Nothing but hours and hours of great music, wonderful people, good weather, pretty scenery, and friends friends friends. A favor -- if anyone has a video of Darriel and Jocelyn's concert, please let me know. Her parents would love to see it. A few favorite moments: Murray Callahan channeling Helen Cain, the "Boop Boop A Doop" girl. Kendall making me cry with The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Andrew & Carole making me cry on the very next song with Andrew's song "Let Me Breathe." Mitzi and Linda making me cry with their song about the cardinals.... Mark Gilston, during a concert that touched on how he turned into the astonishing musician he is, being able to point out a couple of the major musical influences in his life (Lani Hermann, John Roberts) because they were there in his audience. And of course, listening to Darriel and Jocelyn's first concert. Wish you were there. Wish we could keep it going for a month. Wish every day held even a tenth of the magic, beauty, talent and warmth that make up the Getaway. |

Yes, the Parting Songs under the trees was grand, with a pair of wild swans on the river and all. Anyone want to explain WHY we were under the trees? Gorgeous Gary, what was the name and author of the ballad you sang about the Danes smuggling 7000 Jews to Sweden in less than 24 hours before an unannounced Gestapo round-up? It made me cry too, but I cried because it was such a beautiful story of the bright side of mankind's nature. One reason it was an amazing and wonderful weekend for the FSGW folks it that so many old friends were there including quite a few that we don't get to see very often. |

Sometimes it's nice to have some education mixed in with the singing. Also loved Lorraine Van Buren's duet with her niece and Iris Newlin's fiddle playing. Nice to see the kids taking part. As to why we were under the tree with the kamikaze caterpillars? Because the wiring in the women's bathroom in the Retreat Center caught fire. I dunno why we didn't have more workshops outside, it was so stifling hot inside. |

It still brings tears to my eyes... even as I type this. GERDA III: Danish Lighthouse Tender Built in 1926 as a lighthouse tender, the Gerda III appears to be a common Danish workboat. But in October of 1943, she played a much more important role. The boat was used by Henny Sinding, the 19-year-old daughter of the boat's manager, and a four-man crew to rescue Jews from Nazi-occupied Denmark. The refugees were brought to a warehouse along Copenhagen's waterfront and smuggled aboard the Gerda III, hiding in the cargo hold. The little vessel then set out on her official lighthouse supply duties, but detoured to the coast of neutral Sweden and put her "cargo" ashore. Although the vessel was regularly boarded and checked by German soldiers, the refugees were never discovered. The Gerda III rescued approximately 300 Jews, in groups of 10 to 15. Henny Sinding and the brave crew were not part of the organized Danish resistance movement. Ordinary Danish citizens were outraged by the Nazi plan to deport Jews to the death camps. The Danish people mounted a spontaneous effort that saved more than 7,000 of their Jewish neighbors – almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark. By an act of the Danish Parliament, the Gerda III was donated to the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. The vessel was restored to her wartime appearance, complete with neutral flags, by the J. Ring Andersen yard in Denmark. Mystic Seaport is proud to help care for the boat and exhibit her in the United States. |

Just a few additions: On Saturday right after the concert several more were done a cappella in group that just materialized outside the retreat center door Group included Ferrara, Rose, Colin, and me--and others I can't recall. Stunning highlight for me: Colin's leading of "Steady, boys, walk on/ The horse's day is done..." Don't know what it's called. But I've lpved it for years, heard it done wonderfully at Sidmouth more than once. And, as I told him, Colin's rendition was wonderfully faithful to those at Sidmouth--and could hold its own with any I've heard there. Also at that session, Mingulay Boat Song was done. Tenting Tonight. And some others I can't recall. And at the concert Saturday, Jan and I did one we call "The Box", done by Wanda Jackson (sometimes called the 'female Elvis' for her frenetic style.). But our song was not very bouncy. To be continued, I think----this computer is now under assault by an 11-month old and my break is now over. |

It was crazy that I had intended to be in ballads all or most of the afternoon, just poking my nose in other workshops first, but I found it hard once I'd poked my nose in to leave, everything was so great. Then when I made it to the tail end of the ballad workshop that you led (where I got to hear Rose's lovely rendition of (let me get the name right this time) the Great [Grey] Selkie (of Suleskerry)), and had the amusing event (which must happen a lot) of singing a song that I had learned from the previous Getaway and the person I had learned it from (Edmund) was in the room! [Where am I in this sentence?]: Well, then I was so enjoying the ballads that I completely forgot to go to John Roberts' concert, which had been circled heavily on my schedule, and was having such a good time I didn't even realize I had missed it until Sunday! One other correction (along the wildly inaccurate title line): "No such liberty" should be "To Althea From Prison"; Claire's singing of that just soared out over the concert room, my first time hearing that song. Quick etiquette question, as I haven't posted on here much before: Is it annoying at all for me to keep adding corrections as I get them? Does doing so clog up anyone's email box or anything like that? Would it be better if I waited till I had a bunch and then replied to the thread? Or does it matter? OK, oh right, one more thing while i'm still midreply: I am bummed that I won't be able to be at Andrew and Carole's concert! I leave for Massachusetts tomorrow (well, by way of West Virginia) for a dream workshop and then a writer's retreat. October riches! I know it will be wonderful, and I'm sorry to miss it, though. I saw a concert at Janie's house recently (Lulu's Fate) and it's a cozy venue. |

