This may be old news to many but just in case you've not heard there's a newly released two disc YT CD with these albums: YT, So Cheerfully Round, Galleries, and the Chicken on a raft EP all together and digitally remastered to boot. (BGO records)
Also there's a soon to be released live YT recording (Fledg'ling)of them at Obelin college 1968 - due on 30th September.

Strongly recommended purchase - it's great that the YT are reaching more people. Such a shame that Peter and Royston aren't with us to benefit, although Heather would no doubt say "Yes they are!"

In a recent review Colin Irwin managed to condemn "Galleries" with faint praise, and I know Mr Bellamy thought it gimmicky, but I love it. I can imagine some young hippie buying the record on the strength of the sleeve and having their mind comprehensively blown.

Didn't Cyril Tawney's feet feature at the start of side 2?

A wonderful group. Most tracks are of classic quality. Without exception they're all done cleverly or beautifully - mostly the latter. Standard-setting harmonies.

The double cd has a nicely presented booklet which includes notes by John O'Regan and talks, among other things, about the band's individual pursuits after YT split. I didn't know that Royston Wood briefly joined Swan Arcade after Jim Boyes left.
Speaking of Cyril Tawney - it's good to see his "Chicken on a Raft" included from the YT EP of the same name.
With a live CD on the horizon perhaps some more long-forgotten recordings might emerge fit for release!

I'm really looking forward to the live album. Apart from anything else, we might get some new photos of 'em in full fig and voice. And some witty Royston rejoinders.

Somehow I managed to see them twice after the breakup, I still can't quite work that out after 40+ years. I THINK one was a benefit and the other was a oneoff at a club where Heather and Anthea Joseph took the money! But I also have a vague memory of Cecil Sharp House.

I'll just go & put me teeth back in.

Ed ~~ They re-formed for a benefit for Clive Woolf, who had had a serious operation & fallen on hard times -- can't say I recall all the details; iirc at Hampstead Town Hall, some time in the early-ish 70s. I am pretty sure they sang Bright Morning Star.

Is this different from the Essential (label rather than description) CDs from 1997(ish)? Just seen some quite horrific prices to purchase those from Japan, surely a decimal place gone astray somewhere? Clearly the notes are useful, but they'd have to be truly outstanding if this is just a re-issue under a new label.

YT were a bit good for sure, but £262 for a single, new, CD? That's about US$ 420.00 at present rates. I might be tempted to sell, even at £50 used, which mine clearly are. I like them, but not that much.

I have a vague recollection that the ESSENTIAL releases dropped a track or two. The new BGO release includes all 3 albums complete,
and the EP.
Huge prices being asked (does anyone actually pay that??) for out
of print material are probably not reaistic with a new release avaiable, unless there is something unique about the previous disks or package.
Additional YT performances are available on FLEDG'LING CD THE HOLLY BEARS THE CROWN.

Heather Wood, the sole surviving member of the Young Tradition, currently lives in New York City where she is the program director for the Folk Music Society of New York, Inc. / New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club. She is also known to frequent the Irish session that takes place every Monday from 8 to 11 PM at the Landmark Tavern on 11th Avenue near West 46th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Heather will also be at the 2013 Fall Folk Music Weekend taking place Friday to Sunday, November 1st to 3rd, at the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson, New York.

Re. gnomad's price enquiry - I bought the double YT CD for £10.35 from eBay and the YT live CD is avaialble to pre-order on Sainbury's Entertainment website for £9.99. Release dates do vary.
With groups like The Young'uns, Dollymops, Teacups, and the fantastic Melrose Quartet I wonder if the folk a cappella form might be making a resurgence; I do hope so.

Must just say that the live CD of Young Tradition is well worth getting if you like that sort of thing. Great recording quality and the trio are in fine fettle. One slight disappointment, as Derek mentioned, that there's no banter - but hey.
There must have been some at least half decent live folk club recordings made over the years - I wonder if any of them may now surface. How difficult would it be to get them officially released? Don't know the ins and outs of that but it would be fantastic even to hear Peter singing/playing solo at a club. Ah well!

I bought Oberlin last week in HMV, for £9.99. They had a stack of them. In fact they had a very good selection of folk altogether. Yes there is no banter, or virtually none, but against that you do get 25 tracks, and it is all very good. So don't delay, buy today.

Peter's concert at the Cockermouth Folk Club in January 1991 was released by Fellside in the same year on the cassette "Songs an' Rummy Conjurin' Tricks" and in 2001 on the CD "Mr Bellamy, Mr Kipling & the Tradition".

I suppose I was just wondering (in the wake of the Oberlin recording) how many other reasonable folk club tapes there might be out there which could conceivably be released. The CD "Mr Bellamy, Mr Kipling & the Tradition" is indeed inspiring stuff; especially, for me, his version of the Young London Waterman. I will forever regret not going to see him at the Portland Arms in Cambridge (c. 1976) when I was a student. A student party seemed more appealing at the time. Oh well, choices we make.

