Not long ago, this guy showed up at one of our antique car meets. He came in a modern car so I invited him to ride with us. We fell to talking and he told me his name was Rick Parker, a professional cartoonist. He said he worked for the people who did the Spiderman comics. He did not draw Spiderman, but he did the background characters, the evil ones. We discussed Maine humor and folk music, and he asked for one of my CDs, and thought he would like to swap one of his drawings for it. I had to wonder if he was full of it, but I gave him a CD, and today he gave me a color drawing of Gid Tanner of the old time band, Gid Tanner and the Georgia skillet lickers. It looks just like Gid Tanner, not a caricature.

He said he likes my CD so much he wants to do a drawing of me. My modesty kicked in and I started to withdraw, but then I thought, HELL YES!
He said I sound like a combination of Johnnie Cash and Pete Seeger!

Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

This guy told us that, when he started work for Marvel Comics he knew nothing about them or Spiderman. Given his surname it wasn't long before one of his colleagues asked him if he was related to Peter Parker. The blank look on his face showed his 'ignorance' and he said this guy gave him a look that said "You have no right to be working here!".

You mean you ran into THE Rick Parker, the colourist of Spider-Man? (Well, not just colourist, I guess, but that's how he came in, erm, "several" years ago.) Wow. It really is a small world.

Nah, it was lettering. He came in as letterer. And the contributors would have these little comments next to their name about themselves or how they did their job, and it made you wonder how he'd felt lettering the comment about himself. Separate mentions about colouring came later, I think.
Hm, it would appear I can't recall all the details of all the comics I've ever read. Must be my age.
