The other comment I got was from a couple who( I think ) are fairly new to folk music. They thought the Saturday PM session in the barn was too ' samey'. I think what they meant was too much unaccompanied singing - not enough jolly tunes.

No, it seemed busy all the time, I was there for the whole weekend, I just had a concertina workshop on the sunday, so i spent some time out and about and looking in at different things, my impression was it was busy.

The comments from my local folk club was that if you just went for the day then Saturday was the better option. Was Sunday PM a bit thin?

You've all done different things and enjoyed the Festival. It was really good to be able to attend the whole weekend. Any previous reservations that I had re the campsite are gone. The toilets were very good, the doors locked, there was adequate paper, and hand cleaner. We arrived before the water did,but that was no big deal either. We had taken exactly enough bottled water for drinking. Even with the deluge of Thursday night's storm, there was no mud (at least at the top where we were.) It's fairly central for the venues too. We made great use of our season tickets, attending several concerts. Mumblin' would have done the music for sessions workshop had he been awake at 10.30 a.m. I requested an afternoon one next year. We gave Indulgence a good ammount of custom. The morning and afternoon sessions were very good . We managed to get a sing in the Caxton on Sunday night. Well done to Synbyn on fitting everyone in, and mostly twice.

Tenterden always was the festival that ended the morris year after its start at Sweeps.
It was especially nice that both the landlord of the Caxton and the Woolpack were keen to host events.
I'm not convinced that you needed ' special guests' in the sing arounds. The ones I heard were OK - but there were many ' non guests' who were equally good.
The highlight for me was playing again with the accordian player who used to play for Bull Nose - one of those crazy inventive accordian players.
We introduced the morris side to the delights of Dorset apple cake.

Shanty session on Saturday afternoon upstairs in the club was very enjoyable. Saturday evening singaround in the barn was also good, but only got to sing one song as we had to leave to get the minibus back to Romford. Getting back north of the river proved a challenge, with Blackwall Tunnel closed and QE2 Bridge also closed. Minibus driver, however, did a great job to keep delays to a minimum, and had to endure our singing all the way home!

Fri and Sat there were three sessions on most of the time - tunage in the White Thingy, and stuff in The Caxton and in the Woolpack. The Caxton Friday lunchtime was excellent and so was the Woolpack Friday evening. Saturday I mostly rested and Sunday I was gone - but I gave some fiends a lift up to the White Thingy and I think they were aiming for tunage again.

Managed to get along for the Singaround in the Barn last night. It was a bit of a trek from Leatherhead, but worth it as there were lots of hugs, friendly faces & some excellent singers. Managed to sing Gordon's song by Bryony McGinty, a wonderful song - bright frost diamonds in the grass.....

Wish we could have come for the weekend but too much to do & so little time. Maybe next year!

Only seems to be synbyn's session at THe William Caxton, but it's quite eclectic... they let us play.That's 11.30 - 2.00. Lots of ticket events in the afternoon. Maybe we could get something else going. If it's going to be wet we need an indoor venue. Though, as Richard points out, the High Street pubs suffer from Morris Dancing in the street.

Having looked at 5 weather forecasts on the internet, the consensus seems to be - Thursday afternoon, bring cedars of Lebanon and round up animals in pairs. Friday damp, but no Niagara. Saturday you MIGHT find Mount Ararat.

Thanks for all comments. I wasn't asking for a booking, just a marquee spot for fun would have been nice . At one time there was a small marquee just inside of the school gate that hosted an open mic. Sadly that seems to have become an official concert. I do have a programme, so know where the singarounds are - thankyou. I noted that there was not one listed for Thursday evening for those of us who don't dance and don't want a concert that isn't included in the weekend ticket.

If I knew in advance of a pub that might like such a thing on Thursday (being an organiser of a folk club) I would be more than happy to host something. We'll be up at the campsite from Thursday. if anyone else is interested please p.m. me.

Two points. A local-ish organiser ought to know of Alan and Linda who have recently released a rather nice CD.

Second, there is a very limited number of pubs in Tenterden (made worse now the 8 Bells has become a chain-restaurant - a sacrilege) namely the Woolpack, the White Horse, the Caxton, and the Vine which is an abomination. Just starting a session is tricky - even if the sun is out the High Street is a non-starter because of the Morris drums.

I was at Whitby festival, a group of us[ The Wilson Family, myself, Colin Cater, and others,I think also Chris Timson and Ann Gregson were dissatisfied with the lack of singarounds, there was only dry one up at the drill hall, so we did something about it,we started a singaround in the Cutty Sark pub, this informal fringe singaround became a great success and carried on for years.to paraphrase Mr Punch," Thats the way to do it"

Girl Friday, my advice is find an empty pub on the thursday night, ask the landlord,contact your friends and start an informal sing, why would Alan Castle mind?

