The song is an absolute delight - thanks Mickey.
I found that while I was learning it, the tune that kept coming to mind was from "The Boys of the Lough" first album (Trailer LER 2089),
"In Praise of John McGee", sung by Robin Morton.
it fits like the proverbial glove.

Things are going from good to besterest here on the Isle of White. Eventually we got a Screwfix only to be followed just a few months later by Toolstation just yards away. We have had a Lidl for a few years and now, only last week, a new Aldi store opened. I'm going to have to buy another shed!

I'm reminded a little of the old song "The Old Bazaar in Cairo" in which all sorts of daft items for sale are listed. I just adore cut-price stores like QD and Poundland, 99p Stores etc. If you don't have much spare cash, you can still have some Retail Therapy (as Micky sings) I can never resist plastic storage containers, cheap teatowels or scouring pads. Everybody loves a bargain! Do you think it's due to our hunter-gatherer origins?

Funny song indeed. The topic as such is not new, but the "Irish" chorus is the real punchline. The two companies, and Germans generally, can feel flattered.

Aldi's good too, but I like Lidl better - more exotic stuff - riding tack, fishing reels, assorted picture hooks, lovely food, the lis is endless!

Mr Happy, I think they're brilliant, but I reckon my neighbour, like the song, has bought loads of daft stuff she didn't need, and blames the store, not herself! I've had some super things from there; they had a 'stationery' day and I got lovely decorative notebooks, sets of coloured pencils, folders and file-systems etc, all good for stocking fillers, and costing just pennies. Another time, a 'bedding' day, I got a sturdy pure cotton duvet cover made in Germany which has been much admired. I also like their vegetables at half the price of other supermarkets. As with any shop, you have to pick and choose. I'm STILL singing Lidl-dee-Aldi in my head, I'm not sure how to get rid of it!

Loved this song. Sent it to my sister, who passed it on to her two daughters (all in Scotland) She was amazed at how Mickey remembers all the words so glibly. We have both Aldi and Lidl here in Norfolk. My neighbour calls it 'Lidl's for diddles' (meaning a rip-off) Only trouble with this song is, it stays in your head for days. I've been 'Lidl-dee-Aldi' ing all over the house, it gets the housework done cheerily.

As an American, I've been in Aldi stores, but I had never heard of Lidl. I think if Germans start supermarket chains named Lidl and Aldi, then they have only themselves to blame when an Irishman comes along and writes a chorus that goes lidl-dee-aldi.

That's brilliant.

I spent too much this week on Christmas goodies and decorating materials! And duplicates of pie fillings that I already had stocks of. And Italian biscuits. To join the stash of Greek biscuits. And Swedish biscuits.

I do have a rule that I won't buy anything that I won't need, but it's possible to draw that line an awfully long way out.
