Good news in these troubled times: The Hull History Centre has agreed to be the host of this archive. We already have the records of Folk Union One, Green Ginger Morris, a collection of posters and photos, almost a full set of Folk News and the promise of 3 collections of recordings made over the years at Folk Union One (Bluebell) one of them already digitised. I hope to include information from all past Hull folk organisations/events including clubs, dance, sessions etc., and as Hull heavily influenced activities in Beverley, Cottingham and Goole we will eventually include these.

We will be holding a reunion meeting some time in the spring in Hull to reminisce, identify recordings and photos. I will be pleased to receive any relevant material over the next 6 months, but please if you send anything can you mark it clearly with who, where, when, if known? Scanned documents will be acceptable. My contact details are on the home page at www.yorkshirefolksong.net.

Also needed are typed memories of folk activities in Hull. Dates are quite important as at the moment we hope to sort the material chronologically. Memories of non performers are just as valid as those from active participants.

Once the collection is digitised fully we will look to an online presence, but that is at least a year away. We already have a mountain of material. Gathering and identifying stuff is first priority.

We're looking at reunion meeting in the spring in Hull for all Hull area folkies past and present to help with identification of artefacts.

A couple of years ago, on a visit to the Hull history centre to donate some items relating to my old secondary school Riley, I enquired if they had any archive material relating to the music scene in Hull in the 60's especially folk music. The response then was fairly negative and when I offered a couple of items, a recording of the 'Bright Phoebus' R4 docco and 'Land of Green Ginger' Alan Plater's BBC film which featured the Watersons soundtrack and footage of them singing {with Bernie Vickers]. The person I was speaking said the BBC were a bit iffy about their copyright stuff so it couldn't be accepted.
Steve, sounds as though you've made a breakthrough with them so if you want what they didn't let me know. There also used to be a lot of reminicences on the old Waterson:Carthy site before it became the sadly neglected offering it is today.

It could be a longish process but stick with me.

Incidentally how much stuff survived from the Folk Union One library / cupboard - or did it all disappear when the club left the Bluebell?

There's no rush with this so take your time. It would be useful if you have anything that needs fully identifying brought to the spring meeting (TBA)

Regarding the library, Rita gave me the almost complete set of the Journals and the 2 vol Irish Street Ballads which have proved very useful over the years. The rest I'm not sure of. I'll ask Tony and Jenny as they were there when the club folded. There were LPs I seem to remember and these should go into the archive. I have items off the walls at the Bluebell such as early Waterson photos and LP covers. We also have the FU1 lifebelt and the sword-dance shield which were on display at the Hull Folk Festival along with Tony's morris outfit and other memorabilia.

BP, I'm meeting Paul Leaver at the History Centre soon and I'll raise your point with him.

I ought to add that contact details of likely contributors would be very useful at this stage. When I'm a bit better organised I'll post a list of 'What happened to......?'s. I would think we'll be trying to contact most of them through a medium.

There was a full set of the Child Ballads in the FU1 library as well as quite a bit of other stuff.

I may have a list somewhere - will keep looking!

Of course the Journals never actually got as far as the cupboard although they were acquired by/for the club.

I have my Mummers Play St George outfit and a couple of wooden swords courtesy of Eric Mann.

May have a shield somewhere still with the words stuck to the back of it! Or maybe not.

I'm not sure what we will be able to do with larger artefacts like costumes. I don't think the History Centre will be able to take these but I'll enquire. Ideally Hull Museums should take these but they say they are bursting at the seams. Perhaps the Club Museum on Humber Street will be the ideal spot for these. I still have part of Mick Robbie's old morris leather jerkin. Can't find the Green Ginger Band sign though.

Regarding Folk News. I have just checked and I have a complete run from number 1 to 152 (lacking 153-4) then 156 and I'm not sure how long it lasted after that. Toying with the idea of indexing it. Should easily get copies of the later ones we need.

I've had my set of the Dover Child now for many years and if they'd come from the library they'd have the FU1 stamp on them. My set originally belonged to Michael Dawney, he of Iron Muse fame. The only stuff we would include in the archive is anything with actual Hull connection anyway.

Not got anything I am aware of. But the Dover Child is no longer rare (since the Loomis House edition) - though that would be what the club purchased at the time.

When you said Journals, I thought you meant EFDSS journals. I know the Child stuff was there because I borrowed some of it myself on occasion.

I did have a full set of Folk News having kindly been given the one I was missing by Bill Sowerby. I should have a list of what they were so should be able to let you know when they finished.

I gave them to Doc Rowe a number of years ago at the same time as I was offloading my collection of Rugby League programmes, which I got a good price for. Doc might be willing to let you have any you are missing, especially the later ones which are not so informative as there was a lot less going on locally.

You'll be pleased to know I can actually see part of the floor in the loft and some of the walls in the office.

Will try and send you some stuff shortly.

Derek - people did pay good money to see me as St George - enough in fact to provide our beer money for our (newly traditional) Christmas Eve Mumming performances in the pubs of what is known in Hull as the Old Town.
We actually did the play on table tops in one particular pub in order to have enough room.

Steve - I thought you meant the journals but merely mentioned that there was a full set of Child belonging to the club. Martin Bull probably knows what happened to some of the stuff.

Another useful service this forum's members could provide is contact details for anyone involved in the Hull folk scene in the past who might have wandered off the radar. The past doesn't just mean the 60s 70s. It could be any time in the past.

