Interestingly, the archivist in that article refers to their songs as 'Pop Music' - in 1910!

Also, thanks from me as well. It reminds me more of the Copper Family. But who were the "Hayden Quartet"? They are certainly new to me.

Good one, MrH. Sounds just like the Watersons recorded on an old dictation machine!

Just double-checked and the tune that I like is not the "Merry Blacksmith", but rather the "Jolly Blacksmith". Should have gone to Specsavers, as they say!

Theron Hale's tune features some piccicato, which sounds like the blacksmith's hammer.

There are many tunes concerning Blacksmiths with even more various names. Look
HERE   . Is your tune one of these, Mike?

There is a different "Merry Blacksmith" tune that I especially like. You can hear a 1928 recording by Theron Hale & Daughters reissued on Document CD "Nashville 1928" (DOCD-8037).

He's playing it hornpipe style and throwing a few bars of "Staten Island" in to the B music. Nice playing, though.

This fella does a good job, and you don't have to put up with that horrid guitar accompaniment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beYv9ac-Guo

He does have quite an interesting take on the B part, but that's what life's all about!

Thanks for the tune, Mr. Happy. I'm taking a class at the Irish Center, and the class had played 'The Merry Blacksmith' shortly before I joined it. So I'm glad of the opportunity to print the song and learn it.

A good tune for practicing guitar accompaniment
