Subject: New! Fingerpicks for Rigorous Picking
From: GUEST,Harley Spirit
Date: 04 Oct 13 - 08:41 AM

Hi,

If I have a bad nail or sore finger, I simply use one of my handmade picks. The thimble picks I use are all plastic (for the tone I want) and designed for rigorous picking. My picks remain firmly in place, allowing downstroke & upstroke!. Strum up or down, these picks won't fly off your fingers. I ended up making my own. I made some extras. Those of you interested can order them here:

Eliminate that shrill scratching & clicking noise you get with metal picks on steel strings. My plastic picks may look rough around the edges, but sound beautiful on both steel or nylon strings.

Is there a video showing them being used without flying off?

Yes, I'm using one on my right hand middle finger in this video:

Sorry... omewhat hard to see though. At the time I wasn't even thinking about using this vid as a thimble pick demo. Oh well.

You might want to look at Alaska Piks.

Yes there are other fingerpick manufacturers out there, but none fully encircle the finger to keep from catching on the strings. That's what make my picks so unique. Tone also matters!

Yes you can make your own... many people have said they will, but never do. Most eventually end up coming to me! Let me know how you do and what it costs you. Don't forget your time and labour. Its always a learning experience.
Also you will have to search for the right materials, sizes, etc. Good luck with that!

I just want to add that at the time I made my first prototypes, there were no other resources using the "thimble pick design" I was on my own and never asked my fellow musicians for "start-up funding" (e.g. Kick-Start). Fortunately you do have options... I continue to make my handmade picks available to all!

Are they cut-down shotgun cartridges? Do you make more than one size?

I can't see any reason to leave them rough. I make oud and cumbus picks out of building-industry packaging tape (the stuff you use for holding bundles of bricks together) and I can smooth those, even though they've got fibreglass embedded in the plastic matrix.

Ha! What... Shotgun cartridges? Not very funny these days!

Anyway, they do come in 3 sizes that fit comfortably and seamlessly around your finger, for fast up and down strokes. These picks stay put!

I use Fred Kelly Freedom Picks and love 'em. They are plastic and stay in place.

Perhaps the OP will donate a set to the Mudcat Auction. With Secret Santa up and running, they might make their way to a picker whose review woukd be helpful. I know I'd love to be able to try one with my autoharp, the nutty way I play it and all. But to just try one.... $5 plus shipping, that is too much to front no matter how well-crafted the copy-writing.

Yes, there are other plastic pick manufacturers out there. Some people love them... some don't!
Prices are usually subject to production volumes, material available, location, and production facilities.

Some picks sell for $30+ and some picks sell for pennies on the dollar. We all know why!

They are presumably cut from some sort of tubing intended for another purpose. I guessed shotgun cartridges because of the ridge at the uncut end. If that isn't it, what type of tubing is it?

There should be a name for the kind of business that does minimal processing on a product sold cheap for one purpose and then sells it on at a huge markup for an entirely different one. Medical equipment is the most profitable category for this - a lot of it is rebadged stuff designed for far more downmarket industrial purposes.

Beer hoses might be worth a try - cut a lengthwise slit to make them adjustable.

I just want to add,,,
Those of you who would love to be able to try these picks:
It's only a small investment for something that will probably last you a lifetime.

Thank you and Enjoy!