Just a thought.

I have lots of photographs and slides pertaining to folk in Hull.

What I do not have is a high end scanner to make these available to the archive.

Would it be possible to persuade one of the educational institutions or even a commercial outfit to make equipment accessible in order to facilitate this?

I think the History Centre being very new will have all the up-to-date gear. We would need to borrow your originals to copy. I will broach this with them on Tuesday when we meet up to discuss the finer details.

Had another meeting with Paul Leaver at the History Centre. In answer to some of your questions.

Commercial material such as BBC recordings. The problem here is with copyright. However he will check again with his superiors; if the material is scarce and no longer available they might be able to get round this.

Whilst I'm on copyright it needs making clear who will hold copyright on all of the material so if you wish to retain copyright to such as photos donated you need to make this clear. I imagine most of us will simply be glad to have the material all safely deposited in one place without worrying too much about copyright.

He is asking his superiors about your request to bring material to be copied and will let us know ASAP.

The material is to be sorted initially according to institutions being archived, i.e., Folk Union One, Rugby, Green Ginger Morris, etc.

I have a copy of their terms of deposit which can be discussed at the first get together of the steering group.

He is talking about a joint lottery bid to pay for such as digitisation, but this will be further down the line.

Once the material is well under way we will give musical performances at the Centre and and presentations on some of the material. I have already offered a presentation on East Riding folk songs we collected in the 60s and 70s.

There are no limits to the amount of material but such as banking statements etc will be shredded as the actual account books are all in order and present.

They can't take actual artefacts like the costumes and wall decorations but he suggested once we tell Hull Museums the Centre is taking all of the documents Museums should be able to take the artefacts, but if not we could look at the Club Museum on Humber Street.

They are happy to host a reunion gathering some time in the spring, say April, and I will try to fix a date with them, possibly a Saturday.

As I said previously, my priority now is contact details of possible donors/informants. If you can help with this either email me or pm me. 2 priority people I am lacking contact details for are Don Wilkinson (a rough address would help) and Col Jewitt. He has his boat Celia B at Whitby but I need an easier contact such as Stevie's phone number or email address.

Oscar the Frog was group from Barnsley and had at various times Steve Sutcliffe (now resident in the Phillipines) Steve was the main man with the group emerging from Holgate Grammar school Barnsley and had Steve Linstead (now Professor at Univ York in Management), Dave "Harry" Lauder on Keyboards, Sue Banks (from Barnsley)on English concertina (she had been a member of the Radcliffe Stout Band at some stage!) all still alive! One or two others also

What was the Hull connection with OTF? I remember them being around Hull at some point. Bill has already filled me in on some of the personnel. My recollection is of a singing group, not so much a ceilidh band but then my memory is very selective.

Not sure about permathreads but that looks like a good idea in this case.

Just got back from a reunion with members of our old group from the 60s, The Lowlanders, in County Durham. The other 3 members, John Gall, Des Whiting and Ken Canfield now spread around the country. They're all keen to contribute memories and come to a full reunion in April. We're looking at a Saturday in April, possibly at the History Centre with a ceilidh on the night at the Blind Inst if it's still operational. I'll try to avoid any big festival dates.

Hi Steve

Steve Sutcliffe was at Hull University and spent his first year teaching himself fiddle before knuckling down to earn his degree.

He was at various times with the showband we took to hospitals etc as well as shows at various schools, village pubs and the like. As well as being a member of Custer's Last Band for a while.

We always referred to him as Oscar (from the group name) and I'm surprised you don't recall Sue Banks as she was also around a lot at that time (small but perfectly formed). She could well have been at the uni also.

I'm sure Martin Bull will have lots to add but apparently he keeps running away to sea!?

It'll all come flooding back when I see the photos. The invaluable info at the moment is going to be dates and who. I haven't been through my old diaries yet. I'm currently indexing the full set of Folk News and that's bringing back a lot of memories c1975-2010. I'll start setting up some time lines when I've finished this valuable resource. The club minutes will also need indexing at some point with at least local talent and guests separately.

A couple of years down the line and another useful project will be encouraging other regions to set up similar projects if they haven't already done so.

Another useful addition will be setting up a Facebook site which would probably reach a lot more people. Unfortunately I'm not on Facebook, nor do I want to be. Youtube?

I think I'll be able to entice Martin in. He's already aware of the project and in a roundabout way his dad started it all off by donating his tapes.

Just a refresh to let you know we held our inaugural meeting of the steering group and have split the group into responsibilities for different areas such as sessions, folk clubs, dance groups, publicity, etc.

Les, I'd certainly like to take you up on your offer but I'll see you soon anyway.

We have agreed to make the archive chronologically unlimited, so we go back to at least to the 17thc and bang up-to-date.

We have to place some restrictions on geographical area covered for sake of our sanity. At the moment this is still under negotiation whether we limit it to Hull or include the surrounding areas. That's up to the clubs themselves and the 2 main repositories, Hull History Centre and Beverley Treasury House.

What constitutes 'Folk'? Well we've agreed to try to include the widest remit, but for items on the fringe we won't be doing much chasing ourselves, but will accept offered material.

If anyone (in Whitby?) has a contact number for Col Jewitt that would be very helpful. I know where he is but haven't got a visit to Whitby booked till the nice weather returns.

We are currently looking at April 5th or 12th for the reunion, and hopefully about 6 months away for gathering material and making a block deposit.
