Jean Ritchie calls it The Swapping Song (click), and I think that's the most common name of the song in the U.S.

It's a song generically known as The Foolish Boy, an English song in which a silly young lad starts off with something like a horse and swaps this for something less valuable and then again and then again till he ends up with nothing. There will be plenty of versions in the DT. Just type that title into the box at the top. There are plenty of American versions which is what yours probably is.

I'm being driven crazy by a song fragment--the chorus goes "to my ding dong daddle, to my ring rong raddle, to my sing song saddle, to my long way home." The consonants could be all different (fing fong faddle, etc.) What I really want is the verses.

A friend recommended this website, guaranteeing that a lot of people would respond; I'm just hoping I'll be able to recognize and find the respnses!
