For those in/near Sheffield:

James Fagan is putting on some great singers from Sydney called The Roaring Forties, at Shakespeares (http://www.shakespeares-sheffield.co.uk/) on Wed August 28th.

Quoth James: "You might already know the fine singing of Margaret Walters in this group. The harmonies are big and bold, and I love their mixture of shanties and industrial songs. Their last album should be of interest to Sheffield audiences and singers, as it focuses on the steel industry of NSW, Australia.

Here's the gig information - please have a look, and pass it on to anyone you might think would enjoy the gig."

Shakespeares Freehouse presents:

August 28th: 8pm (Doors 7.30pm)

Australian harmony singers "THE ROARING FORTIES"

Specialising in songs of the sea and songs about the Steel Industry in N.S.W, Australia.

"'Highly characterful' singers from Australia with a unique and robust repertoire of maritime and industrial songs."

This is a unique chance to see these great Aussie singers on a rare visit to the UK, in a brilliant venue famous for great real ale and fine music.

Tickets: £8 (£7 students)

To book a ticket email James Fagan on jamesfaganis@hotmail.com

Here is their website: www.roaringfortiesfolk.com

The Roaring Forties (Sydney, Australia) is a group of strong individual singers who have been singing together for over 25 years. Mostly unaccompanied, and known for their singing of sea shanties and other maritime songs, they make a powerful impact with their robust songs telling of real people, their lives and work. They complement their traditional repertoire with original compositions concerning Australia's social and industrial history. Touring members include Robin Connaughton, Tom Hanson, Chris Maltby and Margaret Walters.

Extracts from reviews of their most recent album, We Made the Steel:

The songs and sentiments on this fine CD give a fresh Antipodean slant to themes which will resonate across all the ex-industrial heartlands on this side of the world. A treat for listeners, as well as for performers looking for worthy and sing-able material. -- Jez Lowe

Not only are the singing and playing on this disc uniformly excellent and highly characterful, but the actual presentation of this release is also exemplary…. A benchmark release; and highly entertaining and inspiring to boot. -- Folk Roundabout #167

It is tonight

I would have been there, and it is with great regret that I have a commitment that I cannot change

I do know that the grapevine has been at work and the Shakespeare is a fine venue so great night tonight!

I spoke to Alan Bell of Fylde recently (at Saltburn ff) also and there will no doubt be great reception in store

I can report it was a lovely evening - with brilliant singing, and wonderful joining-in!

Thanks to Roaring 40s - and to James for organising it!

I wouldn't have expected anything less from the 40's.

Now will you let them come back to Australia? We miss them. We've had at least 2 sessions without their voices & not forgetting a couple of concerts without their harmonies in the audience.
