I no longer use Google very much - I use DuckDuckGo mostly. And I instructed Google, anyway, to stop keeping tabs on my searches for things I want to buy.

But they keep popping up anyway. Blenders, at the moment. Window cleaning stuff from Lakeland.

Perhaps I should inform the companies concerned that I will not buy their goods if they do that.

Drives me up the wall.

Somewhere in Firefox I ticked 'tell sites I don't want to be tracked'. Makes no difference but it doesn't bother me.
Online ads pay for things and I don't have to DO anything. Junk mail through the letterbox bothers me more as I have to put the envelope in the bin and the innards in the recycling.

AdBlock Plus works great for me.

Keep in mind that it's as effective for blocking ads as any tool is for fixing something. You have to do more than just get it--you have to figure out how to use it.

In the case of AdBlock Plus, you have to subscribe to a filter (or open it and tell it what to block).

There is a Firefox add on TrackMeNot which obfuscates users' search data profiles. It works for me.

Ghostery seems to work for me on Firefox.

One of the "buzzwords" in the computer business (more correctly in the advertising business, although that's mostly the same as the computer business now maybe) is what they call "Big Data."

The assumption (pretty well documented as true) is that if they have enough little bits of information about enough (anonymous) people in any large enough group, they can identify any particular person with their "browsing interests" with sufficient accuracty to feed targeted ads - without the need to track them in any way as "known persons." (i.e. including without using cookies)

A rather curious result of this is that when they merge someone else's database with their own, they may suddenly start sending you ads about things you haven't looked at for several years. By checking notes made when I was interested, I've found things I KNOW I haven't looked at for a little over three years popping up persistently at mudcat and elsewhere. I can't say how far back the old sh*t may pop up on you, but it's possible that nothing ever really goes away.

They don't have to know anything about you if they know just a little bit about enough people in a group that you get lumped into. (According to what they say.)

[Rumors are the NSA knows about this, too.]

John

That is weird. I will try out some of those blocking things. But I think I might, just out of sheer okkardness, do some searches for things I don't want.

What gets me is when Amazon send me ads for things I've only recently bought and hope will last for several years: I mean, how many camera batteries can you need.......?

Yes and by doing so they're missing the chance to sell something out of the blue that you've never heard of and might be just what you do in fact need.

PS JHW Cookie now on this laptop too - seems ok
