Subject: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Jul 13 - 10:21 AM Well, I'm apologizing again...it's been too hot to spend much time at the computer, including Mudcat. Our monthly shanty, forebitter, and ballad song session will be happening this Saturday, July 20th, at The Press Room on Daniel St. in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Last month's session was outstanding! Tom's been maneuvering well with just a cane, so it looks as if the only advisory is weather. Wish I could promise cooler weather for Saturday, but according to AccuWeather, it's not going to drop below 90F until Sunday. I'm sure our singing can raise quite a breeze, though. See you at The Press Room! Linn |

Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: NbptErnie Date: 17 Jul 13 - 11:12 PM Hi Linn, See you on Saturday. Ernie |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Jul 13 - 08:18 AM Good, Ernie! It's been too long! You've been missed. Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: sciencegeek Date: 18 Jul 13 - 09:07 AM it looks like Mike & I will be there, as well.... if the car doesn't melt... lol we'll be at the launching of the Morgan on Sunday... not sure where we'll find seats - so BYO looks good. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get to NH to avoid heavy traffic - no AC in car. |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Jul 13 - 06:26 PM I've tied up in Maine with family responsibilities. So I'll have to miss this one. However, I will be heading down to Mystic with two friends for the relaunching on the Morgan on Sunday, and then stopping off at Gloucester on the way back north on Monday to join the sea music session at the Dog Bar. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 Jul 13 - 12:27 PM We'll miss you, Charlie. (I'll PM you soon about something completely different...) Looks as if there will be a few people there tomorrow who haven't been around recently. Stephen Craft says it's been too hot to be on the boat, so he's going to try to be there. Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 19 Jul 13 - 11:32 PM I still hope to get to one of these, but not this one. I am one of the people who hopes to get to the launching of the Morgan, but it is beginning to sound like that will be quite a crush. (Satellite parking? Shuttle buses? Standing room only? Yikes!) http://www.mysticseaport.org/event/morgan-launch/ For the Press Room Shanty Sings, I am thinking October (maybe). I'll be in touch before then for advice, suggestions, etc. |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 Jul 13 - 09:11 PM Nice sing! A few regulars missing, a few irregulars back, and, well, sciencegeek and Mike were there. Mike's been there once before, but I don't think sciencegeek has. And Meridian (Colin de la Barre and Olivia Gale) finally were able to get to the session. Colin, of course, has been to The Press Room before, but it was Olivia's first time. That's all you're getting for right now. I'll do my archival duties tomorrow. Thanks, everybody! What a lovely afternoon! (Even though my throat felt as if I'd folded it a couple times last night while holding a cold beverage can in lieu of a fan to try to sleep -- power went out at half past midnight and didn't come on this morning until after I'd brought home coffee and McFill. Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Jeri Date: 20 Jul 13 - 10:10 PM I had a great time, with at least one really stupid moment, but what kind of good time can you have without any really stupid moment? Wonderful to have that many good singers! I heard Meridian--Colin & Olivia--sing the Hissyfit song Sweet Minerva before, and it was, and is, stunning. Olivia has this clear, honest voice, and Colin is a harmony genius. Can't wait to hear them at the festival in September! Another nice thing is that the temperature upon departing seemed sane. |

Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 21 Jul 13 - 10:53 PM A couple of notes on a really nice session: #29 should be "the Girls Around Cape Horn". "Rounding The Horn" is a different, slightly more tragic, and more common version. #61: Ernie was the initiator of "Nelson's Prayer", I joined him out of a FIRM sense of tradition..... I was pleasantly surprised at the number of attendees on a hot July day. BTW, isn't "London Julie" getting really good ?!! Don |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Jul 13 - 09:02 AM Thanks, Don! Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: crism Date: 22 Jul 13 - 04:59 PM Sorry to have missed it… the move from Florida was hellish (and we're only half done), and at the time of the sing, I was still somewhere in northern Virginia. I'll be at one of the Fridays soon. |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Jul 13 - 07:34 PM Chris, we heard of the threat of your appearance from Nick Noble who was at Friday's session. Sorry, too, that you missed it. Really miss having you live in the vicinity and having you at sessions on a more or less regular basis. See you soon. Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: sciencegeek Date: 24 Jul 13 - 05:21 AM hi... back home again sciencegeek aka Chris Setari lol Charlie Noble added Wreaker's Prayer to lyrics database, so look there I sang Fear a Bhata, trying not to mangle the gaelic too badly the other two songs that Mike sang were Rambo Shanty ( his own work) & High Noon in the Tropics (another C Fox Smith poem adapted for singing)... hope you enjoyed them |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: sciencegeek Date: 24 Jul 13 - 07:27 AM oops... just realized spelling is critical in search... Lyr Add: Wreckers Prayer, The |
