An English life wasted in devotion to AMERICAN rock and blues, instead of his own good English folk and/or classical music. More here - http://davidfranks.blogspot.co.uk/p/messages.html

It's lovely to see Mick mingling in such a relaxed and genial way with the upper classes...just the kind of gracious scenes Penelope Rutledge is often found in, and the kind Chongo envisions himself moving through effortlessly after he gets elected.

Curious that there don't seem to be any Mudcatters at the party...Probably hiding in the bushes under their pseudonyms...LOL :0)

O.K. O.K. settle down, I'm sure Mick would have invited you had he known that you were free that day. Excluding, of course, those among you who have been discussing his weenie. NO CHAMPAGNE FOR YOU!

I saw them during the Voodoo Lounge tour.   There were lots of VW posters etc as Volkswagen were part of the sponsorship. The next day, he gave an interview to the local radio station. They ribbed him about corporate sponsorship, citing the VW stuff. Selling out etc.

Dunno. Said Mick. My chauffer drives a Mercedes. ..

Here pete. Your family story. Is that where he got the inspiration for Sympathy for the Devil?

So? Godzilla's pecker is tiny, and look at what he's done! This can easily be confirmed by viewing any of the movies he's starred in. His pecker is so infinitesimally small that it's virtually undetectable, yet this has not prevented him from rising to the top of his particular vocation and becoming world famous. It is said that 88% of Japanese women have sexual fantasies about Godzilla at least once or twice a week. Size doesn't matter!!!!!!!! ;-)

Plenty of people got into making music by emulating their musical heroes - it's a fine tradition. Even something like punk with its alledged year zero approach has its antecedents in 60s garage rock, The Stooges, The Velvet Underground and so on. Personally the Stones don't really do it for me these days - I like a lot of their older stuff (in fact there's a strong argument that they should have retired after Exile On Main Street!), but I can't see why anyone would want to watch them being their own tribute band in a massive aircraft hangar at god knows how much per ticket. Especially when there are so many great bands out there playing intimate venues with affordable ticket prices...

IMO, music and the entertainment field is better off because of his contributions - and those of his band mates.

Indeed. Jeff Beck tells the story of an early Yardbirds tour to the USA and the band could not believe that Americans were taking them seriously! A lot of the young whites were hearing the imported version from white Brits before they actually heard their own American blues masters! BB King, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker all gave the Brits credit for making their music popular again. It may have been unjust, but at that time the originals had slipped below the radar. Had it not been for the British blues boom, many of us would never have heard of Robert Johnson, BB, Muddy Waters, MJH and a host of other greats.

Practically all the English rock musicians in the early 60s fell in love with the old Blues music that came from the Black musicians in the USA. Why pick on Jagger for it?

Er no. He got taken to the cleaners financially at that time of his life Shimrod! The Stones loved blues music and were as surprised as anyone when their music began to generate huge amounts of money. No one should resent them for wanting a share of it.

When all is said and done, the Stones will probably be remembered for writing some of greatest rock 'n' roll songs in the history of popular music: "Jumpin' Jack Flash"; "Brown Sugar"; "Honky Tonk Women"; "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)" etc

Part of their appeal is the ability, after half a century, to still sound like they just picked up their instruments a year or two ago. The KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle put into musical practice, and why budding rock musicians throughout the years hold the Stones in such high esteem. Learning Keef's riffs are an excellent primer to rock 'n' roll guitar.

Instead of highlighting their musical shortcomings, the Stones' minimal arrangements over the years have elevated this style to an art form, much the way John Fahey's style engendered the descriptive invention of "American Primitive" fingerstyle guitar playing.

The 60s was a time of absolutely incredible idealism and creativity...which ran head on into cynical, corrupt governments and vested financial interests who had no intention of yielding the power of the tiny elites who rule over the rest of humanity.

Those wealthy elites are still ruling over the rest of humanity, and that means over all of us, and the young people in the succeeding generations. The challenges remain the same. I hope to live to again see a young generation that dares to hope as we did and that takes up the struggle to bring about genuine freedom and equality for all people.

The Rolling Stones? Well, they were a very good band of their type, but not social idealists. Rather, they were just good at what they did. The musicians of that era I really admire are people like Joan Baez, Jackson Browne, and Buffy Sainte-Marie who didn't just talk the "cool" talk of the moment...they got out there and worked hard to bring about a more just society.

My meaning was that all generations probably tend to be a bit arrogant, at all stages of their life.

We think we got it right in ways our predecessors and successors did not.

Occasionally perhaps we are correct in thinking that. That's how I tend to feel about the sixties, but then I would.

As for Jagger, he made some good songs, and it's fun to see a contemporary with all that energy. But he always was a dillitante when it came to serious stuff, and he never actually made any pretence to the contrary. Basically a Tory through and through.

Hasn't really changed. We're still an arrogant generation.. It's just that these days our scorn is more directed towards people who are still wet behind the ears. Those infants under sixty, say...

Aren't all generations like that really?

Ah well...that's exactly how a lot of the people in our generation felt, isn't it? They figured that anyone over 30 was irrelevant...a hilariously dippy notion to have about humanity, but it was normal at the time to be both arrogant and at the same time defensive (in the manner of noble martyrdom) about one's own youthfullness.

I could blush to think of just how arrogant we were at the time....but (shrug) I can forgive it too. It was understandable, given the various forces that were in play.

Maybe the Who should re-record My Generation, just changing one line to "I hope I die before I act old"... That way it still fits the generation in question pretty well. Fits the Stones anyway.

For what it's worth, I have always enjoyed The Stones and admired Mick Jagger's professionalism as an entertainer. The Stones were robbed blind in the sixties, which was the time most people would say was when most of their greatest songs were recorded. I believe they were absolutely right to get their business affairs organised and to demand a proper share of the income they were generating - most of which had hitherto gone into other pockets. Good luck to them - and if you don't like 'em, why waste your time moaning about them when you could be listening to music you like?

I met Mick, at an 'after concert party' for the 'Doors', in 1968, under the Hollywood Bowl, in the basement. Actually, offstage, he is rather subdued, and polite..rather small and thin, almost sickly in appearance, but energy coming off him.
During the mid to late 70's, he used to do dialysis, to clean his blood from the drugs he was taking.
But one thing...he made it to 70!

The $305,000,000 isn't what he's worth...it's what he has. Not saying anything bad about the man in saying that, just pointing out the illogical use of language. It's damn silly to say a person is "worth" some given amount of money, in my opinion.

Even the most jaded would have to agree that Mick is a force of nature. He ran around "the tongue pit" 3 times during the show and ran circles around some of his guests.

Surprised to find that he's only worth $305,000,000! I thought he would surely be a Billionaire.

The guy in front of me at the T-shirt booth spent $650...and then had to pay for tickets...$85.00 minimum up to $635 at the Bell Center in Montreal. Scalpers were trying to unload a pair of tickets for $1000. Your average yearly budget for most Folk clubs....:0)

Happy Birthday Mick! The STONES.... STILL, for many, "England's Newest Hit Makers" in a lot of ways...LOL
