Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Ebbie Date: 31 Jul 13 - 04:10 PM I grew up with horses and rode them a great deal but I remember a donkey that my dad came home with, one day. Her name was Flossie and she could be ridden although a walk was her preferred gait. Took a long time to get from Point A to Point B. There was little or no spring to her step so the movement was quite vertical rather than rhythmic and not what one could comfortable. Still, I rode her for the novelty of it. I remember one time when I rode her into the back 40 of the about 400 acres we had to roam around in. Took me practically all day to get back. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Little Hawk Date: 31 Jul 13 - 03:45 PM Gold sovereigns are lovely coins. Pity they aren't in regular circulation any longer, but if they were, it would reveal how much the value of the fiat currencies has declined. I sold a few last year when gold was way high, but I kind of hated to part with them. "makes you look a right pillock over here" Like this oik....roight? |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: GUEST,Musket prospecting Date: 30 Jul 13 - 04:27 PM I bought a cowboy type hat in South Africa last year. Seemed a good idea there but makes you look a right pillock over here. Methinks sat on a donkey, I could pull it off. Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Jul 13 - 12:03 PM I think she's right, Musket. Having chickens is a great idea. They are fun, entertaining...a bit noisy...but that's allright...and you get fresh eggs. Having a donkey is also a great idea. Do both, I say. The Greyhound will have a bit more to think about, and that'll be good too, because most domestic dogs suffer a good deal from boredom. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Musket Date: 30 Jul 13 - 10:59 AM You live and learn. I have always thought a donkey was a donkey, and mules & asses were the same thing, the cross breed with a horse. Donkeys were a big thing when I was a child, riding them on Blackpool beach. For some reason, I have always wanted one. We have a bit of land, a few paddocks, (mainly rented out to horsey type people, but a smaller one near the house doing nothing) and there is a donkey sanctuary not far away. The situation is this. I refuse to keep chickens. She refuses to have a donkey. However, during peace talks in Geneva, she conceded I could have my donkey if she got her chickens, I reserved my view for the time being. What do you think? The greyhound ignores horses and won't get near chickens anyway. Be buggered if I know what to do? I said at the outset that buying an old farmhouse is not a precursor to giving Dr Doolittle a run for his money. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Jul 13 - 10:07 AM LOL! The way you determine the common, ordinary ass (arse) from an Ass like Jethro is simple. If it's Jethro, then "Ass" is capitalized, as in "Jethro the Ass". Also...your ass (your arse) is always behind you, while Jethro might be behind you (and if he is, watch out!), but he might also be in front of you, beside you, or over in the next yard. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jul 13 - 11:39 PM You're right, gnu. Jethro is an Ass, and proud of it! Dachshunds do expect humans to sacrifice a "suitable" amount of their time, energy, and financial resources so that the Dachshund will experience the requisite amount of satisfaction. That means copious amounts of food, water, attention, exercise, admiration (if not downright worship), and food. Specially food! |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Rapparee Date: 29 Jul 13 - 10:35 PM Doesn't Dachshundism require human sacrifice? |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jul 13 - 05:23 PM I am fairly well convinced that most commercial dog and cat food does make pets ill...over a long enough period of time. In short, it's crap. A dog shouldn't have to eat such awful stuff! I will, however, agree that the very best of commercially produced dog and cat foods is probably okay...but this would require some investigation, consulting a good Vet as to which brand is worthwhile, etc. If humans are eating fresh meat and veggies and if they are good for us, then they're also good for dogs and cats, in my opinion, and probably considerable better for them than the average commercial pet food is. Anyone who wants to fight with me about this opinion of mine should be directed to my backyard, where my friend Jethro is busy trimming the foliage. Jethro is a donkey (also sometimes termed an ass)...and he likes to argue with people...whereas I'm not particularly interested in doing so. I do like to talk about stuff...but I really don't come here to argue with people, just to talk in a friendly fashion. So take any major bitching you have about whatever I say to Jethro, my Ass, okay? And as a friendly overture when meeting Jethro...give him a nice big kiss. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Dachsundism becoming and region? From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Jul 13 - 06:59 PM No, no, no! They come from what was once called "Germania"...a vast, forested region east of the Rhine, a region that Rome never succeeded in conquering. Germania was peopled by a number of fierce tribes who were collectively known as Germanii (Germans). In time the descendants of these German warriors bred the Dachshund (badger hound) for the purpose of pursuing a badger down into its burrow, siezing it with powerful jaws, and dragging it out to be clubbed to death by the hunter. This took amazing guts and determination on the dog's part and is seen in the Dachshund's tenacious, stubborn, and feisty nature. Modern day Dachshunds, however, are mostly bred to be pets rather than hunting dogs. They are playful, amusing, willful, and difficult to train, but make excellent companions. They are fast and agile when young, good runners and jumpers, but tend to get overweight and sedentary in old age unless given lots of daily exercise. They naturally pursue rodents and other small animals. They have a loud bark, due to possessing a deep chest. They enjoy singing, and their rapturous "singing" with the nose pointed skyward is easily prompted by hearing a harmonica, various other musical instruments, a passing siren on an emergency vehicle, or any other "howling" sound. They will often sing along with humans, but have some trouble staying "on key". |

I'm not saying they're all like that...but Suzie was. She would bark at the cows next door for hours on end until they would finally become disgusted and move away to some other part of the field where she couldn't see them. One time they found Suzie on their side of the fence, and they did a cow charge like I've never seen before...the ground thundered! They chased her through about 3 huge fields till she got out underneath a barbed wire fence and escaped, yelping all the way. |

In fact, selfishness is considered a great virtue among Dachshunds! Bullying is just fine among Dachshunds as long as you can get away with it. Ignoring or denouncing contrary opinions goes without saying. And any Dachshund worth his salt definitely knows that HE is the solution to all problems! Despite this, they are still lovable. ;-) |
