Steve,

We had a discussion on this once before. I think the first two verses are from Gus Cannon and the others were added later.

Nice version from Paul Jones and the Blues Band on their acoustic "Wireless" album.

I don't think STEALIN', STEALIN' was by Gus Cannon - it was the Memphis Jug Band. The only two verses they used were: Put your arms around me like a circle round the sun I want you to love me honey like my easy rider done

The woman I'm in love with just my height and size She's a married woman come to see me some time Cheers Ray

For those interested in the Memphis Jug Band, I mention that the missing volume 2 of their complete recorded works is available on the Frog label as FROG DGF16 [David French 167 Shernhall Street Walthamstow London E17 9HX]. Volumes 1 and 3 appeared on the JSP, but that label abandoned its reissue project. 'Stealin' stealin'' is on volume 2. Frog intends to reissue Vols 1 and 2 in due course, but they should still be available through JSP outlets at the moment. A magnificent series with wonderful sound. The restoration is done by the best sound restoration engineer of all - John R.T. Davies. No one does it better.

A quick search of google.com reveals...

STEALING'
evidently by Gus Cannon
but I thought it was a 30's jug band song
I learned it in 1970 - from Jeffrey Burr - of Racine WVa
then recently the mumbly peg champion of Berea (KY) College
My arrangement was also worked over by Kenny Sobel
Bb --- capo @ 1

Put your (A/Bb)arms around me - [Baby/Darling']
Like a (A7/Bb7)circle 'round the sun
I (D/Eb)want you - to love me
like my easy rider (Dm/Ebm)done(Dm7/Ebm7--Dm/Ebm)

You don't be(A/Bb)lieve (E7/F7)I (A/Bb)love you
But look what a (A/Bb)fool - (E7/F7)I've (A/Bb)been
You don't be(A/Bb)lieve (E7/F7)I'm (A/Bb)sinking'
But look what a (A/Bb)hole - (E7/F7)I'm (A/Bb)in

Stealing' - (A7/Bb7)Stealing' - pretty Baby
Don't you tell on me(Dm/Ebm--Dm7/Ebm7--Dm/Ebm)
'Cause I'm (A/Bb)stealing' back - to my
(E7/F7)same old - used to (A/Bb)be (A7/Bb7--D/Eb--Dm7/Ebm7--A/Bb--E7/F7)

You (A/Bb)said you love me
But you (A7/Bb7)know it ain't true
(D/Eb)Ev'ry time I [call you]
[I can't seem to get (Dm/Ebm)thru](Dm7/Ebm7--Dm/Ebm)

You don't be(A/Bb)lieve (E7/F7)I (A/Bb)love you
But look what a (A/Bb)fool - (E7/F7)I've (A/Bb)been
You don't be(A/Bb)lieve (E7/F7)I'm (A/Bb)sinking'
But look what a (A/Bb)hole - (E7/F7)I'm (A/Bb)in

Stealing' - (A7/Bb7)Stealing' - pretty Baby
Don't you tell on me(Dm/Ebm--Dm7/Ebm7--Dm/Ebm)
'Cause I'm (A/Bb)stealing' back - to my
(E7/F7)same old - used to (A/Bb)be (A7/Bb7--D/Eb--Dm7/Ebm7--A/Bb--E7/F7)

(Stealing' -) A7/Bb7(Stealing' - pretty Baby Don't you tell on me)Dm/Ebm--Dm7/Ebm7--Dm/Ebm

I love you in -----
(Dm/Ebm)green(Dm7/Ebm7--Dm/Ebm)

You don't be(A/Bb)lieve (E7/F7)I (A/Bb)love you

Additional verses I used to hear from a hot little jug band back in Houston in the '60s:

I know a pretty gal,
Just about my height and size.
She's a married woman,
Comes to see me sometimes.

and

My life's a vicious circle,
Day after day;
I just smoke cigarettes
And clean a dirty ashtray.

Don't know where that last one came from...a toss-in of oblique sophomoric philosophy or sumpin'...

But, thanks, Trapper, for the smile -- haven't thought of that in ages. That group used to make Sand Mountain rock!

Sarah

Thanks Trapper...I've always liked Stealin...such a slidy, formless, laidback song I've never had the nerve to try to play it...unitl now.

I believe if you can credit the song to any one it would be Wil Shades and the Memphis Jug Band, Not Gus Cannon, although If I am wrong I would love to hear a version done by Cannon's Jug Stompers.
Garcia and Grisman do a great version of it on the fantastic SHADY GROVE collection.

And Arlo Guthrie did it on "Runnin' Down the Road" in 1970. I can't drag the whole thing out of my fading memory, but his version of Amos's verse is:

Well I got me a woman
'Bout my size and height
She's a married woman
So you know she treats me right

The folk music program on WKSU from Kent, Ohio (which I hear online at wksu.org) recently played "Oh, In the Morning" from that album...I'd forgotten just how beautiful that song was. Anybody know anything more about it? (I know it's thread creep, but I'm too lazy to start another thread right now.)

Aloha,
Mark

Another verse:    penned by Cindy Young:

The Woman I'm a lovin' , She sure can make me wail,
If her husband ever catch me, gonna land myself in jail,

etc.
