It's not that you're not a handsome old devil, Joe. I saw your picture on Facebook. Mudcat was on the blink and I went scouting around for info on the situation. Nice to put a name to a face. Like your hat :-)

That's ok Joe, I'm sure you do know a lot more about all of this stuff than I do. I'd probably have more fun hanging out with punkfolkrocker though :-)

The Hollies were good but a bit too 'pop-ish' for my tastes at the time. I enjoyed the novelty value in some of their songs all the same. Had a listen to some Small Faces stuff last night and I think The Universal is one of the best.

Enjoy

And when I see God Save the Queen, I figure that I'm supposed to do my job and group this thread with all the other threads on the song titled "God Save the Queen," since it's probably a link to a recording of the song.

Or else I have to take the time to listen to the recording on the unidentified link.God Save the Queen threads (click).

But I think I was a little hard on you, Suzy. Sorry about that.

Oh - BTW - The Small Faces were probably my favourite band at the time. Still have a few of their albums. Along with Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jethro Tull, John Mayalls Bluesbreakers, The Who and Jimi Hendrix. But I do not live in the past and listen as much to Starsailor, Kaiser Chiefs, Amy MacDonald, Kings of Leon, KT Tunstall and The Mavericks along with an eclectic mix of folk and world music. I never assume that anyone else has my tastes though :-)

Cheers again

Dave please enumerate these three things that come to mind for you.

1. It was a mistake. Either cut and paste of the wrong title or the wrong YouTube clip.
2. It was deliberately misleading so people would click on the link to see what it was all about and
3. In the light of Soldier N's confessions about the Royal Family being involved in the Murder of Diana it was an obscure reference to that.

Number 4. Was pointed out by Eddie the Folkie and number 5. is the one you mentioned. So it has lots of ways of interpreting it. Just because you did not think of them does not mean they do not exist.

I think Dave, that when you say that it made no sense, what you really meant is that You cannot relate.

I refer you to the above. I could relate to it at 4 different levels before Eddie's comment. Now 5. Give me a few hours and we could probably double that.

And of course you must take sides because that's what people do on Mudcat when they cannot relate or disagree. Take sides and gang up etc.

I have not belonged to a 'gang' since I left primary school. There are no 'sides' to this. Only differing opinions. If you believe otherwise it is little wonder that you also believe

communication takes place on a much more adversarial level here than it does anywhere else.

Look at my post. There is nothing adversarial in it. Just my opinion. The only one that seems to be fighting is yourself, Suzy. If you do not like it either stop doing it or go elsewhere.

Cheers

Yeah, one would have thought it would have been enough for me to say what I had to to say and for her to say, "OK, thanks for the advice."

Seems to me, Ms. Sock Puppet fits the Internet stereotype I suspected she'd fit. I suspected she couldn't resist the temptation to make a fool of herself. And I admit that my 12:28 message may have targeted the stereotype...

At the risk of extending this.....

Come on guys. Suzy likes the record. It's proto-punk (or more accurately, punk's post-Small Faces). Hence "God Save The Queen". Excited by her discovery, she posts a link to it on an interesting forum. I can work it out and I'm not a philosophy lecturer, I'm an old f*rt.

OK, we can now get back to the 1954 definition of folk music and whether guitars should be allowed.

Methinks Ms. Sock Puppet has an overwhelming need to defend herself against any and all questions, questions major or minor, be she right or be she wrong.

Far be it from ME to question her, despite my long years of experience that tell me that link-only posts don't work very well here at Mudcat.

Dave please enumerate these three things that come to mind for you.

When someone says, "God Save the Queen!" and then follows that up with an "unidentified link" (which btw is instantly identified by clicking on the link) of a British rock band, what might one infer?

I think Dave, that when you say that it made no sense, what you really meant is that You cannot relate. And of course you must take sides because that's what people do on Mudcat when they cannot relate or disagree. Take sides and gang up etc. Truthfully, communication takes place on a much more adversarial level here than it does anywhere else.

Yesterday was the 33rd Anniversary of the demise of Led Zeppelin. Might be the greatest British rock band who ever lived. Would it be too far a stretch to call this version of "Whole Lotta Love" folk, I mean, they do use an acoustic guitar...

There really isn't, as far as I know, any other way of interpreting it :-)

I can think of at least three! There was nothing 'slightly offbeat' about it. Just didn't make sense.

Sigh...

When someone says something in a slightly offbeat manner, one that might require a bit of thought or inference, it's a genuine problem to be fixed and calls for immediate censorship. Everything must make perfect sense and make a clear point to each and every person who reads it. God forbid someone doesn't immediately gather your meaning!

On the other hand, when someone trashes someone they don't agree with in the most explicitly nasty and psychologically violent terms they can muster, that's freedom of speech.

I sense Steve Gardham would like to limit this site to music that would probably exclude all the British rockers. Oh well. Could be for the best, eh?

Well, Suzy -

In Britain, they speak English - in sentences, not in unidentified YouTube links. I suggest you do the same. This is not a big deal, so don't make a big deal of it - it's just that the thread you started made no sense at all, and I found that annoying.

When someone says "God Save the Queen!," it pertains to Britain. The Small Faces are a British band. Seriously, that didn't occur to you? It's a salute to Britain. There really isn't, as far as I know, any other way of interpreting it :-)

No problem talking about any song here, but I think the thread title should have named the song, and the original post should have said something about it instead of just posting an unidentified link. I was waiting for Suzy Sock Puppet to suggest what the thread title should be, but I see that didn't happen - so some other moderator renamed the thread.

Wiki has it as, lots of stuff about folk music, it grew out of a blues discussion forum.

God save the Queen ? Small faces ? an irrelavence.

I agree with Les BTW

Whilst agreeing entirely with your posting, Joe, a quick look back at the home page and it doesn't mention the word 'folk' anywhere but in a few of the thread titles. Perhaps this needs making clearer.

As one would expect the forum appears to take the widest meaning of 'folk music' possible and sometimes this is stretched to the limits as in this case.

Suzy, our list of thread titles in the music section is supposed to serve as an index to folk music information. What does a video of the Small Faces band singing "Tin Soldier" have to do with God saving the Queen?

In general, people (me, in particular) find unexplained links with no discussion to be a very annoying way to start a discussion thread. And this one doesn't even have a title that gives a hint about the content of the link. If you want to start a thread with a link, tell us about the material you're linking to. It would have been appropriate to tell us a bit about Small Faces and the song and why you like them, and maybe to post the lyrics. But not just a link with a disconnected title. That stinks.
