Fri 13/Sept 2013. Slinger Francisco in a coma NY hospital, please pray for King Sparrow.

Sparrow`s brilliant "spoof" manifesto demonstrates just why an electorate should be wary....politicians and promises?, Cheups!

The OP was requesting the lyrics of a song, no answer found yet. But Paderewski absolutely satisfies your criterion, Tattie, not only being established, but world famous as a pianist. He then became one of the main authors of the Treaty of Versailles.

In more recent history, some popular singers ran for presidency in Latin American countries, winning quite considerable electorates. A president of the USA had been a B-movie actor before - certainly a useful training. Good skills in songwriting or musical drama may also help to set the highlights for greatest effect. Of course, being president need not be the same as actually running the country.

Most of the last few posts seem to have drifted from the original post idea of (established?) musicians running the country, and turned it round to established politicians who happen to play a musical instrument.
So, how about Martin Carthy for British Prime Minister, Bruce Springsteen for President of the USA, etc?

Well, if Adolf does not qualify, Reinhard Heydrich might; he ran a protectorate if not a country.

If someone wants to disprove my point, identical twins are required, such as the Kaczyńskis, but of exactly identical education except for music. -

More to the thread title, and staying in Poland: Ignacy Jan Paderewski was a famous musician, became rich (!), and finally Prime Minister (dominated by a strong president, though). He certainly did get some work done, but his sensitivity is not praised by everybody. He is said to have made substantial private donations to the national budget! (I wonder if these were tax-deductible.)

As I said, the impact of music teaching may not be too big and not work for everyone, but is worth a try.

Well, he was a fairly competent painter.

PS - you've all forgotten Alastair Campbell.

Idi Amin played the accordion (reasonably well).

Stalin was a choirboy.

Margaret Thatcher played the piano

So did Richard Nixon:

Mussolini played the violin.

Pinochet was a DJ of sorts:

While I am not convinced that musicians, professionals or amateurs, are morally superior to others, I think that some musical training, particularly in groups such as school bands, is a valuable additional credential. You can learn team play in a football team as well, but music can add a connection to many corners of the human mind and soul. I think we can sometimes see the difference even among leaders appearing in TV shows, however ground-down by tough business.

Too bad that Mudcat often fails to testify for that idea.

We'd have no trams in Edinburgh, the Independence debate would be done and dusted, and we wouldn't be repeatedly wading into everyone else's wars!

It'd be an unmitigated disaster. You lot can barely tie your shoes, let alone pay attention for five minutes. And that's when you're sober.

The "experiment" might have already been done? I seem to remember Clinton was a sax player, Condoleeza(sp?)Rice wanted to be a concert pianist and Blair played guitar.

Music education would flourish and universal health care would be a given. No taxes on gear, instruments, and sheet music.

Maybe I could get a Senate appointment!

Peace, Mooh.

Just think - if politicians wrote the music and the songs! Plagiarism and theft would be rife, and Mucat would be a QuANGO.

Sorry, don't know the song you want, but I know one by Canadian singer-songwriter Eileen McGann with the verse,

Folksingers in the government, and all the laws must rhyme
Folksingers in the government, we'll have such a time
Jamming about policy, and singing party line....

I don't know the song but what a great idea!

We'd all have an idea of where we want to go and how to get there. Diversity would be welcome, innovations would be popular, skill and talent would be lauded and rewarded, beauty would be recognized, and we'd all finish together. Wait- huh?

Hi.. I seem to remember a song about if musicians ran the country. Does anyone recognize this? It mentioned musicians by name and I know John Prine was in it and I think Emmy Lou.

Thanks!
