I'm trying to find more info. on this song.

"My heart once was happy as I sang on my way,
With my Little Boy Blue by my side.
He cheered me along with his laughter so gay,
'Til... "

"Then one lonely night, while the world slumbered deep,
An angel came down from the sky,
He picked up my baby and rocked him to sleep,
And sailed him to sweet paradise."

etc.

I believe the chorus is something like:

"As my Little Boy Blue, closed his eyes and went to sleep,
He prayed the Lord his soul to keep,
And then he closed his big...eyes, and sailed to paradise,
As (And) my Little Boy Blue went to sleep."

I know the song and I can't find anything on it either, but this is what I can remember, the lyrics aren't exact word for word probably, its been a long time since I have heard it.

My heart once was happy, I sang on my way
With my little boy blue by my side
He cheered me along with his laughter so gay
And the storm clouds set mountains so high,
Then one stormy night how the world slumbered deep
An angel came down from the sky
And he picked up my baby and rocked him to sleep
And he took him to sweet paradise.

Oh how my little boy blue closed his eyes and went to sleep
He prayed the Lord my soul to keep
And if I die before I wake
The lord my soul to take,
Now darling mother do not weep,
God bless my daddy too
For he's been so kind and true
Our home dear Lord I know you'll keep
And he closed his big blue eyes
And sailed to paradise
How my little boy blue went to sleep.

And it goes in to a man talking about how "your mom has picked up all your toys" etc.

My mom thinks this song was performed by Jimmy Davis and I found the title My Little Boy Blue listed in the Jimmy Davis archival collection at the louisiana university but can't find an album or recording of the song

I found a song from Jimmie Davis on his "How Great Thou Art" Album with these lyrics. The title of the song is "My Little Boy Blue".
I have purchased a few copies of the album on ebay. I would not have found this song without your help and the help of all your patrons. Thank you. I think I have been searching for this song for more than 20 years. My grandfather use to play this album when we would visit and I sang the song from memory to put my kids to sleep until they were old enough to protest. Great Album by a Great man. Hope this helps.

Here's my transcription from a recording I heard on Spotify:

MY LITTLE BOY BLUE
As sung by Sons of Song on "Songs of Faith: Southern Gospel Legends Series: Sons of Song Quartet, Vol. 1" (2009)

My heart once was happy; I sang on my way
With my little boy blue by my side.
He cheered me along with his laughter so gay
When the storm clouds the sunlight would hide;
But
one lonely night all the world slumbered deep
When an angel came down from the skies,
Then
he picked up my baby and rocked him to sleep
And he took him to sweet paradise.

When my little boy blue closed his eyes and went to sleep,
He prayed: "The Lord my soul will keep,
And if I die before I wake,
The Lord my soul will take.
Now, darling mother, do not weep.
God bless my daddy too,
For he's been so kind and true.
Our home, dear Lord, I know you'll keep."
Then he closed his big blue eyes
And sailed to paradise,
When my little boy blue went to sleep.

SPOKEN: His playthings are still where he put them away
In a plain little box by the bed.
I can still see him there at the close of the day.
I can still hear the words that he said.
Each night he comes back to our house in a dream,
And we sit on the rug on the floor,
And we take out his playthings and play once again
And we live in our haven once more.
It seems I hear voices each night and each morn
Saying: "Little boy blue, come blow your horn.
Where's the little boy who looked after the sheep?"
And I answer: "He's yonder fast asleep."
"Will you go wake him?" "No, no, not I,
For he's guarded by angels up there in the sky."
Someday when my work in this earth is all over,
And I cross o'er life's mystic sea,
I know I'll find him on heaven's bright shore
'Cause he said he'd be waitin' for me.
Then we'll take out his playthings and play once again.
There'll be new ones then, all sparkling and red.
Then I'll be well repaid for each tear and each pain
When I kiss him and tuck him in bed.

SUNG: Then he closed his big blue eyes
And sailed to paradise
When my little boy blue went to sleep.

I can't believe I finally found this song. My mom sang this to me as a child. She has passed away and I couldn't remember all the words. Her version is a little different. She started with "Once I was so happy, I sang on my way". Either way I am so happy to find this. Thank you

When my precious, blue eyes nephew Clifton passed away from Cystic Fibrosis my Mother would play this song. He was brilliant and knew our King would be there to take him one day but also knew he would be safe and among our beautiful family...waiting when we join them all.
So thankful for these memories...I have wanted the full lyrics of this song for over 30 years.
Thank you so much,
Jenny M.
