Christian.

Obama's father and his stepfather were Muslim, but while living in Indonesia with his mother and stepfather, he went to a Catholic school. His mother (American citizen, born in Kansas) was a strong Christian (non-Catholic).

Barack Obama identifies himself as a Christian and attends a Christian church.

There is no evidence, other than unsubstantiated conspiracy theories, to contradict his Christian religious identification and church attendance.

Don Firth

P. S. When John F. Kennedy, a Catholic, was running for and subsequently elected to the Presidency, there were some-non-Catholics who had a wall-eyed fit and claimed that the United States would now be ruled from the Vatican by the Pope.

Considering the number of Muslims--good, peaceful citizens--living in and loyal to the United States--exactly what difference would it make if Barack Obama actually were a Muslim?

Except to a bigot?

In brief, why give a shit?

So this document has been debunked? Just asking. I don't care what his religion is, but him lying about it is a different matter. I guess I should have been more clear about that at the start. The question is, does Obama lie about his religion?

I remember my Aunt Margie telling my dad in 1960 (I was only 6 years old, it amazes me I remember this) how the Catholics were storing guns in their church basements, purchased with bingo profits, so they could overthrow the government if JFK didn't make it. Seriously.

I don't read enough Bahasa Indonesia to be sure what that "document" is saying ("Agama" does mean religion), but it appears to be dated 1968, when Obama was 6 years old, so I very much doubt it was filled out by Obama. Much more likely, it was filled out by his stepfather. Who was Muslim and doubtless hoped his stepson would be too. It's not in need of "debunking".

Thank you, Harou, for clarifying the document Songwronger posted. I found it unreadable.

When a parent indicates what religion he hopes his children will embrace when they grow to maturity, there is no guarantee that their wishes will come about. It frequently does not.

There is no evidence that Barack Obama lied about his religion.

Sorry, Songwronger. It doesn't wash.

ABC News, which I trust more than FoxNews, says that Obama regularly attended the United Church of Christ (successor to the Congregationalists and Pilgrims) until he was elected president. Since then, he has attended services at various churches, but not every Sunday.
Sorry, Songwronger - no evidence that he has attended Muslim services as an adult.

I do not think his is lying about what his religion is. But I'd be interested in why 'lying about it [would be] a different matter'. I remember reading that there have been quite a few presidents whose religious affiliations did not extend beyond PR, which is lying about it in my book. It is also odd, from a European perspective, to see that a significant number of US citizens are more concerned about apparent religious affiliation of their presidents than they are about, for example, susceptibility to vested interests [No, Songwronger, I do not mean Obama by that, I mean ALL of them].

If I were to rank all possible lies and deceptions that a President might make starting with the most serious, I guess religious affiliation would be round about 20,000th on the list.

I suppose being President of a country where religion is seen as important in secular affairs, his faith is something he has to walk a tightrope with the same as any other divisive issue.

It says more of the idiots who would be concerned than the politicians pandering for their votes.

Here, the deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg tells of the day after he helped form the government after the last election, his advisors told him he must be seen to go to church. His reaction was to mention this in an interview where he also said he had no interest in religion. Reaction here? It turns out to be just about the only thing the polls say he is respected for. David Cameron on the other hand started going to church once he got the keys to No.10. I would too despite being irreligious because to get to the top in politics you need to have a hand of aces and if you don't believe in it, it doesn't attract thunderbolts to say that you do. As most politicians both sides of the pond would privately agree.

Eisenhower was a Jehovah's Witness but became a Presbyterian to get elected.

What religion are the Koch brothers? They're way more powerful than Obama so the answer matters more, particularly since they use religion as a political tool.

I'm uninterested in what religion any politician is, unless their faith and divinely inspired bullshit drives them to undertake holy crusades.

As for lying, yes, deliberately lying - as in making intentionally false statements - to the public (rather than keeping personal information private) means that person is not worthy of the degree of public trust that political office demands and shouldn't be in that job.

Is Obama a Christian or does he worship Odin? Well he attends a Christian church so I guess in practice it seems so, but otherwise I don't care.

Bottom line is you people don't know anything about Obama's religion, and so you say it's not an issue.

I suppose we shouldn't pay any attention to Songywrongy. I mean, it has to be absurd to attempt to make an issue about Barack Obama's religious persuasion in 1968, when he was six or seven years old. The trouble is, there are so many people in this world reciting such tripe over and over again, and they seem to have some success making political hay out of such absurdities.

