As a proud contributor to Mudcat's "This Is Us" CD anthology, I note that teen heartthrobs One Direction is using that very title for its upcoming movie. Wonder if anyone will mistake them for us.

I was having a quiet break outside a pub at a festival a few weeks ago, half-listening through an open window when I heard it! Written for a fine singer from Ballinasloe called Johhny Johnson by his wife Pat - who's a fine songwriter. I'll chase up the words when I get a chance.

Cool Beans, "This Is Us" is such a generic title that I wouldn't bet a cent of this pop group honouring or dissing Mudcat. They have very probably never heard of us.

Can't copyright protect a title. Which is a pity, since Mudcat might have been able to make tens of dollars from royalties on that title otherwise.

Not to mention that 'us' means diff peeps in diff contexts and thus could be construed as not even being the same word.

As the person who came up with "This Is Us" as title for the Mudcat CD series, I cannot claim it to be original - I was inspired by the song of the same name written by Mark Knopfler and recorded by him and Emmylou Harris.

Maybe ours should have been "These R Us" with a backwards R.   Unless that's asking for trouble--or we possibly don't want to identify with a well-known chain. Wonder if the backwards R has been copyrighted. Might not be easy--after all, it's a Russian word, meaning "I" as I recall.

Reminds me of the English teacher's lament after World War II; she sent her kids off to the country during the Blitz hoping they'd come back with better grammar, but she said they went off saying "we is", and came back saying "us be".
