I'm like, ah, ya know, this totally happy, um, vallee girl from somewhere on the, um coast, and, like I heard that, um someone named Max, and a bunch of his cats(?), like um, needed some sunshine, so I like came over right away and, um, like I wanted to tell them, um, like the sun, ya know, well, it's really hot, but like it is sooo far away, like ya know it can't burn ya, but ya can get a really cool tan! So, like I just wanted to tell ya Max and tell your cats, or whatever they are man, that um, like, you know, man, like the Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow, um, just like that little girl said in the movie. Like even if ya don't live where I do, it's really cool, cause it goes everywhere...it's just like rolling around in the sky, ya know? And, it's free, isn't that totally awesome and it shines on everybody, 'so cool, nobody hasta pay, like it is just there and no matter, man, it doesn't matter what yer doin' or nothing. If ya just wake up and look out your window, like, it is just THERE, ya know? And, like it's got these really cool vibes that'll make ya feel better, well....unless ya sit out without a sunscreen, but anyway, it's so awesome cause it can warm up your whole body and make it just feel so totally awesome and cool, ya know? And, like pretty soon, you'll feel it inside with those vibes, ya know and you'll feel better, especially if ya wear those really awesome glasses I've got, ya know, the ones where the glass is like rose-coloured, ya know? And, and, um...wow, kool...um, oh yea, well, that's all I wanted to say...um, anybody else seen the Sunshine...isn't it totally awesome that it comes out everyday, for free??!!! Um, peace, man and good vibes to ya or whatever you, um, old people say to each other.

Wow, yes, far out. Too much.

Hmm. I looked out of the window, and it's really really dark.

And where I am it's really cool too. Freezing as it happens, with lots of lovely rain. And I've got to go out, far out, into the lovely cool freezing rain and persuade this freedom-loving cat to come inside.

But you know one thing? Ain't no need to worry about that old sunscreen round here in November. Just the way it's meant to be. Leaves and big bl;azing bonfires, and fireworks.

Happy Diwali everybody.

TROUBLE TREE
(Author unknown)

The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start.

While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. After opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.

"Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again."

"Funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to pick'em up, there ain't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before."

Weeds Are Flowers Too
Author Unknown

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read.
Beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree.
Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown,
For the world was intent on dragging me down.

And if that weren't enough to ruin my day,
A young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play.
He stood right before me with his head tilted down
And said with great excitement, "Look what I found!"

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight,
With its petals all worn-not enough rain, or too little light.
Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play,
I faked a small smile and then shifted away.

But instead of retreating he sat next to my side
And placed the flower to his nose and declared with overacted surprise,
"It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too.
That's why I picked it; here, it's for you."

The weed before me was dying or dead.
Not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red.
But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave.
So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need."

But instead of him placing the flower in my hand,
He held it midair without reason or plan.
It was then that I noticed for the very first time
That weed-toting boy could not see: he was blind.

I heard my voice quiver, tears shone like the sun
As I thanked him for picking the very best one.
You're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play,
Unaware of the impact he'd had on my day.

I sat there and wondered how he managed to see
A self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree.
How did he know of my self-indulged plight?
Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see
The problem was not with the world; the problem was me.
And for all of those times I myself had been blind,
I vowed to see the beauty in life, and appreciate every second that's mine.

And then I held that wilted flower up to my nose
And breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose
And smiled as I watched that young boy, another weed in his hand
About to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.

Dog Haiku
(Anon.)

I love my master;
Thus I perfume myself with
This long-rotten squirrel.

I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be

Today I sniffed
Many dog behinds-I celebrate
By kissing your face.

I sound the alarm!
Paper boy-come to kill us all-
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I sound the alarm!
Garbage man-come to kill us all-
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I lift my leg and
Whiz on each bush . Hello, Spot-
Sniff this and weep

How do I love thee?
The ways are numberless as
My hairs on the rug.

My human is home!
I am so ecstatic I have
Made a puddle

I Hate my choke chain-
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack
Ack Ack Ack Ack Ack!

Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot -no greater bliss-well,
Maybe catching rats

Look in my eyes and
Deny it. No human could
Love you as much I do

The cat is not all
Bad-she fills the litter box
With Tootsie Rolls

Dig under fence-why?
Because it's there. Because it's
There. Because it's there.

I am your best friend,
Now, always, and especially
When you are eating.

My owners' mood is
Romantic-I lie near their
Feet. I fart a big one.

