As far as I know It was either Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith. (and not 'Simply Red' as one idiot a few weeks ago over here was convinced of). I've done an arrangement on the guitar, and all I need now are the words to go with it! You would find one grateful little happy camper here if anyone could give me a bit of a hand on this one. I knew the tune alright but nobody I met knew the song well enough to be confident of the words; plus the fact I would hate to have told people that I learned the song from the singing of Mick Hucknall. It was an AIDS benefit project with lots of interesting, mostly rock musicians singing Cole Porter songs and putting an interesting twist into the arrangements, in most cases. The first few times I listened to the CD I really was in two minds about it all, especially Tom Waits' version of It's the Wrong Time (or a title something like that). The more I listen to it now the more interesting things I hear in it. I love it. Helen |

For some of us, Ella Fitzgerald's version in the Cloe Porter Songbook is the gold standard. Annie Lennox's version is pretty good too -- on a pretty crummy album!! It does have k.d. lang's "So In Love" on it, if I recall, which also helps redeem it. Her AIDS video remains for me the most powerful I have ever seen. yours, Peter T. |

She also includes the final line of the song, omitted by many. I suspect that the first verse was used in the original show: Seven Lively Arts produced by Billy Rose reopened the renovated Ziegfeld Theater on December 7, 1944. And gillymor, when you have been a Mudcatter for as long as some of us, you'll realise that old threads never die, they get reincarnated regularly like zombies getting back up to party and then slinking away until the next time. As far as Mudcatters go, you're kneehigh to a grasshopper - but stick around, and we might forget you are a relative newbie. LOL |

I pick rather than strum the accompaniment so that it sounds 'folkie'. It's one of my all-time favourite songs. Beautifully crafted by the Master. It was written for a show that flopped however it became popular during WW2 when soldiers were leaving home. |

Personally I am just getting acquainted with that album -- I never even heard their chart-climbing interpretation of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" before this year -- but I figured all the Ray Charles lovers knew about that album. It's been reissued from the original masters. Although the album went unavailable for a short time during the technology switches from vinyl to cassette tapes to compact discs to digital, that album is easily purchased online now, in any or all of those formats. Oh, and "The Parent Trap" didn't use the entire track, in which Ray Charles begins singing the chorus solo, then bows out, and with a change of key, the orchestra backs Betty Carter singing the chorus in turn. |
