When I was a boy my Aunt ran a motel. One of the laundry machines was called a mangle. If you stuck your hand into it,......

Stick your hand in that crack and you won't get it back that's a Moray..."

Have you ever caught your bollocks in a rat trap?

no, but I do have a scar on my hand from when I put my hand in the ice chest door. I must have been very young when that happened!

Sorry about this but stand by for some very un-nettiquette languange.

I vaguely remember, from my misspent youth in Wallasey, Merseyside, a verse that started out;-

"Have you ever had your balls in a mangle,
And some silly cunt's turned the handle."

The rest, thankfully, has been consigned to oblivion. At any rate I can't remember it.

I heard it a bit less colourful, Fred:

"Have you ever had your bollocks in a mangle,
When some silly bugger's come and turned the handle?"

In my case the answer is "no", I'm very pleased to say!

Harry Boardman recited this in a series of Kid's songs and rhymes that he used to do and is recorded on "Golden Stream" - sadly well out of print although I think there may be cassettes of it floating around somewhere.

"Have yer ever had yer 'and in a mangle
And some silly bugger turns the 'andle?
Yer wrist goes flop and yer 'and drops off
Have yeeer .. ever had yer 'and in a mangle?"

The pause in the last line was put in by Harry - I suppose you had to hear him do it!

Cheers
Mark

When he was a kid, a mate of mine stuck his finger in his grandmother's mangle (the bit at the end where the 2 cogs mesh together)and it flipped him over in a somersault. She took him to the hospital on the bus! He lost a bit of the end of his finger.

A well-kown classic image:

Redneck Breast Exam

(just for reference.)

In at least some parts of the US, the term "mangle" is used in two ways.

The usage obviously meant here is the name for a pair of rollers you can run wet clothing between to squeeze out excess water while moving the laundry from the "wash tub" to the "rinse tub," or from "first rinse" to "final rinse." An alternate term for this device was a "wringer," and while more were still in use one might hear "I still use a wringer washer." Much of the thrill of doing the laundry disappeared when "centrifugal extraction" supplanted the method.

The term "mangle" was also used by some for a "clothes press" as used by commercial laundries and by a few home users in which the cloth was laid out on a flat "bed" or drraped over a long "roller" and another "bed" clamped down and a blast of steam blown through to "dry" the article and take all the wrinkles out. This kind of "iron" was too expensive for most home users, and considerable skill was required to use one for anything except "flat stuff," so even those who had one also used a "flatiron" for much of the laundry.

The earliest "wringers" (mangles) were hand cranked, so there were few real thrills unless a couple of kids decided to "help each other" so one turned the crank while the other poked the stuff into the crack between the rollers. When mechanization produced powered rolls, intelligent pepole used a short stick to poke the clothes into the crack. (My mom's stick was a broken pool cue smoothed and tapered to just the right dimensions, and hers was greatly admired by the other ladies in the neighborhood.)

John

JohninKansas, your photo only partly helps me recall a verse from many years ago, I wish I could remember it all.

Have you ever had your tits caught in a mangle,
What a tangle, what a mess,
Have you ever had your?????

The picture has been on the web for at least a few years, and recollection is that it's been linked here at least a couple of times - probably in one or more of the "Redneck" threads.

Of course I only offered the link as an aid for those who might not know what a "mangle" is.

Don't recall a lyric specific to that pic though. There was a comment elsewhere (long ago?) about a line something like "never dangle near the mangle" which might have made reference to a whole different group of songs/verses. (Sort of like never play leapfrog with a unicorn?)

Never let your braces dangle,
dingle, dingle dangle,
One old sport, he got caught,
Right in the middle of a mangle,
Right in the middle he went, by gum,
Rolled as flat as linoleum,
Now he's singing in Kingdom Come,
"Never let your braces dangle".

Used to sing that one as a Girl Guide campfire song: thought if it when I saw the thread title. Might have to also explain to some what linoleum is!

From Liverpool - not a million miles fro Lancashire - though we never admit it!
Did you ever have your balls in a mangle,
When some silly bugger turned the handle?
Your balls go "bang" and your dick goes "twang",
Did you ever have your balls in a mangle?

The Dagenham version goes:

(you can sing this)

"Never put your balls in the mangle,
'Cos some silly sod will turn the handle.
Your balls will go pop;
It will paralyse your cock.
So never put your balls in the mangle."

For those who don't know what a mangle is, here it is. My second washing machine was a top-loader that wheeled up and attached by a hose to the hot tap to pour in the water, then you added detergent and clothes and closed the lid down and it chugged for half an hour or so, filling up the flat with suds-smelling steam. Then you took out the clothes into a basin and put the hose (or another?) into the sink to pump the water out, and filled it again with rinsing water; clothes out again and drain again, and finally you'd run the clothes through the mangle (aka wringer) to half-dry them before hanging them up to steam and drip and fill the flat with humid, mould-inducing steam.

This is why you don't put your mickey or any other part of you in a mangle
