Subject: RE: Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2013 From: Mr Happy Date: 30 Aug 13 - 12:08 PM The Tuneworks sessions were great & I learned a lot as it's the 1st time I've attended all the workshops & I thoroughly enjoyed them. The sloe [sp!!] sessions were really helpful as I use a variety of instruments: guitar, harmonicas, melodeon & whistles. The final normal speed sesh was excellent though hard work but great - it was like playing with an enormous folk orchestra! Many thanks to all the facilitators. |

Subject: RE: Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2013 From: Mr Happy Date: 29 Aug 13 - 07:27 AM For me, it was one of the best Shrewsbury FFs I've been to since it started. Nic Jones was superb with his son's accompaniment using his father's guitar style, & their other accompanist Belinda O'Hooley on piano and accordion who sounded very much like Jo Brand & delivered similar dry comic lines [but without any crudity!] I'd gone along early so as to get a seat as I'd anticipated that the concert would be bursting at the seams & I was most surprised that this wasn't the case & there were many empty spaces. However, I got see the preceding act which was Lady Maisery & they were excellent both in their unusual harmonies & in their musicianship. |

Subject: RE: Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2013 From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Aug 13 - 07:11 PM Festivals can have who they like but " For me it was the Americana, that made it one of the best yet. Tim O'Brien, California Chocolate Drops, Barnstar all played stunning sets. This festival would not need to be so big if it concentrated on so called Folk Music". So called? I say "so called" because it is mostly self written tripe." What 'self written tripe' was that then? |
Subject: RE: Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2013 From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 27 Aug 13 - 05:06 PM I enjoyed the Be Good Tanyas music but agree they had zero charisma or stagecraft |
Subject: RE: Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2013 From: GUEST,achmelvich Date: 27 Aug 13 - 03:02 PM i agree - barnstar in particular played 2 great sets. a technically brilliant bunch of musicians but also really good with the audience. on the other hand -what is the matter with the be good tanyas? three great cds but live they are sullen, disconnected and with little communication on stage. very disappointing. it did get better when they were joined on stage by zac bassplayer from barnstar who could teach them a lot about performing. it felt like they were being kicked from behind and were almost surprised into showing the ability they have. |

Subject: RE: Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2013 From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Aug 13 - 08:09 AM Returned last night - loads of good stuff but too much Americana and not enough folk music from other countries and no weird Still a great event |
