Sorry to hear this about anyone, but Linda particularly. I'm one of those who still gush over her and follow her eagerly to almost any of her genres. From the beginning her voice gripped me with its precision and its concentrated passion, like an emotional laser. As one of her generation, its scary to think that Parkinsons is out there sniping at those we love. I hope she finds a different way to hit those high notes.

This news is so hard to accept. She is my senior by a few years. When she hit it big with Blue Bayou, I had just embarked on my career. My love and best wishes go out to her.

Here's a link to a write-up. http://blog.aarp.org/2013/08/23/linda-ronstadt-discloses-her-battle-with-parkinsons-disease/?sf16438510=1

My local YMCA has a yoga class for people with balance disorders. I don't know why balance is such a problem for me, but some of the other people in the class have Parkinson's. I marvel at their courage.

There are some interesting and innovative treatments for Parkinson's, I hope she is able to benefit from some of those.

I danced through the 1980s to many of her wonderful songs. This is sad news indeed!

My all-time favourite singer.
I was always hoping she'd do a twilight tour of the UK.
Alas this will not be.
So sad, to hear this news.

Linda, don't give up. Medical treaatments for Parkinsons are sketchy, but evolving. In any case, you are secure in knowing that you have inspired innumerable musicians to keep plugging away, (myself included) with your voice, tone and mannner. You are without equal, IMO. Thanks, BlueJay

Her Lush Life project with Nelson Riddle, and her Canciones de mi Padre project are some of the finest efforts in American recorded music. And hey, I liked her pop stuff, too.

And I almost forgot the wonderful work she did on The Pirates of Penzance. This is one helluva talented woman.

I hope she gets her condition under control so she can continue to do the wonderful work she's done in the past.

Linda is a fine lady. I had the honor of teaching her the guitar during the time she had a ski accident. At the time, she was going with Jerry Brown. She is a fine singer, versatile and musical. I am deeply sorry to hear about her bout with Parkinson's but she is a strong person and I think she'll do well, ultimately. We all wish her health and the best.

I was a fan from the first time I heard her in the Stone Pony days and I will be a fan forever.   A beautiful lead singer who preferred to sing harmony and duets (or famously trios). She blended well with similar voices ... With EmmyLou or very different voices ... with Hoyt

Parkinson's is a terrible curse. If you are the strong [Muhammad Ali], or the beautiful [Linda Ronstadt; my adored first wife Valerie], it is lying there always, an ever-present danger.

Let us hope they will soon now find a treatment for it...

Gosh, this is hard to take...so talented, so pretty, so young (at least to me).

I wish her well. I see Michael J. Fox is in periods where he is able to work, and is brave enough to do so when he can.

An acquaintance of mine, mid-seventies has had the disease for many years. He is always seeking new treatments, some give him a life of relative comfort and physical ability for several months, but they don't last, and he has a relapse. He then goes on to a newer, temporary treatment. He keeps going, and believes that a protocol will finally be the one that returns his life to normal, whatever that is. He is quite a fighter.

I hope that Linda finds relief from this health robber...soon.

Wow! So sad to hear this bad, bad news about Linda Ronstadt.
I remember seeing her many years ago at a small club called
The Palamino in North Hollywood, California in the early years of her career. The club booked mostly country music but they would book other singers there sometimes who were doing pop or folk music as well. Club closed down years and years ago. Rick Nelson played there too.
I was a young teenager and I thought she was incredible!
I think you had to be 18 or maybe even 21 to get in there (can't remember for sure the age requirement) but my older friend knew someone who worked there and got me in although I was about 14 or 15.
From that night onwards I was a big fan - and we were the same height.
(5'2")

From what I have heard on the TV news earlier tonight, here in Los
Angeles she was diagnosed about 8 months ago but has had various symptoms for maybe 8 years or so with balance and having to use a wheelchair or cane sometimes.
It really saddens me greatly to hear this news.

She says she cannot sing now. I remember reading about this folk singer named Richard Meyer earlier this year, (May 2013,) passed away from Parkinson's at about age 58 years old. He wasn't famous but did have several albums out over the years and was involved with the Fast Folk Music albums out of NY in the 80's. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's in about 2005 or 2006 but just got worse and worse and could no longer sing or play guitar.

I guess people have symptoms of Parkinson's in various degrees - some worse then others and treatment can differ as far as results for each individual.
I just hope that she will have the right doctors and treatment that will help her feel better.

Really sorry to hear this.

She was definitely one of the best things about the 70's. Loved her voice right from the start. Still do. She made so many songs her own.

I think I've read that "You're No Good" was originally done by the Everly Brothers and that "Blue Bayou" was originally by Roy Orbison.    They will both always be hers.

Her rocking, aggressive version of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" was--and is-- so much fun to sing along with.   And so many others.

And, as has been mentioned, her venturing into 40's standards etc, (Lush Life, etc,) and into Hispanic music ("de mi Padre") may have led some of us earlier in those directions than we might have done otherwise.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone. We human beings are strange mammals. We invest so much effort and resources in fighting each other. It is high time we invested a lot more in fighting our common enemies - like Parkinson's disease, for instance.

Great article, Chanteylass.

Yes, there was definitely something to be said for 70's radio in the US ( it wasn't all disco, thank God)--but Linda was the brightest star.    Nothing--until now-- could stop that voice, which had so many wonderful and evocative moods.

And she was even a larger-than-life personality, with her connections to people like the Eagles--and even Jerry Brown.

I made a tape--maybe more than one--of my favorites of hers.   And wore it out.

Also roamed the dial looking for her music--and cranked it up every time one came on.

I'll admit I was wrong about "You're No Good".   Turns out it was "When Will I Be Loved?" which was an Everly Brothers song--after all, Phil wrote it.

Another very worthwhile article.    Sounds like her book is well worth getting when it comes out.

For a "folk" angle (with our liberal definition), I think her version of "Hobo's Meditation" on the first Trio album is just wonderful--at the risk of heresy, I far prefer it to the Jimmie Rodgers original.    It's remotely possible, of course, that I am not an unbiased observer.

Yes, a well-done interview, Desert Dancer. I hope Linda will add more to later editions of her book.

I previously to a yoga class I take that includes some people with Parkinson's. A man who I think has Parkinson's has recently begun coming to another different exercise class. When the teacher has us do an abdominal exercise, she asks who could walk through the door that would make us sit up straight and pull in our tummies. (Okay, she can get kind of silly.) If nobody in the class says a name, she usually suggests one of several actors she likes. Then she asks if the men in the class have any suggestions. A few days ago this man said, "Linda Ronstadt." The teacher said, "Oh, she has such a lovely voice." The man said, "She can't sing anymore." The teacher asked, "What? Why not?" The man answered, "She has Parkinson's. She can talk, but she can't sing."