Among other things, the tune to which the broadside had been put (recently) had a really fun chorus. And I finally think I realize what's going on with the list. The titles listed are often just a phrase that popped out. So some titles I thought weren't covered by the list are in fact covered: "There's no gold in California" must be "All That Glitters Is Not Gold", sung by Lucy Saturday night. And "The box he comes home in" must indeed be what Jan and I call "The Box" when we sing it, as we did at the concert Saturday night. By the way, thanks to Heather for the audio of it--it's so great Jan had an opportunity to be front and center, and that it was so well received; particularly great to hear the whole room singing along at the end. This should help in persuading Jan, a vegetarian lurching madly towards veganism (a strange galaxy to West River cooks) to overcome her strong feelings on the food. I keep telling her--, with marginal success-- that the food is not the focus of the weekend. A few more titles I don't think have been covered: The Great Turtle Drive (indelibly linked for me to our own Art Thieme, whose rendition has never been bettered) was done in the Peace cabin Saturday night. So was the one which has the line "They say he died of the chickenpox/ In part I must agree/ One chick too many had he " I have no idea of the title. Also Jan did "Dorset Is Beautiful" with appropriate acccent. In the Hank Williams workshop, "I Saw the Light", "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Pan American", "Hey, Good Lookin", among others, were done. There were at least two I had never heard before, and I thought I knew something about Hank Williams. Judy Cook did what amounted to a medley of "Maryland, My Maryland" and a great proposed substitute version of it (for squeamish souls who don't think "Huzzah, she scorns the Northern scum" should be in our state song.) She was forced to combine the two due to the 5 minute limit on a song in the Saturday concert (surely we should reconsider this straitjacket). Dave Diamond did a self-composed song at the concert about how, since the current Congress is the bottom of the barrel, we should toss them back into the barrel (and out of Congress). The assembled multitude sang the chorus lustily. Dave always has good trenchant comment in song. I don't know the title he gave his song. More later, maybe. |

Other workshops and free-for-all sessions included songs beyond count. The aftermath, as with every Getaway, is a head ringing with scintillating fragments of beautiful songs, and images of their beautiful singers. The magic island, Brigadoon, has a definition of "a place that is idyllic, unaffected by time, or remote from reality. " (Merriam Webster). My perception is that these intervals of solace and respite actually restore the batteries of reality, and fuel the endurance needed to walk through the cold months ahead until another Getaway becomes possible. That's one way of looking at it, anyway. |

I'm just really sorry I wasn't able to stay up til dawn Sunday--a bit under the weather late Saturday after the concert--and had to leave at the intermission of the Sunday concert. Sunday I felt better but the boom was lowered on me. And it wasn't Casey. I had a boatload of good old country songs--really wanted to do "Faded Love" for instance-- but somehow the time was never right. But I have never left a Getaway early before. And it will never happen again. |

Monday morning came much too fast, as usual, and I, for one, really didn't want to leave! I'd like to say thank you to all the lovely people who volunteered, or were coerced, into taking part in the Mummers Play and who made it such a success once again. Every year I wonder if we will manage to pull together a cast and every year we do it, sometimes by the skin of the teeth but, somehow, it always seems to work so well. It was nice to have the children take part this year - they added a whole new dimension to the play. I will say a very special thank you to our St George, who took the part despite having real stage fright and who played it so well. Thank you to Claire for adding harmony to our piece at the Saturday night concert - it made it even more special for both Kendall and myself. Thanks to John Roberts for learning to play Lorena and playing on stage with Kendall during the Sunday evening concert. There were so many amazing highlights throughout the whole weekend. Lots of wonderful workshops, too many that couldn't be attended because of clashes (where's that cloning workshop!) and some terrific late night sings. Coming together with old friends and getting to know new ones a little better is part and parcel of any Getaway and so it was again this year. This year was even more special as Kendall has started performing songs on his own, which, for me, is a real move forward. All in all, I had a great time. |