Songwronger, as Joe said, Obama was just a kid. Some kids still believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny at that age. And what his parents--or A parent--register him in school may have little to do with his religious beliefs--if any--a few years later when the youngster develops some ideas of his own.

I know a woman who became a Buddhist when she was in her fifties. And I know lots of people who did not follow the religion their parents embraced.

You're looking pretty silly here.

Ancient Rome was a lot more honest about this. Instead of going on the public-speaker circuit, a retired Emperor became a god. It was considered perfectly normal to spend your career worshipping at the Temple of Me.

He murders innocents. So how does he justify his murders?

I, too, have a high batting average when reading a BS thread title that seems to have "Songwronger" all over it... question- has the guy EVER posted to a musical theme??? Or is this really just a one note wonder?

OK, back on track or at least close... After completing kindergarden in public school, my mom decided that she wasn't all that thrilled with the public school system in our area. So off we went to the local Catholic school & that's where I spent the next 8 years. The kid who thought the statue of the Christ child was a girl, thought we were going to see the movie Ten Commandments about a guy named Noses, and was taught the Lord's Prayer & Hail Mary by my mom in the car after she finished getting me enrolled. And finished my eighth year as an agnostic because it took another year before I realized that I really didn't believe in any of it, making me an atheist.

So was I ever actually a Catholic, in spite of having been baptized, being forced to go to church, take communion and finally confirmation? I tried, but knew it was really hypocritcal to say I could actually believe even half of that stuff. At least I never felt any desire to run for public office.

The president married a woman who is Christian and I believe that he embraced her religion because it espoused many beliefs that he shared. Not the bible spouting BS but the sentiments behind the Sermon on the Mount and the Good Samaritan... you know the stuff that was preached by that guy called Jesus Christ.

Our founding fathers made separation of church and state a critical mandate when forming this country. We have no state religion and therefore there should be no need for these assinine witchhunts. But then there will always be the a-holes out there that just love to hate... looking to send us back into the dark ages.

yeah... since I was bored to tears most of the time, I'd spend most of my time daydreaming...    so when I finally "woke up", it sounded like she was saying Noses.... then she went into the story & it still sounded like she was saying Noses... I had this mental picture of a guy in robe with a snoze like Jimmy Durante going from hilltop to hilltop chasing after sheep. WAS NOT prepared to see Charleton Heston up on the screen. LOL... hey, I was all of 7 or 8 and didn't know squat about the Old Testament... or even the New for that matter.

Kinda goes to the point of it don't mean beans what a parent puts on some paperwork. They're just making a paper pusher happy.

It must say something for Obama that the naysayers have to hitch on to something as inconsequential as his religion. They shake their little sticks and get all upset when disagreed with.

To my way of thinking, the Obamas are more Christian in their daily lives than a lot of those who wear the label.

If we're going to talk about murdering innocents let's look at Bush's record before even thinking about Obama's. The shrub got us involved in two wars that not only left children dead but also left ruined countries and one hell of a financial deficit, which this president is still trying to deal with.

Doesn't the separation of church and state make it all a non-issue anyway? Can the man govern, and if he can or can't, what's it got to do with religion as long as he's being fair?

I'm admittedly foggy on the separation idea as I'm not American, but wouldn't Thomas Jefferson be alarmed at the current state of the states?

Peace, Mooh.

Mooh...

not just Thomas Jefferson, but all the rest of the founding fathers who understood that they needed to work together - and yes, make compromises. One such compromise was to avoid the issue of slavery, hoping that time would come up with a natural solution.

America came into being in what has been called the Age of Enlightenment. We have now entered the Age of Delusion and Willful Ignorance. And there are those bound & determined to destroy democracy & meritocracy & replace it with their own form of "aristocracy", ie. the 1%ers.

Eliza, there's a city named "Bellingham" about 90 miles north of Seattle where I live.

When a local Sunday School teacher, leading up to Christmas, asked her class, "When Jesus was born in the stable, who came to present gifts to the new-born Christ child?"

One youngster answered, "I know! The three wise guys from Bellingham!"

I disagree that this issue is irrelevant because it is being used as a dirt-slinging weapon against Obama by GOP fundamentalists. Remember the ignorant woman at the McCain campaign who proclaimed, "He's an A-rab" prompting McCain to say "No, maam."
Where did she get that crap?

