The 2013 (14th Annual) Portsmouth (NH) Maritime Folk Festival (PMFF) will be taking place September 28th and 29th, in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

We've got a great lineup -- Ian Robb, Nicole Singer, Andrew McKay & Carole Etherton, Bob Webb & Dave Peloquin, Barry O'Brien, Jon & Rika, Peter & Audi Souza, Jeff Warner, Chris Maden, Bob Stuart, and lots of local talent such as Emery Hutchins, London Julie, Great Bay Sailor, Mudhook...

There's a full list with bios, etc. at the website -- PMFF

Everything is FREE! From the kid's program to the Saturday night concert, street busking, mini-concerts and open sings (TWO venues on Saturday), closing shanty blast on Sunday... This year's schedule is NOT up yet, but I'll let you know when it is.

The festival actually kicks off with the regular Friday evening trad session at The Press Room (4:30-9:00) on Daniel St. to get everyone in a nautical mood.

Come and enjoy all the FREE music and meet some "famous" Mudcatters!

Linn

great! just got the car checked out for the next marathon car trip & already got my vacation time approved, so we're ready for a fun time.

We've decided that we need to find some affordable farmland within an hours drive to retire to... the thousand plus mile roundtrips are getting a bit much.

That is a great line-up! I'll be at New Bedford's Working Waterfront Festival again that weekend. It's too bad that these two events are always on the same weekend.

I think we've had the date longer -- the PMFF is ALWAYS the last full weekend in September.

Mmmm! Sounds very tempting but it's a long way and I'm already booked that weekend!
But perhaps next year? Now where's my diary? I'll pencil it in!

Alan, where do you live?

As I think I said earlier, the festival is ALWAYS on the last full weekend of September, so definitely pencil it in as early as possible! Bookmark the website. There will probably be some videos from this year posted after the festival, and the website has some from previous years.

Hope you can make it next year!

Hi Linn.
I live in Alcester, near Stratford-upon-Avon in the middle of England but I do quite a bit of solo shanty (or chanty!) singing at many Shanty / Maritime Festivals all over the UK, eg in Falmouth, Harwich, Hull & Whitby, as well as in Australia, the Netherlands and New Zealand. I also sing with my shanty team, Sharp As Razors.
See www.alanwhitbread.co.uk & www.sharpasrazors.com.
I guess that I'd better get an early email to the organisers to be considered as a performer for next year's festival!
Meanwhile, have a great festival this year!
"Our ship is a-sailing out over the bar!"
Alan
PS Sinsull: Please say hello to Carole, Andrew & Terry for me. I'm sure they'll have a great time!

I'm sure you are correct, Linn. New Bedford's Working Waterfront Festival is a relative newcomer. It's them I blame for picking the dates that always conflict with the Portsmouth Event. If I lived about midway between the two, I'd go to Portsmouth instead.

Alan, if you're going to be in the New England area next year, there are contacts listed at the link in the first post of this thread.

I have three weekends in a row when I'll be gone, winter prep stuff to do, and I might just be going a bit crazier, but I'll be there.

Alan, you're being considered even as I type -- my husband Curmudgeon (Tom Hall) is the primary organizer (though we do have a hardworking board and a couple non-board -- me -- members who have a say in choosing performers) and I'm just about to print out your post and read it to him. (He's now blind as well as voiceless, so I take care of the PMFF email address, too.)

I will warn you, we're run entirely on donations and our pay scale is pretty much a token. But we offer a festival that is as much fun for the performers (talk to Carole and Andrew, or Andy Kenna, or Liam Robinson) as it is for festival goers. If you are going to be in the area anyway, we can offer a busman's holiday that's at least subsidized a little bit.

Please email us at pmff at comcast.net. (And please visit the website at the blue clicky above.)

A couple years ago we got what I think is our greatest compliment. Someone said the PMFF reminded them of Whitby twenty years ago. We're working hard to keep it a small but very intimate festival.

I'm actually askeert to look at the schedule right now. Sometimes the best strategy is to plant one's self in a venue and wait for all the acts to cycle through.

And I HAVE to post the article in this morning's Spotlight section of the Portsmouth Herald --

Great unofficial kick off to the festival at last night's Press Room session -- Carole and Andrew, Jon and Rika, Chris Maden, Jeff Warner, plus a lot of the regulars (and members of local bands London Julie and Great Bay Sailor). Lots of festival goers also in town early. And Diane and Mike Dibble who are visiting their daughter in Portsmouth and who are getting to the festival for the first time.
