There seems to be a ponchant for green bananas here in the UK - can't understand it.

Green = Starch
Yellow = Glucose.

Which if you are not cooking them (eg banana split) means yellow is the one. Personally I liked red bananas - sweetest of all. But they do not have the same shelf life. Hence they don't sell them any more here.

On a minor point if Latrobe & Wilmington dispute the originality of the recipe could we (I am getting my coat as we speak) ........

Thanks for the link, LadyJean. I see that Labtrobe has music in the park every Tuesday in summer. That sounds delightuful!

One day several years ago, I was working at my-part time job, and I realized that I just didn't feel good. I didn't feel 'really' sick, but I didn't feel well either. I was tired and had no appetite, yet I needed food. So I went to Baskin Robbins and had a banana split. I've been fine ever since.

It might not have been so patronizing at one time. I can remember exactly when I first encountered a banana split, having spent my childhood in England without ever seeing one. It was on the ship emigrating to New Zealand in early 1958, in the middle of the Atlantic. It was the first time I'd ever tried any foreign food. Within a few days I had corned beef hash, cold lime cordial and tasted a bit of the gooey raw cocoa pod my father got in Panama.

According to Wikipedia, "the city of Latrobe celebrated the 100th anniversary of the invention of the banana split in 2004."

100 years ago this summer, the banana split was invented in Latrobe Pennsylvania. To commemorate this historic event, the town is having a contest for the best banana split song. Go to www.latrobeartcenter.org, and you can check out the entries. I think the contest may still be open.

Note for our friends across the sea, a banana split is an ice cream dessert featuring a split banana, filled with ice cream and covered in various toppings.