People who bring up this issue have a political axe to grind insisting that Obama is not an American citizen....in short it's a "birther" issue.

The question is not valid since Obama has shown that he is a Christian and that he attends Christian services, formerly one through Reverend Wright who was vilified when what he was intending to say is that America's foreign policy leaves something to be desired and perhaps had a criticism of the persecution of black people in America. Obama threw him under the "proverbial bus" and distanced himself from Wright's outburst to placate the Reactionary Right.

Anyone who questions Obama's religion has a right to do so but the over preponderance of evidence in Obama's own words and church attendance is that he is unquestionably a Christian and not a Muslim as this thread question implies.

Obama is not a non-believer because he uses "god bless America" at the end of every speech. I think even Irving Berlin, if he were around, might throw up.

And of course you don't need to be born on the territory of the USA to be a natural born citizen, so the "birther" thing is completely irrelevant even if everything they say was true.

World Net Daily (WND) and Newsmax are two of the e-mail letters that manifest themselves in my e-mail box every morning. Unsolicited! I think they came as a result of my signing some on-line petitions for causes I favor, but have nothing to do with those causes. I think that the simple fact that I signed a petition for any cause was enough to get me on their lists.

I haven't put them on my spam list because I want to see what sort of thing these people are coming off with. A lot of it actually tends to show up in threads that Songwronger starts, strangely enough (!?).

These two e-mail "bulletins" publish absolutely outrageous stuff, mainly about Obama, and now that there is a possibility that Hilary may run for President in the next election, they're starting to slander her right, left, and center, accusing her of all kinds of atrocities, crimes against humanity, and general perversions.

They've already gone through the litany of slanders about Obama (Muslim, born in Kenya, gay, kills for pleasure with drones, etc., all of which they repeat ad nausem), and now they're starting to attack Hilary.

All extreme Right Wing, Tea Party stuff.

It's all pretty vicious and libelous, and it's especially so now, but it seems to be standard political maneuvering when certain factions are feeling particularly nasty. I am sufficiently endowed with years that I can recall the kind of things that were said about Franklin D. Roosevelt during his campaigns and his terms in office. I was quite young then, but I recall my father being all for Roosevelt. Although wealthy himself, Roosevelt was deeply concerned about the country as a whole and especially the poor and unemployed during the Great Depression, which he inherited from a series of Republican administrations. Hence his "alphabet agencies" such as the WPA and the CCC to put people back to work, and the SEC to oversee and curb the excesses of Wall Street and the banking establishment, plus many others.

The slanders about Roosevelt flew thick and fast. The same mentality as the Tea Party types—and people like Songwronger—insisted that FDR was a Socialist, a Communist, that he was Jewish and his name was actually "Rosenfeld," to cover the "fact" that he was part of the "International Jewish Conspiracy" (which I think Hitler also bought into, hence the Holocast), or a bit fuzzier around the edges, that he was a member of "the Illuminati" world conspiracy. . . and all of that general dingbattery.

And as I mentioned above, the craziness about how, if John F. Kennedy, a Catholic, was elected, the United States would be ruled from the Vatican, complete with all the religious strictures and requirements becoming law for all American citizens, no matter what their religious preference, it any, with dark hints about the reinstitution of the Inquisition.

Unfortunately, there is a great horde of people running loose out there who are in dire need of a vigorous dope slap!!

Still flogging this dog? I just asked about the religion thing wondering what Obama's position is on it now. I don't follow much of what he says any more, after his years of lying. I read a piece somewhere called The Califake and that made me wonder, that's all.

I voted for him hoping he would deliver some change, but it quickly became obvious he would merely be giving us more of the Bush crap. Hidden behind the "other" party label and a different skin color. Same lies, same banks, same agenda. I like the comparison of Obama to Nixon, whom he most resembles in his lying actions. At least Nixon had the dignity to resign when he got caught. Obama seems to be shameless.

But--

There is the Presidency and there is Congress.

Practically everything that Obama has been trying to accomplish is being blocked by a Republican Congress that is hell-bent on seeing to it that he fails.

Obama lying? That's a fiction you--and a batch of Right Wing conspiracy theorists--have pulled out of thin air, apparently not having a clue as to how the U. S. Government is supposed to work.

"Raising the debt ceiling, which has been done over a hundred times, does not increase our debt."

That was Obama last week. So is he a moron or a liar? Those are really the only two choices there.

