Subject: Every time you say goodbye From: Brendy Date: 10 Nov 99 - 11:33 PM Hello there folks. I'm looking for the lyrics of this particular number. As far as I know It was either Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith. (and not 'Simply Red' as one idiot a few weeks ago over here was convinced of). I've done an arrangement on the guitar, and all I need now are the words to go with it! You would find one grateful little happy camper here if anyone could give me a bit of a hand on this one. Go raibh maith agaibh Bren. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every time you say goodbye From: Obloquy67 Date: 11 Nov 99 - 12:23 AM I'm guessing you mean "Every Time We Say Goodbye", which I think was by Cole Porter. Every time We say goodbye I die a little Every time we say goodbye I wonder why a little Why the stars above me, who must be in the know think so little of me, they allow you to go.... When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it- I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about it- There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor every time we say goodbye

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every time you say goodbye From: Brendy Date: 11 Nov 99 - 12:53 AM Excellent stuff Oblo me old mate! Quite straightforward enough really, but then Mr Porter certainly had a way with words. The song has been on my wish list for ages. I knew the tune alright but nobody I met knew the song well enough to be confident of the words; plus the fact I would hate to have told people that I learned the song from the singing of Mick Hucknall. Thanks again Breandán |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every time you say goodbye From: Helen Date: 11 Nov 99 - 02:38 AM Annie Lennox, of the Eurythmics, does a lovely version of this on the Red, Hot & Blue CD - and video. It was an AIDS benefit project with lots of interesting, mostly rock musicians singing Cole Porter songs and putting an interesting twist into the arrangements, in most cases. The first few times I listened to the CD I really was in two minds about it all, especially Tom Waits' version of It's the Wrong Time (or a title something like that). The more I listen to it now the more interesting things I hear in it. I love it. Helen |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every time you say goodbye From: Brendy Date: 11 Nov 99 - 04:08 PM Thanks Helen I will check that one out too, although as a general rule I don't like too hear too many versions of a song that I'm trying to learn. I find that it confuses me a bit when I'm trying to form my own approach to a song. But thanks for the tip Breandán |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every time you say goodbye From: Peter T. Date: 11 Nov 99 - 05:10 PM Not to be a fussbudget or anything, but the phrase is "gods above me" not "stars above me". For some of us, Ella Fitzgerald's version in the Cloe Porter Songbook is the gold standard. Annie Lennox's version is pretty good too -- on a pretty crummy album!! It does have k.d. lang's "So In Love" on it, if I recall, which also helps redeem it. Her AIDS video remains for me the most powerful I have ever seen. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: Lyr Add: EV'RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE (Cole Porter) From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Dec 11 - 05:10 PM For those who don't mind being a little confused by having "too many versions," here's my transcription from Spotify: EV'RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE Written by Cole Porter ©1944 As sung by Mabel Mercer on "Mabel Mercer Sings Cole Porter" (1955) 1. Ev'ry time we say goodbye, I die a little. Ev'ry time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little. Why the gods above me, Who must be in the know, Think so little of me, They allow you to go. 2. When you're near, there's such an air Of spring about it. I can hear a lark somewhere Begin to sing about it. There's no love song finer, But how strange the change from major to minor, Ev'ry time we say goodbye! REPEAT PART 2. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: cptsnapper Date: 11 Dec 11 - 05:12 PM The Cole Porter Song Book has an opening stanza as follows: We love each other so deeply that I ask you this, sweetheart, why should we quarrel ever, why can't we be enough clever, never to part. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: Arthur_itus Date: 11 Dec 11 - 05:18 PM To me Ella Fitzgerald's version is superior to anybody else's. This version has stayed with me all through my life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGNLLJz4Ajw |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: Gurney Date: 11 Dec 11 - 09:15 PM I think Shirley Bassey did a cover. Might be easier to find in England. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: GUEST,Guest Date: 22 Feb 17 - 07:53 AM Don't know why a Cole Porter song would be on a supposedly folk orientated site - but then what do I know? And it is a great song. |