The Oberlin recording seems to have some slight burbles or barely noticable skips - perhaps my copy is defective or there are dropouts in the tapes???
IF between song banter and spoken intros exist on the tapes, IMO it
is a bad production decision to have removed them.
If Heather is following this, perhaps she or someone connected
with the release can explain the thinking.
My thoughts about this issue: If the banter exists, it would require
a 2-CD set to present the songs and chatter. The cost to include
an extra CD is tiny, and from a marketing standpoint, getting 2-cd's
for a little more than 1 cd seems a bargain to the buyer, and a little
extra profit for the producer. This assumes that the SLIGHT extra cost does not put the album out of reach of those who would otherwise buy it.
Another problem may be royalty costs - in the USA, royalties are paid
on a per song basis, in the UK on a per album basis (this is the reason the US versions of the BEATLES albums had tracks deleted which were on the UK version). I do not know if this system still pertains, or if there is some way to limit the royalty costs. A recent A.L.Lloyd 2-cd set was priced at slightly more than a single CD.
I'm happy to have this live YT, but think it could have been even better...

To answer some of the above questions:

The feet on Galleries belonged to Ian Campbell (Ioan Allen, now with Dolby Labs, was our manager at the time and also managed the Campbells. The short intervening tracks were his idea).

The YT re-joined to sing at Southwark Cathedral in a concert organized by Karl Dallas, and again for the concert for Clive Woolf, which was at Cecil Sharp House. We were also all at the Eisteddfod in Dartmouth MA in 1988, where Louisa Jo Killen joined us for several songs.

The two CDs that Castle released were (1) Young Tradition and So CHeerfully Round (complete) and (2) Galleries, the Chicken on a Raft EP, and some tracks, not all, from No Relation, the album Royston and I made in 1977 (with some help frmo Pete and others).

On Oberlin 1968, David Suff of Fledg'ling decided (and I agreed) that we should leave out the chat. Yes, it would have made the thing two CDs long. We felt that it might have been interesting for a one-time listen, but mostly people would want the music.

On the subject of feet, I believe the foot stamp on the Byker Hill recording was enhanced by the simple expedient of standing in drum cases, which I think belonged to the Searchers.
Strange how trivia are retained in the memory...............

As a result of this thread I checked out the photos of YT taken in the late 60s at Bradford Topic Folk Club. If you haven't seen them can I suggest having a look? It gives me a great thrill to see that such a brilliant trio are singing in what looks like a very high ceilinged living room. Brilliant. Inspiring.
Thanx to Heather for the inside info on the Oberlin recording. I wonder if Heather remembers this Bradford gig (Ukrainian Club Clifton Villas)?

Hi Byker - I'm not an expert on the sound quality of CDs perhpas one of the other contributors to this thread could help there but the BGO copy does have as an extra YTs EP "Chicken on a raft" on it (with from memory: Randy Dandy-o and I believe some assorted shanties). The EP is quite tricky to track down - I was fortunate to recently find a vinyl version.

I bought the 1968 Oberlin Concert CD from Heather herself over the weekend while at the Youth Traditional Song Weekend in Becket Massachusetts USA. My wife and I listened to it while driving home on Sunday.
It is well worth purchasing.

In case anyone missed the upload:
Francis Hickory has recently unearthed a recording of a 1968 "My Kind Of Folk" BBC Show hosted by Jackson C Frank. I think it wasn't even known that there was a recording of it, so it should be a bit of a surprise.

Besides some Jackson C Frank recordings, including an unreleased track, it also features three recordings by the Young Tradition: "Innocent Hare", "Randy Dandy-O" and "Pretty Nancy of Yarmouth". The recording also contains bits of interview, it took place just before the Oberlin 1968 concert.

I'm 90% sure that they are live recordings, since I feel they sound denser than the respective studio recordings, but the compression/modulation/whatever effects of the radio recording might fool me...

anyway: enjoy :)

There are many 'My Kind of Folk' recordings floating around. They come from a newly discovered batch of reel-reel recordings. These were digitised to CDs. However the CDs proved faulty (being useless for archiving anyway) and those files that remained have been circulated. They (re)surfaced last year. On Dimeadozen there is something called the 'My Kind Of Folk Restoration Project.' Some of the digitised recordings have been further processed and uploaded in FLAC format.

BTW Dimeadozen insists that each uploaded file is split into 'tracks' and which have their own FLAC files - which is a pain - but its easy enough to rejoin them all!!

Mention of the Young'uns playing a capella 6 years ago.
Now they've learnt to play instruments and widened their repertoire. Think I prefer the early style - though it must get boring to keep doing the same stuff, or hearing it if you are a devoted follower.