Already this morning I found to my delight that the curmudgeonly tomato man at the farmer's market plays at a jam and dance deep out in the country, and has graciously invited me to the next. Have just today had a few minutes to take out and polish the memories I tucked in my pockets on the way out the camp road. Here are some: Anything at all that Lani Hermann did. Your humble and grateful servant, madam. "Hear! Hear!" to Kendall back onstage, in ever-more interesting combinations. That's one of the especial delights of the concerts, the crazy mashups of lovely voices and instruments. The campfire. Thank you all for making that magic, especially you, Phil Fox. What a delight of 'guilty pleasures'. Scraps of songs were lobbed across the flickering dark, sometimes a spark caught and anonymous voices passed it back and around with gusto. Sometimes it glowed a bit, then winked out. All fun. The best was the two ladies who did the camp song about swimming with lovely hand motions. Anyone remember? Amos' rendition of "The Basque", especially the command performance AFTER the command performance. Colin's (?) "Last Trip Home" at the concert... THAT to me is just exactly what a 'folk' song should be. With Janie, I loved the "Angels Hovering" song... would love to learn that. I was looking around at the cherished ones on our buttons (Sandy Paton accompanied me all weekend) and thinking of the angels sitting among us, singing, at the Gospel workshop. Always a highlight for me! The Parting Songs on the waterside... could it have been any lovelier? And each song better than the last. I think it was the Chorus Songs workshop when a young woman (who?) with a lovely soft voice sang "Gum Tree Canoe", which I have since learned and sing unceasingly (and probably annoyingly, to housemates : ) The mummer's play is always a highlight, and it was an honor to take part, especially with the wonderfully spirited kids. LOVED the dragon-with-translator : ) Ernie/John Boehner, I hope I didn't hurt you in my enthusiasm. It's great fun to have a sword AND a horse! SO many good things. There was one last-minute scholarship person who never showed, and we rescinded that person's scholarship, which brought things into balance. LOST AND FOUND ITEMS: There was lost stuff for Mitzi Quint, David Jones, and George Stephens, which either has been returned or will be mailed/delivered to them. In addition to that, we have a few dishes from the potluck: an 8 or 9" clear pyrex baking dish, a 9" white bowl with a grey filagree design around the rim, and a white plastic 6" storage dish with green plastic lid. Beyond the pot-luck items, we have a blue women's size 10 (petite?) corduroy Eddie Bauer jacket, a white "le-Tour-de-France" cap (with yellow streaks in the design), a plastic drinking mug from the Wammies (Washington Area Music Association), and a "Wine Monkey" sock for placing on top of a wine bottle (still in its box--probably meant as a silent auction item). Anyone wishing to claim (or release) any of the above, or who needs further description of what might be yours, should let me know by sending me an e-mail. I enjoyed the weekend very much, and there were too many highlights for me to pick one out. Believe it or not, I'm STILL catching up on sleep deficit this weekend. --Charlie Baum |

Besides the aforementioned "Ain't Going To Sea No More" (about destroyers, learned via Oscar Brand), "Wild Boy" (trad. from Will Duke & Dan Quinn) and Mary, Don't You Weep" (trad. from everywhere) , I did "William Riley" (trad. from Mary Jane Queen), "The Emmigrant Song" (by Benji Armstrong), "Waiting For A Train" (Jimmie Rodgers) , "Stagger Lee" (via Archibald, Lloyd Price and Dr. John), "Lifeboat Horses" (with permission from Andrew McKay), Kazoo variations on "The Three Cornered Hat" (inspired by my father's old recording by Paul LaValle & The Cities Service Band Of America) .There were also more turn-of-the-century pop songs, English music hall songs, hymns, spirituals and Broadway tunes than can be listed or remembered from Phil Fox's campfire. If this isn't the most wonderful time of the year, it's probably in the top two or three on the Hit Parade of most attendees. And I HAVE had some rotten Christmases, but I've yet to have a rotten Getaway. - I have lovingly watched pairs of cardinals for years, and that song nailed the experience. Gary's singing of the rescue song was the best I've ever heard him sing ANYTHING on top of it being a gripping song and a much needed history lesson. Ahhhh, there was prescious little I heard that I didn't enjoy and highlights too many to give them all their due. Special thanks again to Judy Cook, from who's cassette collection she farmed out for donations the previous year provided me with two great songs for me to sing this year. |

I arrived at this year's Getaway MUCH later than I was hoping for due to work commitments, but managed to have plenty of fun in the time remaining. Luckily, I had already taken Monday off due to said work commitments, so I was able to make my Sunday night concert debut. In addition to the already-discussed "Denmark 1943", I sung "Humbug Steamship Companies" (John A. Stone), "Son of a Scoundrel" (Shel Silverstein), "Old Blevins" (Hank Card & Conrad Deisler), "Building Up and Tearing England Down" (Dominic Behan), "Molasses" (Tom Rowe), "Non Barleycorn", "When I Was a Boy" (Frank Hayes), and "Naked Highwayman" (Steve Tilston). Severn & Rita - Thanks for the kind words re: "Denmark 1943". I've loved that song since the first time I heard it back in the early/mid-90's.