Subject: ADD: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Jan 18 - 12:01 AM We're mostly musicians here, but our interests often go beyond the folk genre. Why force people to go elsewhere, if their interests sometimes lie beyond the folk realm? An occasional Cole Porter song can add another dimension to a folk performance. As always, I'm sure Jim Dixon's transcription of the Mabel Mercer recording is perfect, but there's a verse in The Complete Lyrics of Cole Porter (by Robert Kimball, published by Knopf in 1983, page 256). cptsnapper posted the verse above, but here is the song all together. EV'RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE (Cole Porter) VERSE: We love each other so deeply That I ask you thins, sweetheart, Why should we quarrel ever, Why can't we be enough clever Never to part? REFRAIN Ev'ry time we say goodbye, I die a little, Ev'ry time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little. Why the gods above me Who must be in the know, Think so little of me, They allow you to go. When you're near there's such an air Of spring about it, I can hear a lark somewhere Begin to sing about it. There's no love song finer, But how strange The change From major to minor, Ev'ry time we say goodbye, Ev'ry single time we say goodbye. Written by Cole Porter ©1944. Introduced by Nan Wynn. Like Arthur_itis, my favorite recording of this song is by Ella Fitzgerald: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGNLLJz4Ajw Carly Simon also did a good job of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtlyEE9QCUI (although I'm not sure I like the video) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: jojofolkagogo Date: 10 Jan 18 - 11:12 AM Yes, Joe, I sing this one at folk club singarounds occasionally. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: gillymor Date: 10 Jan 18 - 12:15 PM For me the definitive version is also Ella's but I heard this guy sing it in Disney's excellent remake of the Parent Trap during a sad parting scene and my was floored by it. When the closing credits revealed the singer to be Ray Charles I was floored again as a lifelong R.C. fan. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: Helen Date: 10 Jan 18 - 03:22 PM I especially like the melody at this point in the song: "But how strange the change from major to minor". A melodic echo of the words. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: gillymor Date: 11 Jan 18 - 09:55 AM I don't know what is more noteworthy, Helen, that fine lyric by Porter or the 18+ year gap between posts to the same thread. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: MoorleyMan Date: 11 Jan 18 - 04:56 PM What I find most curious is that none of the recordings mentioned include the Verse (mentioned above) that's given in the Complete Cole Porter Songbook. I don't recall ever hearing it sung, in fact. So, does anyone out there have the tune for the verse? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: Helen Date: 11 Jan 18 - 07:40 PM Interesting comments about the song on this page: Susannah McCorkle , on her album Easy to Love: Songs of Cole Porter is one of the few singers who includes Porter's verse. She also includes the final line of the song, omitted by many. I suspect that the first verse was used in the original show: Seven Lively Arts produced by Billy Rose reopened the renovated Ziegfeld Theater on December 7, 1944. And gillymor, when you have been a Mudcatter for as long as some of us, you'll realise that old threads never die, they get reincarnated regularly like zombies getting back up to party and then slinking away until the next time. As far as Mudcatters go, you're kneehigh to a grasshopper - but stick around, and we might forget you are a relative newbie. LOL |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: gillymor Date: 12 Jan 18 - 05:30 AM I have much to learn, sensei. That's a very cool website, Helen. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: GUEST Date: 12 Jan 18 - 11:56 AM Fwiw, I have sung "Everyone We Say Goodbye" in folk clubs. I pick rather than strum the accompaniment so that it sounds 'folkie'. It's one of my all-time favourite songs. Beautifully crafted by the Master. It was written for a show that flopped however it became popular during WW2 when soldiers were leaving home. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: keberoxu Date: 19 Jan 18 - 01:20 PM Now here's what's noteworthy: a lifelong Ray Charles fan who doesn't recognize a recording from the album "Ray Charles and Betty Carter" in the early '60's. Personally I am just getting acquainted with that album -- I never even heard their chart-climbing interpretation of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" before this year -- but I figured all the Ray Charles lovers knew about that album. It's been reissued from the original masters. Although the album went unavailable for a short time during the technology switches from vinyl to cassette tapes to compact discs to digital, that album is easily purchased online now, in any or all of those formats. Oh, and "The Parent Trap" didn't use the entire track, in which Ray Charles begins singing the chorus solo, then bows out, and with a change of key, the orchestra backs Betty Carter singing the chorus in turn. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: keberoxu Date: 19 Jan 18 - 03:54 PM And here it is: all nearly-five-minutes of Cole Porter's chorus (no, they don't sing the verse) sung through twice. Ray Charles and Betty Carter |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter) From: gillymor Date: 19 Jan 18 - 03:58 PM I'm an R.C. fan but never cared for Carter's singing. I've stuck to his R&B stuff. |
