'catter, Dave Ruch, when not making music with Jeff Davis, is a member of a Buffalo, NY based band that is putting on some free concerts ( and some not so free) in the western New York area. Anyone in the area is welcome - and strongly advised- to give thema listen. Their schedule is on their website:

Support our local musicians whenever & wherever we can!

LOL... lots of canals for everyone... we have the Erie/Barge Canal aka Clinton's Ditch ( different Clinton).

I hit enter too quick earlier, forgetting to mention that you too can hear them on CD or youtube...

I was fascinated to hear that there is a Canal Street String Band - until I discovered it is not a band based in Canal Street, Manchester, UK. Anyone visiting the north west of the UK should find time to visit Canal Street. No string band but a great night out!

North west of UK? Don't you mean England.

Thanks sciencegeek for the "plug." The band is named after the former Canal Street in Buffalo NY USA, a commercial strip on the waterfront where "vice unbridled ran its course" in the nineteenth century (quote from an 1855 newspaper). Buffalo being the place where the Erie Canal met with the Great Lakes, its harbor was bustling with commerce (both maritime and otherwise) all through the nineteenth century. The sailors (many of whom had circled the globe) referred to it as "the wickedest street in the world." Couldn't think of a better place to name a band after.

glad to do it, Dave. After all, Mike & I only need two seats, so there's plenty of room for others.

Brighton is just a little north of my office, so we'll have a nice supper out and them come on over for a good time.
