Full info on the creation of the song in wikipedia Sally Go Round The Roses, giving the inspiration as Ring Around The Rosie.

I'd only ever heard the Pentangle version on the excellent Basket of Light album. Having listened to the Jaynetts original, the Pentangle arrangement was very closely based on it.

The song, "Sally Go 'Round The Roses" is marked as being written by 'L. Stevens and Z. Sanders'. I had them down as The Jaynettes with an '-e-'. However, Hardy & Laing's 'Encyclopaedia of Rock 1955-1975' has this entry:

"The Jaynetts [sic] were Mary Sue Wells, Ethel Davis, Ada Ray and Yvonne Bushness - from New York's Bronx. They first appeared on Zell Sanders J&S label in 1956. However, it wasn't until 1963 that they came to the fore with the driving, hypnotic 'Sally Go 'Round The Roses', a Top Five record on Sanders' Tuff subsidiary, that came complete with a band-track, 'sing along without . . . ' flip. Sanders' daughter, Johnnie Louise Richardson - who was also half of Johnnie and Joe of 'Over The Mountain' fame - recorded but didn't perform with the group, which, after a minor hit as the Hearts, 'Dear Abby', disbanded in 1968."

So on the basis that Stevens and Sanders appear to have written it, the answer may that it isn't a traditional song. However, we've seen plenty of traditional material copyrighted by all sorts of people over the years.

Great copyright enthusiasts have been De Danann. They have been very vociferous about people stealing their material. However, you may have noticed that De Danann have used songs by writers such as Allan Taylor. Guess who's never paid a penny, and have fought all the way to use other peoples' material without so much as a kiss my arse? Funny old world, isn't it?

The original version was by The Jaynettes.

In the days when Grace Slick was still together with husband Darby Slick, she did a version of it, recorded at the Fillmore, when they performed together in the group, The Great Society.

I remember it from early 60's top 40 radio. It was done by one of the "Girl Groups", but I can't recall their name. It still gets played occasionally on the local "oldies" radio station. You could probably call such a station and find out who did it, maybe even get it played by request.

The late Tim Buckley, father of the late Jeff Buckley, did a beautiful version of this song on the Sefronia album which came out maybe 1973(?), early 70's anyway.

Don't know the song, but Edith Fowke's collection of children's folksongs, rhymes, etc., was titled Sally Go Round the Sun after one of the chants.
