well on in life doesn't count).