Sorry that you didn't get a reply, Girl Friday, but speaking as the organiser of a festival in the next county, you must realise that festival organisers are inundated with requests for bookings at folk festivals every day, so it is not surprising that some get through without a response.

I try to send a cut'n'paste, standard acknowledgement to all I receive saying something like " wait & see... bring your name to the committee... will only reply if we have a positive response" but then I've had complaints that this is 'too impersonal', so I've found that I can't win.

The sad facts are that I have a pretty good idea of who I want to book, who will draw a crowd and who fits in with the ethos of our festival before I start out each year and the chances of getting a booking by cold calling or email are about 1%.

I emailed Alan Castle to ask for a marquee spot, some months back. Also, the Chief Steward, Kathy Drage said she'd ask if we could cover for Cherrington and Ward who can't come. Neither has born fruit, and my email wasn't even acknowledged, so can't see how asking him is going to work.

The workshop will deal with song accompaniment and also tune playing, i will provide 2 copies of 3 pieces, one song and 2 tunes, i will also briefly talk about bellows use, if people wish to bring music stands, that is fine by me.

Accuweather has changed its mind significantly for the worse.

Metcheck now showing soggy-ish with the exception of Saturday dry from 6 am to 6 pm.

That's all right Dick, I go home on the Sunday! Accuweather is predicting dry and bright (but not hot) Thurs and Sat, but some damp on Fri. You need to pray harder. I shall take more internal antifreeze and waterproofing. Everybody knows that water and alcohol don't mix.

I can't decide whether to take either twin-neck, or just a 6. Carting a 12 and a 6 and the mandolin and the bodhran is a bit of a mission and if I add the songbooks it's a bit more of a mission.

ABOUT TENTERDEN FOLK FESTIVAL

Tenterden Folk Festival takes place over four days with folk song, music and dance.
Tenterden, situated in the ancient Weald of Kent, about 12 miles west of Ashford, is an ideal setting for this friendly, family folk festival. It features one of the widest High Streets in the country lined with historic and listed buildings, numerous friendly pubs, cafes and restaurants and green verges.

Events:
Events at the festival include an English Barn Dance, concerts, sing-a-rounds, music sessions, folk clubs, special shows, a craft fair and street stalls, music stalls, dance displays, procession, showcases, meet the guest spots, workshops, dancers and musicians on the K&ES Railway, events for children and much more besides.

Venues and public houses:
Festival venues include The Evans Bar and Moulton Hall upstairs in the Tenterden Club, St Mildred's Parish Church, St Mildred's Church Hall, The Town Hall, The Recreation Ground and the High Street, There will also be events in the bars of The Woolpack, The White Lion, The Vine and The William Caxton plus The Wine Kitchen and Indulgence Cafe.

Welcome barn dance:
The English barn dance is a regular feature of the festival and is always very popular. As well as the barn dance there is often a chance to try other forms of traditional folk dancing.   

Concerts:
The main concerts on Saturday and Sunday will be held in the Tenterden Club with smaller acoustic concerts, including concerts on Friday, being held in the Saddlery at The White Lion. There will be a special fundraising concert on Thursday in the Town Hall.

Sing-a-rounds and music sessions:
One of the highlights of Tenterden Folk Festival for many of the participants are the numerous friendly and informal sing-a-rounds and music sessions. With a choice of four town centre pubs there is sure to be a sing-a-round or session that suits your taste going on in at least one of these venues.

Workshops and meet the guest sessions:
TFF is a charity formed to preserve and advance public education and appreciation of folk music, song and dance as part of the living heritage. Therefore we offer you a chance to "Meet" some of the guests in informal sessions. We also offer workshops where you can hear about folk related topics or improve your own skills.

Dance displays:
Tenterden is "the Jewel of the Weald" and over the Festival weekend it has even more colour and sparkle than usual as hundreds of Morris men and women and other folk dancers take to the streets of the town centre. The majority of teams are Morris dance sides of varying styles, from the Cotswold tradition and Black-faced Border style, to clog to garland dancers. The teams you will see will be both men's, women's and mixed sides and come from all over England. It's not just Morris you will see as Tenterden is regularly host to teams performing traditional dances from Scotland, Ireland, England, Slovakia and the Appalachian Mountains of North America. There is also Saturday's popular procession along the High Street.

Crafts fair, music stalls, other stalls and also street stalls:
The craft fair and other stalls will be in a large marquee on The Recreation Ground, just off the High Street. The marquee will act as the venue for the popular music showcases and dance stages. There will still be street stalls in the High Street.
