well Joe, they certainly seemed puzzled by the 'Lambton Worm'- maybe it was my South Shields accent!

Great place to be though & to meet Faith- does it continue (up to Covid, anyway?)

Hi, Jim and Francie -

Faith would be 105 years old this year. I thought she would live forever. Nothing seemed to stop her until she broke her hip at our annual New Year's camp on January 1, 2012. For years, she hosted a singaround twice a month at her home on Clayton Street in San Francisco. I think most of the people at those singarounds would be at least somewhat familiar with Lambton Worm, although I guess I'd have to admit I don't know many San Francisco folks who sing it.
Cheers!

Not being very up to date on folk music, I had no idea Faith had passed away until this thread popped up again.
We met her at her club in Haight Ashbury in 2001, weeks after 9/11. The club was unlike any I've been to, before or since.

The informal 'club' was on the left as you came in the front door, turn right and soup & food was available to all comers, whether club visitors or not- we had been appalled by the poverty we found in one of the richest cities in the US and there were many of the city's homeless there that night, with Faith serving from the soup tureen.
Faith made us very welcome but the whole nation was in a very sensitive mood & reflected in the songs from the club singers- many patriotic, but also with Halloween approaching, an official mystical theme.
Not my strongpoint, but I racked my brains & did the Lambton Worm (for US readers this is an ancient, dialect- strong legend from North East England).
It was a bit obscure for the audience & wasn't an ideal choice, and its end was greeted by seconds of stunned silence. Followed by applause but I'll always treasure the cry of a squatting, pigtailed hippie, 'Cool, man...'
wonderful & for me, pure SF!
RIP Faith, you had the right idea & glad to have met you.

Faith is someone I looked up to a lot--although she did have a straight forward and tuneful voice, she was a singer for whom having a "pretty voice" was simply irrelevant. She had a contagious aesthetic that rested on putting a song forth a clearly and truthfully and lyrically as possible.

Faith was a serious asthmatic and got in touch with me in the mid-eighties when she heard I had become an out-of-control asthmatic. We talked a lot about our fears of not being able to sing. She had those worries too, but she realized being a folk singer was about the song, not the singer. That cheered her up and kept her amazingly productive for years.... but, more than admiration, I have gratitude.

Faith went out of her way to mentor me back into singing again and gave me more advice about getting my asthma back in control than a whole passel of doctors. We were not close friends when this mentoring began-- I was just another woman singing on the road. I felt very close to her, though, as time went on, I was so touched by her kindness and her determination to reach out, again and again.

She came to our folk club in Lewes, East Sussex, Englan as guest way - way way back - early 1970s? She was with a bunch of others. Then I asked them to come to our BBC Radio Sussex station to record songs for our folk music programme. One (Denis?) was an expert of native American music and sent me some tapes. For some reason my main memory is of a trio of the six or so that were there singing a lovely harmony version of "Home In Pasadena" and calling themselves the California Humming Birds. We had a number of requests from listeners for that track to be repeated, so we did play it several times,

Here's a YouTube video of Faith singing "Geritol Gypsy" at a radio station in Sydney in April, 2001:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PAbnDRkK_4

I met Faith in about 1995, when I took a date to a house concert in Davis, California. We didn't know anybody there, and we didn't know anything about Faith. It was the first or second time I had ever been to a house concert. We got there early and had seats in the front row, and Faith sat down next to us and chatted with us until the concert began. That was delightful, and so was the concert. She treated every song like a treasure she wanted to share with us. I got to know her later through the San Francisco Folk Music Club, and I learned a lot from her over the years.

She did live a marvelous life. We have been privileged to be her friend for the last 35 years during which time she was the matriarch of the San Francisco Folk Music Club. She also stood for many progressive causes including marching during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

She knew the lyrics to more folk songs than anyone we know and, when she gets to heaven, the angels better not make any mistakes when singing the songs or she will quietly take them aside and gently correct them.

She lived what I would imagine was a marvelous life. When I think of her, I think of intelligence and helpfulness, and I believe she really knew how to laugh.

Richard Adrianowicz would bring Faith to some of the SF chantey sings. Faith would sing "Sammy's Bar" and other nautical songs. We'll have a moment of silence, and then a whole lot of singing in her honor at the next one.

