Yes, he means the Wednesday of festival week. Although he didn't make it explicit, it is a festival event.

Dave Hunt: you do mean Weds of Festival week, not this Weds (as I know some people come down early!)Those sort of songs are my speciality!
And VT and Leadfingers: I think the word is that the "Run Ashore" will be done by some of The Exmouth Shantymen, but guess you could ask TD in the Middle Bar what the form is and the need for any pressed men or women!

Was 1997 the year the river rose 11ft and there were announcements at the concerts to inform the person who had parked their car in the ford that there was a slight problem . . .

1997 was exceedingly wet with floods into the craft tent (it was on the Arena site in those days). They put down pallets for people to to walk on and they (the pallets....) floated away. There are pictures of campsite mud in 2009 on the internet but it wasn't as bad as 1997.

The festival missed a repeat of 1997 last year. The floods were in early July. Quite a few videos on youtube and some pictures on other websites.

Very little rain in Sidmouth over the last day - quite a few hours but not heavy - far less than in neighbouring towns. Ground still quite firm. Temperature 20C and very pleasant out of doors.

Which was the year of the mud? The year when you could only reach dance floors in walking boots or wellies? Though I had 4wd I wasn't allowed to leave the campsite till the end of the festival. And coming back from the LNE the poor stewards in the pissing rain still insisting on tickets as if anyone who didn't have to would want to enter the squagmire.

I was in a tent at Kings Down Tail in 1997, but it remained watertight all the way through. This year, as in quite a few of the past I shall be in my caravan on the Festival site.

I'm running a 'songswap' on Comic Songs and Parodies - Wed 5.30-7 @ the Woodlands Hotel...I really wanted to call it 'Head full of Shite' as that's how my friend Baz Parkes once described me! Over the last 50 years I have accumulated hundreds of silly songs, diddles, daft rhymes, nonsense songs, parodies etc and would like to share them. If YOU have any similar material come along and share it - or just come for the fun! These are the sort of things that stick in the collective folk memory, and are as traditional as ballads
Cheers DAVE

Just enough rain last night to settle some of the dust, not enough to really dampen the ground.

Light rain and sunny spells forecast for the next few days.

Quote from Met Office website:

The United Kingdom saw a prolonged period of high temperatures between Saturday 6 July and Thursday 24 July. A maximum temperature of 28 C or more was recorded at one or more location on each of those 19 days. The last time the UK saw such a long period of hot weather was August 1997 which also had a 19 day run of high temperatures.

What happened in Sidmouth Festival week in 1997?

If you missed it last Autumn, you can catch the world's only 2013 (and later performance) of the Short Sharp Shanties - with Jeff Warner, Jackie Oates, Keith Kendrick, Tom & Barbara Brown and Doug Bailey: Manor Pavilion on Wednesday evening.

I daresay I'll see and hear the previous posters in the Anchor - but any early risers who like to sing with instrumental accompaniment are very welcome to come and perform in the 10.30 morning singarounds in the Faulkner Bar of the Royal York and Faulkner (Esplanade) from Sunday morning onwards. Unaccompanied performers also welcome!

Kitty
