Apologies if somebody has posted a notice about this already, but I've been up at Whitby all week and could well have missed it.

Anyway, last night (Sun 25th), BBC4 tv showed an absolutely stunning programme called Flamenco: Gypsy Soul. Fabulous music, sympathetic and intelligent presentation and, as a welcome bonus, terrific photography and editing.

It's available on Iplayer until Sun September 1st at Flamenco: Gypsy Soul

Here's the programme blurb.
Duration: 1 hour

Writer Elizabeth Kinder embarks on a journey through Andalusia from Malaga to Cadiz to find the soul of flamenco, the beguiling mix of guitar, song and dance strongly associated with southern Spain's gypsies. Featuring performances from gypsy blacksmiths to goat herders, the documentary reveals a glimpse of a timeless way of life as it has been preserved down the centuries. The history of this mysterious music and its relationship to Spain is explored in chocolate box locations including Moron de la Frontera, Granada, Seville and Jerez and the programme also features rare archive of notable artists such as Camaron de la Isla and Diego Del Gastor.  Show less

Yes, I saw this as well, Fred. I know next to nothing about flamenco but found it very interesting and informative. Could have done with just a few more titles, if possible, when they were singing - just to give us some idea of the feelings being expressed - but a great programme nevertheless.

For a few years - early 80's - I had a show called Guitar Horizons. This included Marcos a flamenco guitarist based in Oxford. Through Marcos I was seduced by the world of Flamenco and spent hours listening to many of the great musicians this musical idiom holds so dear. I saw this TV Doc and must say how well it represented this great folklore that is Flamenco. Showed it to be far more than the customary clicking heels and castanets...though how I wish the Welsh folk dancers that I grew up with had a bit of the sensuality of those exciting flamenco folk dancers. Folk dance supposed to be boring ? Take a look at this prog.
At last a great folk music well represented in a TV doc.