I missed her earlier years at the SF Folk Club, first hearing her sing as a regular floor singer at Dick Holdstock and Allan Macleod's Castle Folk Club in the late 1980's and early 90's. At Camp Harmony she wrote a satirical song about eating thanksgiving turkey....can't remember the lyrics, but we loved her singing it at the camp ceili night.

Rest in peace.

My favorite Faith Petric song is "It's a Pleasure to Know You." It was, indeed, a pleasure to know you, Faith. May you rest in peace.
-Joe Offer-

IT'S A PLEASURE TO KNOW YOU
(Karl Williams)

It's a pleasure to know you
And the comfort you bring...

I came to your city after I left my home
And I was a stranger dressed up in stranger's clothes
Favors I needed but charity's out of style
And rare as the beauty in the face of a trusting child

Chorus: And it's a pleasure to know you
A pleasure to see you smile
A comfort to know
We'll share the road awhile
Pleasure is fleeting
Comforts are far between
It's a pleasure to know you
And the comfort you bring

They say life's a journey a highway from birth to death
Mapped in despair and traveled in hopelessness
Well they may believe it but just between you and me
The trick to the traveling is all in the company

Chorus

Lovers may leave you lovers may turn away
And children may scorn you you know they will someday
The seasons are fickle and fate is not known as kind
But friendship's a diamond and trouble's the diamond mine

Chorus

I met Faith about 20 years ago in Alaska -- She performed in a couple of different venues and two songs stand out in my mind - The first was in a public school or library, where she sang Nancy Shimmel's "1492" --- "In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. It was a courageous thing to do, but someone was already there."

The other was in a popular bar, frequented by locals and tourists alike. On this particular evening, the place was packed, and seated at tables right up front near the stage, were several rough looking, rowdy guys, who were obviously having a good time. She commanded their attention by singing the Berryman's "Chat With Your Mother." During the refrain, she looked right at them, stopped playing, and pointed her finger toward them when she sang, "It's from them I would expect to hear the "F-word" not from YOU!" Everyone loved this 78ish folk singer who was delightfully bold, had a ready laugh and a whole lifetime's worth of folk music to share with those who would listen. Faith Petric-- What a treasure!

In her report to the San Francisco Folk Music club's discussion forum yesterday, Carole said that this is a time for quiet for Faith, so visitors should check with Carole and find out if it's appropriate to visit. My mother-in-law was born in the same year, 1915, and died this year in June. There is indeed a time and a need for quiet at this point.
I'm glad I've had the chance to know Faith over these last 20 years or so. I don't think she liked me at first, but we got to the point where we enjoyed each other very much. I last saw her January 1, 2012 - the day she broke her hip at San Francisco's Camp New Harmony.
Bless her.

I have never heard/seen Faith Petric in person. The last time I knew she was performing in RI (with two other women, both of whom I had previously seen and enjoyed), I got into my car which almost immediately broke down. I knew at the time that I would probably never get to hear her. It was a disappointing night for me. The only good thing was that I was close to home when my car died and I was able to nudge it back to my condo, but I could never have made it to the concert venue and back.

When I lived near San Francisco in the late 1970's, Faith was the
center of the folk community and San Francisco Folk Music Club.
Her magnificent home was the meeting place.

She was a delightful performer - recorded a bunch of LPs & CD's
and is included in a number of multi-performer collections.

Anyone know which albums are in print? Camsco or Down Home ????

Carole's blog - see August 9 post Carole reports she is doing well in the hospice - I ring my mother. "How are you," I ask. "Fine. I'm in the right place, but I'm not dying."

I met Faith on her last (that I know of!) tour of Australia when she was 83. I saw her at my local folk club & a nearby festival & have often quoted what she said to those of us buying her CDs - it (the CD) won't work unless the artist signs it, so I've always tried to get signatures on any CDs I buy.

It's twenty years ago since I met her and I thought even then what an inspirational person she was, EverythingI've heard about her since then has just confirmed that she continued to keep the folk flame burning in California. Sorry to hear of her illness. I send my best wishes to a remarkable, unforgettable woman. Roy Harris.

Legendary folksinger Faith Petric, of San Francisco, is 98 years old today! Sadly, I've heard she is not well, and in hospice care. Read her daughter Carole's blog at astrangeanddistantpeople.wordpress.com Fascinating! (Sorry I couldn't do a blue clicky. [I did. -Joe-])