Here's a list of Obama's lies from a website that does nothing but track his lies. Obamalies.net. And there are lots and lots more lies out there. Just search "Obama lies list." His whole presidency has been a lie.

But back to religion.

Murder at the mall in Nairobi. And Obama's cousin Odinga is involved. This is the man who used religious hatred to foment genocide and muscle his way into a power sharing arrangement not long ago. Made a pact with terrorists, vowed to institute Muslim law in Kenya, etc. When he lost the election he encouraged his followers to riot and murder Christians, and Obama never picked up the phone to ask him to stop. So once again you have to wonder about Obama's religion. He loves his nosecone camera footage of drone bombs dropping in for the kill, so I wonder if he's watching video of Christians being shot in the head at the mall right now. Has he condemned the carnage or whatever yet? Did he put a drop of glycerine on his cheek before he did?

This is a diatribe against Obama, which should be obvious by now. Whether Obama had a cousin in Nairobi or not does not incriminate him in any way with guilt by association.

As we speak, we don't know the entire details of this even in the Mall. We don't know who is being held hostage and who comprises the membership of Al Shabab.

I'm not happy with Obama's policy of drone warfare, keep Gitmo open, persecuting whistleblowers and reneging on election promises but the idea that he is a Muslim terrorist is just too laughable to be believed.

Actually, he is really a worshipper of the Sun God Ra or is an alien from a distant planet.
Everyone knows he is the devil incarnate and hides his horns and hooves during the day.

It's not money that is the root of all evil, it is the love of money.

Money is a convenient medium of exchange. This makes it possible for you to buy that Martin D-28 that you've been drooling over without having to lug a crate-full of chickens, two bushel baskets full of cherries, lead a breeding sow, and a promise to mow the lawn for a year to the music store. You just write out a check which the music store proprietor deposits in the store's bank account, and you walk out with the guitar.

The dollar is a good thing.

But when one becomes obsessed with the acquisition of money that one is willing to cheat, steal, and bilk other people out of their earnings, that IS evil.

I don't think President Obama belongs to the Church of WOTAD. Indeed, many of his policies have been aimed at trying to spread the wealth out a bit, distributing it more evenly, especially to those who don't have much—if any.

I heard a really disturbing statistic a couple of days ago. Some 400 people possess 50% of the wealth of this country!

When some CEO screws up and loses his company a wad of money, then finagles a government bail-out—and receives a $10 million dollar bonus from the company's Board of Directors (all of whom are receiving seven figure annual salaries), I can't help but think of the young woman who lives in her car along with her two small children. She parks it in the Central Lutheran Church parking lot (they sleep in the car), and while she is working in the nearby Kentucky Fried Chicken, the church's secretary baby sits the kids and makes sure they get a good, hearty lunch.

Something is rotten in the state of—the United States!

Many of President Obama's policy efforts are aimed at distributing the wealth a bit more equitably. And for this, he gets

Congress.

And people like Songwronger.

News flash!! Ayn Rand's world is right here, folks! The way she looked at it, the CEO who screwed up, but wheedled a government bail-out, is one of the Creators. The Atlas upon whose shoulders the world rests.

And that woman with the two children who lost her husband and her home and must sleep in her car because the best she can manage is a part-time job in a fast-food establishment—for minimum wage—is a free-loader! A parasite.

Among other things, Obama is striving to see that people can get decent health care when they need it, and even at this, Congress and the Right Wing are stonewalling him!

To the worshippers in the Church of WOTAD--Hell isn't hot enough!!

Don Firth

P. S. And if that makes me a "loony Liberal," then so be it!

First, I would have to get this same report from several different sources, not just a blog that gets its information from a paper like the Washington Examiner.

The Washington Examiner is one of a string of Right Wing newspapers owned by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz.   He is both a Christian Conservative and a conservative Christian. Among other things, he is a heavy contributor to the Discover Instituted, which pushes the idea of Creationism.   And he contributed heavily to the George W. Bush presidential campaign.

Hardly an unbiased source!!

Precisely, utter nonsense like calling Obama a Marxist or obsessing over his birth cert. or his possible religion, do huge damage to the credibility of genuine and legitimate complaints against / criticisms of the POLICIES of the current US administration.

The NSA scandal should be huge, HUGE, but it gets conveniently pushed under a rug because it's been made so easy to lump all those who are legitimately concerned in with the tinfoil hat merchants.
