Subject: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: Cool Beans Date: 27 Aug 13 - 10:54 AM As a proud contributor to Mudcat's "This Is Us" CD anthology, I note that teen heartthrobs One Direction is using that very title for its upcoming movie. Wonder if anyone will mistake them for us. http://www.1dthisisus-movie.com/site/ |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Aug 13 - 11:08 AM Shouldn't it be "These Are We"? |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 27 Aug 13 - 11:27 AM I believe it should be "'Tis we Ourselves." |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: MartinRyan Date: 27 Aug 13 - 11:40 AM On the other hand, there's at least one song written in the (Irish) traditional idiom which namechecks Mudcat! Regards |

Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: MartinRyan Date: 27 Aug 13 - 03:12 PM McG of H I was having a quiet break outside a pub at a festival a few weeks ago, half-listening through an open window when I heard it! Written for a fine singer from Ballinasloe called Johhny Johnson by his wife Pat - who's a fine songwriter. I'll chase up the words when I get a chance. Regards |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: Reinhard Date: 27 Aug 13 - 04:09 PM Cool Beans, "This Is Us" is such a generic title that I wouldn't bet a cent of this pop group honouring or dissing Mudcat. They have very probably never heard of us. |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: Cool Beans Date: 27 Aug 13 - 05:19 PM I'm sure you're right, Reinhard. |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: Tootler Date: 27 Aug 13 - 06:32 PM Shouldn't Mudcat be claiming copyright on the title??? |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: doc.tom Date: 28 Aug 13 - 04:50 AM 'Yer us be' ? |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: Genie Date: 28 Aug 13 - 11:16 AM Can't copyright protect a title. Which is a pity, since Mudcat might have been able to make tens of dollars from royalties on that title otherwise. |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: wysiwyg Date: 28 Aug 13 - 12:47 PM Not to mention that 'us' means diff peeps in diff contexts and thus could be construed as not even being the same word. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: michaelr Date: 28 Aug 13 - 03:21 PM As the person who came up with "This Is Us" as title for the Mudcat CD series, I cannot claim it to be original - I was inspired by the song of the same name written by Mark Knopfler and recorded by him and Emmylou Harris. |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: Ron Davies Date: 28 Aug 13 - 06:12 PM Maybe ours should have been "These R Us" with a backwards R. Unless that's asking for trouble--or we possibly don't want to identify with a well-known chain. Wonder if the backwards R has been copyrighted. Might not be easy--after all, it's a Russian word, meaning "I" as I recall. |

Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: GUEST,JTT Date: 29 Aug 13 - 06:04 PM Reminds me of the English teacher's lament after World War II; she sent her kids off to the country during the Blitz hoping they'd come back with better grammar, but she said they went off saying "we is", and came back saying "us be". |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: gnu Date: 29 Aug 13 - 06:20 PM It's flattering, not flustering. Or it would be flattering IF they copied it and it would be flustering IF us all cared. |
Subject: RE: Pop group honors/rips off Mudcat From: open mike Date: 30 Aug 13 - 01:05 AM so we can't sue them, after all? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey9kdeOjT3o go here to hear and see "This Is Us" by Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. |
