I really like singing Let Him Go, Let Him Tarry because of the attitude in the song. Too many Irish songs about women have them despairing or pregnant and abandoned - not this one!

Would like to find more like this one to sing - suggestions? Not looking for variants on this song, looking for songs with this kind of independent pfffttttt! attitude.

'Farewell He' [aka 'Fare ye well, cold winter'] is a close relative, sung by Jean Redpath.

~~ Best known, perhaps, as the one whose words Maddy Prior, for some perverse reason, sang to the tune of [& under the title of, & with the chorus of] 'All Around My Hat', as title track of Steeleye Span's 1975 record.

Yes, those are variants of Let Him Go....

Looking for other songs - not variants of this one - that have the same attitude for a female singer.

Try An Seanduine (The Old Man) in Donal O'Sullivan's Songs of The Irish. Gizza shout if you can't find it and I'll post a scan on Mudcat. It's in Irish, but O'Sullivan supplies a fairly tasty translation.

"Ain't never going to think that the man I lose
Is the only man among men.
I'll snap my fingers to show I don't care,
I'll buy me a brand-new dress to wear.
I'll scrub my neck and I'll brush my hair,
And start all over again."

'Many a New Day' from Act I of Rodgers & Hammerstein's 'Oklahoma', 1943.

Track down 'Buddy better get on down the line' as sung by the Kingston Trio long ago.

Being men, they sing it from the male point of view, but since it's addressed to 'Buddy,' it was surely originally a woman's song of farewell to a lousy lover. to make it work I change one line like this:

was: hey, hey, pretty baby, hey hey
is"   key, hey, Mr. Hotshot, hey hey

This is a great song to help pass the time om a long drive on the Interstate.

Mormond Braes
Trad

As I went doon to Strichen toon,
I heard a fair maid mourning,
And she was making sair complaint
For her true love ne'er returning.

Chorus
So fare ye weel, ye Mormond Braes,
Where often I've been cheery;
Fare ye weel ye Mormond Braes,
For it's there I lost my dearie.

There's many a horse has snappert an' fa'en
And risen again fu' rarely.
There's many a lass has lost her lad
And gotten another right early.

There's as good fish into the sea,
As ever hae been taken.
I'll cast my line and I'll try again,
For I'm only ainst forsaken.

Sae I'll put on my goon o' green
It's a forsaken token
And that will let the young lads ken
The bonds o' love are broken

So I'll go doon to Strichen toon,
Where I was bred and born in,
And there I'll find another sweetheart,
Will marry me in the mornin'
