ABBEYLEIX was recorded by The Dublin City Ramblers on their album "Flight of Earls," 2002. That's all the information I was able to find.

"The Abbey Leix, which Declan learned from Cork fiddle player, Carol Leader, is one of over 250 tunes composed by the late Sean Ryan (fiddler) from Nenagh, Co Tipperary and features in a book of his works titled, 'The Hidden Ireland' and published by Brian Ryan. Brian Mc Neil is the composer of the second tune and Declan heard it first played by Sligo multi-instrumentalist, Seamus O Dowd. The last tune of this set is a composition of Paul StewartCranford a fiddle player from Toronto, Canada and Declan learned this one from fiddle player, Geraldine Clancy from Miltown Malbay, Co Clare."

Is that the song being requested? If so, it has clear lyrics for those people who like transcription.

It's hard to say, 999. The OP didn't say a word back in 1997. Was s/he looking for the jaunty dance tune by Sean Ryan or the sweet song which you found on YouTube? We shall probably never know.

Nonetheless, thanks to George for posting the abc and to you for posting the link.

Lyrics:

ABBEYLEIX

Abbeyleix
I hear you calling
In my dreams
I hear you say
Come back home
To dear old Erin
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day

Twenty years ago today,
Since first I sailed away
And left my dear old home so far behind
But since that lonely journey
My heart is always yearning
My happy home, at least in Leix (JRO) once more to find

Abbeyleix, I hear you calling
In my dreams, I hear you say
Come back home to dear old Erin
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day

I still have pleasant mem'ries
Of that old river your
I fished along your banks each summer day
Those memories I still cherish
From distant days I yearn
Those days of youth, when I was young and fit

Abbeyleix, I hear you calling
In my dreams, I hear you say
Come back home to dear old Erin
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day

The lovely trees and woodland
Around that little town
Have beauties just as rare as you will find
To see those scenes of childhood
Once more I will return
And meet those folks so friendly and so kind

Abbeyleix, I hear you calling
In my dreams, I hear you say
Come back home to dear old Erin
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day

CND, it's very important for you to document your source for these lyrics. Did you find it in a book, transcribe it from a recording - which book, which recording? Did you find it on a Website?

Who's the songwriter?

Is there any background information?

Thanks.

ABBEYLEIX
(Christy Cullen)

CHORUS
Abbeyleix, I hear you calling
In my dreams I hear you say
Come back home To dear old Erin
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day

Twenty years ago today,
Since first I sailed away
And left my dear old home so far behind
But since that lonely journey
My heart has always yearned
My happy home in Laois once more to find

CHORUS

I still have pleasant memories
Of (up?) that old river Nore
I fished along your banks each summer day
Those memories I still cherish
From distant days of yore
The days of youth, when I was young and gay

CHORUS

The lovely trees and woodlands
Around the little town
Have beauty just as rare as you will find
To see those scenes of childhood
Once more I will return
And meet those folks so friendly and so kind

CHORUS
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day
Abbeyleix, I'll come back to you some day

My transcription from the Flight of Earls album by the Dublin City Ramblers. -Joe-

The Dublin City Ramblers pronounce the town "Abbey Leeks"

Wikipedia says Abbeyleix, meaning "Laois Abbey," is a town on the River Nore in County Laois (pronounced "Leesh") in Midlands, the part of Ireland we tourists never see...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWgiGllLvuA - recording by Abbeyfolk, attributed to Christy Cullen
Great photos of the town on the video.

Oh, this is interesting:

LOVELY LAOIS
(Christy Cullen)

CHORUS
Lovely Laois, I hear you calling
In my dreams I hear you say
Come back home to dear old Ireland
Lovely Laois, I’ll come back to you some day

Twenty years ago today since I first sailed away
And left my dear old home so far behind
But since that lonely journey, my heart has always yearned
My happy home in Laois, once more to find
CHORUS

I still have pleasant memories of that old river Nore
I fished along your banks each summer day
Those memories, I still cherish from distant days of yore
The days of youth when I was young and gay
CHORUS

The view from the Sliabh Bloom, dreams I can still see
A beauty just as grand as you will find
These are scenes from childhood, once more I will return
And meet those folk, those friends we had so fine
CHORUS

Take a look at this: http://www.irishtimes.com/news/co-laois-is-tops-in-denmark-1.128361

Co Laois is tops in Denmark
Irish Times, 20 Nov 1997

Voted third in Denmark's popular music charts this week was Lovely Laois, sung by a 25-year-old Mountrath country and western singer, Trudi Lalor. The song features on her album Next Time Round.
"We released the album some time ago and I have performed a few times in Denmark," she says, "but I must say I was quite surprised when I discovered that the song had gone to number three in their music charts.
"I like the Danes because they are very like ourselves. They enjoy the music, the pint and the craic and they seemed to like my singing. Not only is the album selling well in Denmark but it is also doing very well in Germany and Poland."
Trudi says that up to two years ago there was no song at all about Co Laois and, in order to rectify this, a local man, Christy Cullen, wrote the song. "I recorded it for a GAA album which features a song about every county in Ireland and then I put it on the Next Time Round album, which was distributed all over Europe.
Trudi, who comes from a family of 11, has a growing reputation as a country and western singer and has recorded with Ray Lynam in Nashville.

Thanks for the information and the links, Joe. Laois is the kind of place I like to visit. It seems peaceful, and there's likely to be good birdwatching.