But, like, Micca, ya know, like that, um ceedee thingy, like that goes in the um player and then those um wire thingies ya hafta stick in somewhere on um like that drive hard or whatever ya call it, and like somebody the other day, Sheila I think it was, so anyway she was saying like how she got hardwired one time or was it, um...oh, yeah, like hotwired! Oh,no, it was with her pewter not her boyfriend, well anyway, she started surfing, like it was really narly, but like it was dry, ya know? Cause she wasn't even in the water, ya know? She was right there in her, um bedroom, ya know and like this nerd came over and hooked up everything and like she went surfing on the NET! Like it was really cool, but like I don' understand how come you need a net if yer going surfing, cause aren't ya just sposed to stay on the board and how could they keep, like a net under you on the waves, anyway, ya know? Oh, and Micca, like I don't know what yer talkin' about. Whose this Bogart dude and what's a joint? Like I had tennis elbow one year, like from playing at the club; they had this really cute teacher, ya know and like we all wanted him, all I got was lessons, but it was so cool, well, um, until I hurt my elbow, that's a joint, ya know and I had to wear a brace and everything; it was so disgusting. I was so embarrassed, esp. when we went to the beach; I couldn't even surf! My parents are so lame, they were afraid I'd like hurt my elbow more ya know? Well, anyway, oh, and I don't smoke either, Micca, it's way gross! So, oh, I do take these really cool herbs, they're sposed ta make your hair look better and eyes shine brghter, and even my boobs are sposed to look better, too, although Jimmy hasn't noticed, yet, but if I keep doing those lifts, ya know, then the herb people said they'd get bigger, too and um, Clarrie's big sister did it and she looks way bigger, ya know, except we all think she just got implants, like Tiffy, ya know, or she's doing a lot of stuffin', but anyway, well, like uh,....mmmm well, oh yea, have fun surfing and don't get too wet, like ya know cause ya might mess up your hair before the party!

See ya later,

Ditzee Lee

I've got a secret, Penny. A few years ago, when my youngest daughter was in high school, she wanted to enliven a repsort she was doing on police dogs.I did a multi-story tapes for her of several different characters, reading/telling real police dogs stories, with fx, the whol enine yards, on a little cassette tape; even had our old dog stand in with a loud bacrk. Anyway, the one that was the easiest and by far the most popular was the valley girl and it seems to ahve stuck!:-) I guess for Spaw's Cletus, there's an answer in my Ditzee Lee!

LTS, my mother let worry to cause illness and eventually take her life. Stop, darlin! Nothing is worth it.

You probably already know you can do something like this, but maybe a reminder: Fill your mind with a blank screen, take deep, slow breaths, blow them out slowly, then build a picture of the perfect outworking of whatever is troubling you; give thanks for that or something better for the highest good of all concerned, and let it go. Blessed Be.

What is it about migraines, this week? First Rick, now you, are they contagious?**BG** Now, didja want a more physical remedy or just more cheering? "Perhaps it's caused by the weight of the hair?", she asked, running and ducking for cover!

Kat……I had an experience that shaped my feelings about the sun.

On a cold winter night, Hanna, a Winnabago Elder, held an out doors ceremony to bless one of my Native American flutes. This is a story in itself, but let me stay with the point, "The Sun". As a part of the ceremony Hanna smoked his pipe, holding it up high to the East, then to the South and then to West, following the path of the sun. As he held his Pipe high to the East, he talked about the sun as the beginning of life, then to the south, the giver of life, and then to the West, the sun set of life. North was the eternal life where the sun never sets.

The sun is truly the circle of life.

No one knows this secret place. You are in total seclusion from that place called the world.

The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity. The water is clear.

LLoyd, isn't that beautiful? I gave my NA flute to my niece for her birthday, but I do love their sound. I wrote a poem about a Lakota pipe ceremony I was part of a couple of years ago. Also, when I first had to go on oxygen, I went to a sweat that an Elder from S. Dakota came down here and did. His name was Super and the sweat and potlach afterwards were super. He did a clearing on me, as a gift. As he chanted and motioned with his hands over and around my body, I felt huge wings sweeping over me from behind, carrying away the hurt which had caused my sorrows. I had tears running down my face; it was such a powerful, yet brief walk on another side. I am ashamed to say that earlier that day when his wife complimented me on my totem necklace which I made and use only for sacred ceremonies, I did not give it to her. I think I should have and know I should have according to custom. I think if I can find their address, I will make her one and send it. Thanks for reminding of the Beauty of our Way.

And, now, because I *try* to Walk in Balance: LeeJ, doya think yer Vacant Lot would be interested in my Ditzee Lee? Sounds like they're on the same wave length!**BG**

CONGRESS PASSES AMERICANS WITH NO ABILITIES ACT

WASHINGTON, DC--
On Tuesday, Congress approved the Americans With No Abilities Act, sweeping new legislation that provides benefits and protection for more than 135 million talentless Americans.

The act, signed into law by President Clinton shortly after its passage, is being hailed as a major victory for the millions upon millions of U.S. citizens who lack any real skills or uses.

"Roughly 50 percent of Americans -- through no fault of their own -- do not possess the talent necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society," said Clinton, a longtime ANA supporter. "Their lives are futile hamster-wheel existences of unrewarding, dead-end busywork: xeroxing documents written by others, fulfilling mail-in rebates for Black & Decker toaster ovens, and processing bureaucratic forms that nobody will ever see. Sadly, for these millions of nonabled Americans, the American dream of working hard and moving up through the ranks is simply not a reality."

