Not to worry, Linn. You do a great job of keeping track of who is singing what.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sorry, Charlie. Slip of the fingers, since I know full well it's "Outside Track" (lousy proofreading on this end; sigh).

I'd forgotten some of the songs I led.

"Outward Track," however, was not one I led; should be "Outside Track."

I posted a set of photos for this session on the Press Room Facebook Forum, if anyone wants to see what was going on: Click here for photos!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Almost forgot to mention the "excitement" of the afternoon. Evidently there was some sort of scavenger hunt going on around town and The Press Room was one of the stops, so various crowds of costumed people would loudly gather in the doorway every so often. We all wished the ones with the creative hats had come further in so we could admire the hats. There was also a group of women in white dresses and pink parasols.

Maeve, I believe Sara had changed what she sang to reflect Smith's words. I was listening to Craig, Morgan & Robson in my car the day before she died. The song is on that CD I have.

Jeri, thanks for the link to Sarah's notes on "Home, Lads, Home". I miss her voice and grace. She would be delighted you sing the song, alterations and all.

Right, Jeff came in late in the session and I DID write him down, but my attendance notes are cramped and, well, I usually don't have my reading glasses on when I'm scribbling late comers... (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.)

To continue...

17. Deepwaterman - Ernie Pigeon (I think that may be the title,
or The Voyage Is Finished At Last)

Its Home, Lads, Home/Homeward. I changed it. I managed to only get one stanza and the chorus. I used to know the whole thing, but that was some years ago. The song's in the DT from Sara Morgan, with notes: Home, Lads, Home. While it's known (because of the original setting by Sara to a poem in a magazine whose origins were at that time unknown) as "Overseas in India", C Fox Smith's original "Flanders" makes more sense.

Okay, here goes...

The crew included Tom (Curmudgeon), me (Linn Schulz), Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Dianne Lavoie, Don Hale, Ernie Pigeon (NbptErnie), Amy DeSilva, Steve Willard and his wife, and another Cape Ann couple whose names I don't know, Tami Bill (Ranger1), Jeri, Carol Coronis (for a bit before heading to a gig), Susan Young, Alan Eaton, Jeffrey Huntsman (old friend of Charlie's; from Indiana), Mike Dibble (from Somerset, England, visiting his daughter in Portsmouth), John Forti, Ellen and Dave Hamil, Barbara Benn… And then Steve Smith arrived…direct from Portsmouth Reg. Hospital where he's been since Thursday afternoon. I mean, he came right to the session without going home…from the HOSPITAL! (Okay, that says something for the healing powers of music, I think.) And Justine came in, too, to sing a few songs.

1. Alabama John Cherokee – Ernie Pigeon
2. Fire Marengo – Charlie Ipcar
3. Home, Dearie, Home – Linn Schulz
4. Sair Fyeld Hinny – Dianne Lavoie (for Lou Killen)
5. Gals Around Cape Horn – Don Hale
6. Home, Lads, Home (Homeward; C. Fox Smith) – Jeri
7. Jolly Bargemen – Charlie Ipcar
8. Whitby Maid – Carol Coronis
9. Nellie J. Banks – Ernie Pigeon
10. Who Will Feed the People? (Tom Paxton) – Steve Willard
11. General Taylor – Alan Eaton
12. John Dead – Jeri
13. Congo River – Dianne Lavoie
14. Greenland Whale Fisheries – Don Hale
15. Maggie May – Linn Schulz
16. Across the Western Ocean – Susan Young

More tomorrow, probably after we get home from Tom's doctor appointment.

I'll be there, my intern learned the nature program for that day so that both the boss and I can be off doing other things. She's an awesome intern!

Sorry to be so late in posting -- it's been a hectic week.

Our monthly shanty, forebitter and ballad session will be this Saturday, September 21st, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM at the Press Room in Portsmouth, NH.

Anyway, this will be a great opportunity to warm up for the 14th annual Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival which will be the last weekend of the month, September 28th & 29th. More info here including the schedule for this year's festival --
PMFF

Hope to see you there!

Linn
