Hiya,

Happy (VERY) :

Don Van Vliet aka Capt Beef♥

Discovered him via Stackwaddy, the name Don Van Vliet kept cropping up on the back of their cds. Since I thought Stack Waddy were/are so good he must be/have been, too. He makes me cry w/ laughter. I thought he was like John Otway ie his silly voice was part of an act he was doing, but unlike Otway I'd actually want to listen to him w/o seeing him live – not that I can now! From what I've read he seems a bit like me. I'm so glad I discovered him, sad I didn't do so earlier!

True story; been known to make up own songs, usually when stressed. I had his music on & someone said "Claire, is that you?"

Unhappy:

Richard Marx. 'Hazard' = brilliant. Rest of songs nothing like that; boring, boring, boring. 1 good song on each cd if that. Luckily copied his cds off my uncle (who was also disappointed by them).

What about you??

That's the great benefit of festivals.

You get a brief glimpse of many performers and can decide which ones you would like to hear more of.

When it comes to music - I don't think its really up to you to be disappointed. I bet you're not half as disappointed as the bloke was who found he only had one decent song inside him. He chucked his whole life at the project of being a songwriter.

Anyway one decent song - makes him one up on the rest of humanity- most of them don't leave us anything.

Based on this story, I don't think anyone here needs to be sorry for Richard Marx - I think he can take care of himself.

After 49 years of avoiding Leonard Cohen, I'm thrilled to have "discovered" him and his wonderful music on PBS a few years ago. He has enriched my life.

How Come? Aside from a couple of his better known songs I was given to understand that his music was depressing. When I saw him on a PBS special, I was immediately attracted to the arrangements. As time went on, and I bought his recent videos and records I found his lyrics (poetry, really) touching, mystical, and, yes, sometimes humorous. If you're not familiar with his work, especially his more recent live videos, check them out. This is the longest post I've ever done, because obviously, I can't type worth a damn.

Yeah, Leonard Cohen has been mis-categorised as "depressing" or "songs to commit suicide to" for decades. But as you say, when you listen to a good cross-section of his repertoire he can be dark, witty and sometimes both at once. First saw him live in Oslo in the early 80s. He did the first half of his set solo with just a guitar and then brought on a full rock band for the second half of the show, which was fast-paced, rocky and extremely funny.

We've got used to him appearing with a full band now but back then I wasn't expecting it (nor were many others) but I loved it.

"Untitled Musical Project" have been among recent "discoveries" that I wished had never happened. Heard the tail end of one of their songs and thought they might be interesting. Wrong. I hoped they'd split up for good after a brief flurry on the UK indie-punk scene in 2007 but now hear that, sadly, they've just re-formed :-(

Too many "happy" discoveries to even think about listing!

Madeleine Peyroux. Bought 'Dreamland' at the library op-shop, bought the rest at full price.

I must also sample more of Sarah Brightman. 'Diva' is a remarkable CD.

Neither Folkie, of course.

Happy for: Emmylou, Nanci, Dan Fogelberg, Tish Hinojosa,         James Keelaghan, Celtic music - and, oh my God, probably a ton of others that I won't bore anyone with. Cheers.

Without a doubt discovering Eva Cassidy. A beautiful voice with soul and impeccable control ... a trio rarely found together. Such a tragedy she never lived to get her just rewards.
