Musically, it sounds like a white, 20th century country-style gospel. You can hear it on (where else?) Youtube at George Jones sings

"dialect"-
Was this a Negro hymn? What was the original?

My curiosity aroused.

Dick, I found this reference: "as I wander by that lonesome strand" Do a google search for that term and you will find mention of a book, "Dark of the Moon"? The following is transcribed from the dialect used in the book...using an unfamiliar computer gizmo so mistakes may occur. Does it fit what you remember?

"As I Wander Through that Blessed Strand"

Take my hand, take my hand, and lead me through the blessed land
Oh blessed Jesus take my hand
Take my hand, take my hand And lead me through the sinking sand
Oh blessed Jesus take my hand

As I wander by that pleasant strand
There is a friend who waits for me
He will come and take me by the hand
He is the Christ of Galilee

This will be my feeble prayer, O Lord,
And I'll do the best I can
As I kneel in prayer, I hope to find you there
Blessed Jesus, hold my hand
