I've got a copy of the Document Records CD of Frank Hutchison's 78s. There is some brilliant stuff on there and I'd like hear more. So can anyone recommend any other artists - vintage or contemporary - who play that Piedmont blues style? I'm aware of Charlie Parr and have quite a few of his albums - but who else is out there? Who were Frank Hutchison's contemporaries? Can any of you blues fans help an English folkie who is outside of his comfort zone? Thanks in advance...

All I know about Hutchison is that he was one of the first white blues players. He had a brief career and died under tragic circumstances. Wish I knew more because he had several cuts on an anthology that I really loved. Sorry.

Are you looking for people who play in the style of West Virginian Frank Hutchison i.e slide guitar? or are you looking for Piedmont Blues men such as Blind Boy Fuller? Two different styles.
If you are looking for slide guitar players from the white tradition you could try The Dixon Brothers, North Carolina mill workers one of whom played slide or Darby & Tarleton. Jimmie Tarleton was "rediscovered" in later years and made a solo album accompanying himself on slide guitar

Hi Hoot, this sounds interesting. Such is my ignorance that I don't actually know what Piedmont blues is - I've just heard Frank H's music described as such, perhaps erroneously? The Dixon Brothers and Jimmy Tarlton sound promising. Will explore further...

Have looked up Piedmont blues on Wikipwdia and discovered I do know what it is. Not only that but reading about it has reminded me to dig out "Chocolate to the Bone" by Barbecue Bob which I'm now listening to. Lovely. So in answer to the question, I think what I was looking for in the post above was more slide guitarists who play like Mr H!