Under the Americans With No Abilities Act, more than 25 million important-sounding "middle man" positions will be created in the white-collar sector for nonabled persons, providing them with an illusory sense of purpose and ability. Mandatory, non-performance-based raises and promotions will also be offered to create a sense of upward mobility for even the most unremarkable, utterly replaceable employees.

The legislation also provides corporations with incentives to hire nonabled workers, including tax breaks for those who hire one non-germane worker for every two talented hirees.

Finally, the Americans With No Abilities Act also contains tough new measures to prevent discrimination against the nonabled by banning prospective employers from asking such job-interview questions as, "What can you bring to this organization?" and "Do you have any special skills that would make you an asset to this company?"

"As a nonabled person, I frequently find myself unable to keep up with co-workers who have something going for them," said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as an unessential filing clerk at a Minneapolis tile wholesaler last month because of her lack of notable skills. "This new law should really help people like me."

With the passage of the Americans With No Abilities Act, Gertz and millions of other untalented, unessential citizens can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Said Clinton: "It is our duty, both as lawmakers and as human beings, to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her lack of value to society, some sort of space to take up in this great nation."

Hey Caitrin, I have come back to working with HS students after a mainly admin job in a University because I missed "student contact" Which I missed very much. Some of the students are very clever what is absent,or appears to be is common sense, and also of course their lack of experience of life shows. It is my nature to take the P about this, But I wouldn't have spent the last 35 years with them if I didn't see it as important, and it gives me a great thrill now when ex-students come and see me or phone to let me know how they are doing. I am proud to say I still know many of them today and some are friends that I see socially.

Micca, in my part of the world, to take a P seems to mean something rather different than it does in the sentence you used it in above. Can you enlighten me as to your meaning? Thanks.

Alan C, its Taking the Piss not a piss, as mentioned elsewhere "I am too old to know everything" but some times to take a rise out of students who think they do is almost irrisistable, But not in a malicious way I hope.

I suppose "take a rise out" of might be just about as suspect as "take the piss out of..."
Do you think we should try to get Babelfish to stick in a translation facility for some of the different varieties of English?

Though even where the meaning doesn't alter across the Atlantic, the weight given to the words changes. I once commented in a post to an American based news group that something "Hurt like buggery", and the responses indicated I'd gone well beyond the limit. But father-in-law, aged 88, and a pillar of the local Church, would say something like that without turning a hair - but he'd never dream of using a "four letter word".

Ah, this is because the bugger word has been used so frequently here in the UK that it is losing its original meaning. A Bugger (noun) is usually considered to be a bit of a sod, cheeky, mischievious and rude, not really much of a threat, whereas bugger (excl. verb) is considered a bit of a no-sense word like drat, dang, and bother rather than nonsense which would be scrobbly. To bugger (verb) is something only gentlemen do at public school and so is not considered rude. Buggery (adj) is taken from the verb, buggery. As an adj. it is usually to describe something painful, hurt like buggery in UK would be considered very painful, but Stateside where buggery is still a verb, it is considered obscene. Mainly because it deals with homosexuality and a lot of people are still over sensitive about that. The phrase 'I don't give a bugger' is taken to mean 'I don't care' in the UK, but is a statement of sexual intent in the US. The phrase 'Oh bugger it', basically means 'f**k it', but in a cruder fashion rather than a ruder phrase.

It is quite a British word, as an adjecive or a noun, its use as a verb is increasing, but is still considered rather affectionate - he's an old bugger, but we love him - sort of thing.

Hope this clears up a few things, - oh, the Aussies pronounce it bagga!

OK, allow for local dialect and accent, there are many regional variations. My granfy used to say 'Oh buggerrrrrrrrrr it you', being as he was from Dorset and every sentence ended with 'you'. The rrrrs are supposed to indicate a hard and prolonged er sound. My NZ speaking Dorset hybird neice (when mother isn't around) says 'Baggerrrrr', which is quite difficult, but she has grown up with a mother who says things like 'yer gurt pillock' meaning 'you great pillock' - pillock being shortened version of the mediaeval word "pillicocks", another word for bollocks that we never got around to mentioning in a previous thread..... and a father that says 'blaady heel' for bloody hell. Not a very happy thought, but good for a laugh over the phone....

Lovely regional accent story in the Guardian newspaper diary today - as told by the English politician Denis Healey, about a famous explorer called Sir Vivian Fuchs who has died a few days ago:

Soon after returning from his trans-Antarctic journey in 1958, he was given a civic reception by the mayor of Leeds.

In the speech of welcome, in his broad Yorkshire brogue, his worship perpetually referred to Sir Vivian Fucks. Finally the guest of honour could take no more. He leant forward "Actually, it's pronounced FOOKS."

"We can't have that sort of language here!" replied the scandalised mayor.
