At the X-keys in Uppermill, last night, we had Fred Loader as the guest. Fred, Jim the organiser and everyone there all knew Archie to some degree and had many stories to tell about Archie. Jim did a couple of songs Archie would always ask for.

There was much laughter and general mickey taking of the kind Archie used be an enthusiastic partaker of.

There were particular memories of his 80th birthday party concert organised (2000) by Dennis at the Church Inn at Millbrook where Cyril was the main guest. Both stayed at the Church overnight and went to bed well oiled and mellow.

I am Archie Tawney's cousin. Three years ago he fell and broke his hip and my wife and I travelled from our home in Hampshire to Ashton-u-lyne and stayed for a period of five weeks during which time we got him re-housed in sheltered accommodation in Ashton House in Hyde. At Archie's request we took over his affairs and "watched" over him, visiting regularly, some 2 or 3 times annually. On 24th May this year he told me he wasn't well and I got the emergency doctor to visit who got him admitted to Tameside Hospital(not exactly kicking and screaming, but under protest) We travelled up on 27th having been told that his condition had worsened. Shortly after we got to the hospital he passed away, painlessly and in a warm and safe place. My wife and I then had to carry out all arrangements and clear his flat. There was no funeral because he had made arrangements to bequeath his body to Manchester University for teaching purposes. This was done. There will be a cremation ceremony some time next year. I told the Pathologist about Archies liking for Rum, and he said he might not have to embalm him in that case, and that he would advise the Crematorium to "light the blue touchpaper and retire" It is nice to see all the comments posted about him on this site. We have the fondest memories of him as it seems a lot of other people have. Should anyone want further details I can be contacted on 01329662875 or colinsmith876@talktalk.net Archie's favourite charity was the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Should anyone wish to make a donation to them I'm sure Archie will smile on them from wherever he has gone to.

His presence will be remembered at the Wharf tonight and X Keys tomorrow by many who knew, drank and sang with him.

He was 94 earlier this year. He had an endless number of stories about his war service. Principally he was at Dunkirk at the beginning and he was there at the end of the war keeping a check on the German Force that was simply left behind and ordered to stay put by the Allies as they went forward. In between he served in the Arctic Convoys.

Cheers Ash.

So sorry to get this news. Ron and I met Archie just the once, when we did one of our Red Duster maritime shows at the Open Door Folk Club a few years back. He contributed a few songs that evening, a distinctive voice and I'm glad to have met him.

Thanks Fred. We've had a couple of attempts to pin down the home from discusssions but not managed to be precise and I've not seen Dennis either, so I haven't re-posted.

In the meantime I can say that all the usual reprobates at the Buffet Bar, The Cross Keys, The Wharf and a few others wish him all the best.

Please give him my regards. I first met him at a Manchester folk club many years ago, and always looked forward to seeing him at Lancaster. Cyril Tawney was one of my very best friends on the folk scene and I am so sad that neither he nor Rosemary are no longer with us. It's great news that Archie IS still with us, and for a long time yet I hope.
Incidentally, when I first met him he told me he was oftren called Ash, because of his initials, A.S>H. Tawney. Yes please, mention my name to him. Roy Harris.

I was only telling someone about Archie a few weeks ago, and wondering how he was, not having heard of him since I left Manchester. I used to enjoy sitting next to him at Dave Jones' club in Droylsden and hearing his songs and stories.

If there's an address to sent a note to it would be nice, or perhaps Dennis could pass on our good wishes?

Cyril Tawney's older brother Archie's name will not be as familiar to as many people as Cyril's. However in the Manchester area Archie (or Ash) is well known. Also to Lancaster Maritime Festival goers and the the many artists who went through the clubs he used to run.

Last week in the XKeys in Uppermill the news came through that whilst Archie has not been around in the local clubs for some time he is still with us and now living in a home in Audenshaw and visitied regularly by Dennis Hayworth. No doubt still singing Cyrils songs in his own distinct way.

Lovely man.No man wearing a duffle coat downed a rum with such panache, but after being at Dunkirk at the start of WW11 and at the end with a few arctic voyages to Russia between, he was entitled to.
