Thanks for the heads-up about this event. There are many people on Mudcat who will be very interested and do please keep us informed via this thread about any further developments. In fact, I'm pretty sure there will be some who would be happy to make an artistic contribution to any such developments.
Who are the organisers/promoters?

I know that Mellie Henrywood is making a collection to pay for the memorial plaque/stone to be placed near Cicely's grave, so if anyone wants to donate I'm sure she would be pleased to hear from you on the above email address. She is one of the organisers.

I'll now have to figure out how best to make an international donation to Mellie Henrywood's project. Anyone got a clue how much she is looking for?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Celebrating Cicely is planned for 21st June 2014 in and around the village of Bow in Devon, where she is buried. The organisers are Sylvia Watts and Mike Warman from Cornwall and Dick and Melanie Henrywood from Bow itself. The plan is to place a memorial stone by her grave in the afternoon and have other events culminating in a concert of her songs and poems in the evening. Donations towards the memorial stone (costing nearly £1000) would be very gratefully received. Further information will be released as plans develop but you can register your interest at celebrating@cicelyfoxsmith.org.uk

From: GUEST,SYLVIA WATTS

More details of Celebrating Cicely 21 June 2014 in Bow

The day's happenings will start with the Blessing and Clipping of the additional headstone, which will be set adjacent to the original. The new one will underline her importance as a poet and a traveller and include a line from her work. The original states her name, dates and a line from a Raleigh poem. There is a footpath from the village to the church across fields so bring your wellies – there IS a lane too…..
There will be a guided walk/visit to her home and garden– and we have the agreement of the current residents. Here may be seen an old cob wall - probably the very one on which she based her Devon dialect poem. In the Village Hall there will be a Discussion Forum, an evening session after the main concert for all to join in, bar and other refreshments, reception and merchandise. The early evening concert is in the Church Hall (different church) opposite the Village Hall and features Martyn Windham-Read, Moira Craig, Tom Lewis, Joyce & Danny McLeod, Shake a Leg, Jim Saville, Bill Wilkes,   Barrie Mathers, Peter and Barbara Snape – and others from all over the country. All lovers of Cicely's words singing her poems, sometimes to their own tunes. All singers and writers of tunes will be credited
As Sarah Morgan wrote on Mudcat – 'I think it is a tribute to CFS's ability to touch the heart in simple language, that despite numerous minor alterations, the integrity and essence of her poem(s) …stayed the same. From what I have come to know of her, I think she would not be averse to the idea of her poems becoming part of a living English tradition..30/8/02'
Sarah has hit the nail on the head – singers and writers have brought Cicely Fox Smith into the English folk tradition. Please do come along and support that idea.
Tickets, and further information, available
                     from the website      cicelyfoxsmith.org.uk
                                  From    WeGotTickets
and from us Melly and Dick Henrywood, Mike Warman, and myself Sylvia Watts.
Look forward to seeing you on what I am sure will be a most enjoyable, interesting and important occasion
Sylvia.

Thinking of going to this, but staying on the Saturday night so we don't have any worries about driving home late. Can see a few B&Bs listed under accommodation, but if we could take our caravan, we'd like to stay in a caravan park. Anyone know if there is one close by?

Not long to go now. Please check website cicelyfoxsmith.org.uk for updated inf. Proceedings start at 2 pm with a walk to Cicely's former garden and the site of 'The Old Cob Wall'. Then 3 pm for the graveside 'Clipping' ceremony and unveiling of the stone. Off to the Village Hall for Devon cream teas and the Cicely discussion forum. At 6pm we have our concert with many top drawer folkies performing free for the cause. There will be a bar, raffle and auction (First Editions, signed books, CFS and Morpurgo's War Horse). For survivors there's a singaround until late.
This is a non-profit event, purely to honour Cicely and raise her profile with a day's celebration and commemoration. The stone is costing about £1,200 as it is York Stone to match her headstone. We are fundraising through donations, ticket sales, teas, raffle, auction, bar and merchandise. Despite huge Cicely following, support for this event to celebrate her life and work has been slow to take hold. We have been working hard to organise this for the past two years and would very much appreciate support from those who value Cicely's contribution to the world.
She ended her life quietly here in Devon, unsung. Come on, let's hear it for Cicely! Please support us, however you can. Thank you. Look forward to seeing those who will on 21 June.

Congratulations to the organisers and all the volunteers at the CELEBRATING CICELY event in Bow, Devon.
Although the concert was rather long, there were some twenty performers to be fitted in, so the twin breaks worked fine.
Food and liquid refreshment were very good -lovely chicken curry.
Wonderful to hear so many poems and their musical settings.
Two years in the making, but twelve years since the idea was first mooted.
Regretfully, I was unable to make the final singaround, due to circumstances beyond my control.
One particular highlight was a local resident reading "The Old Cob Wall" in her Devonian accent.
So poignant to end the concert with the late Sara Morgan's musical setting "Home Lads Home" sung (to the original poem "Homeward")by Moira Craig. This popular song has greatly brought to the attention of a wider public, the poems of Cicely Fox Smith.

My own renditions were "The Figurehead" (overlooked by the editors of The Complete Poems of Cicely Fox Smith --1st edition) and "Old Fastnet" to a musical setting by Dick Miles -- and thank you for that Dick!
The organisers hope to have both a DVD & CD available soon (watch this space!)

Thank you Bradfordian for your kind words, we are glad you enjoyed the concert. The weather, the dedication ceremony and the singaround were wonderful too. Please visit Nymet Tracey churchyard to see Cicely's new stone. We also found records to prove that her older sister, Margaret Scott Smith, had her ashes interred with Cicely in 1973. There will be feedback and photos up on our website (cicelyfoxsmith.org.uk). A few copies of the 52-page souvenir booklet are still available at £4. Thank you to everyone for their generosity and support; fund-raising overall successful.
