Subject: October Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing
From: Bat Goddess
Date: 14 Oct 13 - 10:23 AM

Well, it's been a crazy week, but here's this Saturday's shanty sing reminder --

Our monthly shanty, forebitter and ballad session will be this Saturday, October 19th, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM at the Press Room on Daniel Street in Portsmouth, NH.

Last month's sing was a glorious lead in to the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival the following weekend. And it was really good being joined by singers too busy with paying gigs over the summer.

Tom is currently in the CCU at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital (see BS thread "Curmudgeon In Hospital - October 2013") and may not be at the session -- but I'll be there in "being Tom" mode.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Linn

Our best to Tom!

Me! Me! Me!

Seriously. I can do this. Rhode Island's not that far! Deep breath!

I sure hope a lot of the regulars or semi-regulars can make it, because there are a lot of you I'd like to meet and I don't know if I'll ever be able to do this again.

One good thing about me--because I can't carry a tune, I won't steal any of your favorite songs. You know, the one that so-and-so always sings. I do sing along on choruses, though, so if your ears are sensitive, watch out.

I hope I didn't just scare anyone away!

Well, I got a nap yesterday in Tom's bed while he was off doing physical therapy and sitting in a chair. Got to bed at a decent season last night, but woke at 4:30 to a nasty cramp in my calf. Brain too jangled to read so I've been puttering. Just showered and washed my hair.

They moved Tom last night out of Critical Care to a telemetry room. I'm hoping the hospitalist whose care he's now under is not the same one from last February. If so, I'll have to go to the patient advocates office and raise a ruckus and I'm not sure how much ruckus-making energy I have today. According to the news yesterday, he should be released around 1 p.m. today. That should give me well enough time to get Tom home and settled before I turn around and head to the weekly Press Room session. Have to stop at Seaport Fish and get some frozen finnan haddie now that they have some again.

I doubt Tom will come to tomorrow's singaround, so I'll be in "being Tom" mode. Hope we have a fine crew of singers for rafter raising. Charlie and Pete Hale have come up with some ridiculous excuses about San Diego and Liverpool being too far to commute for a session. Whatever happened to worm holes and teleportation and fax machines?!?

ChanteyLass made it to the session last night before I did -- Tom didn't get released from the hospital until around 4 p.m. Got him home, settled, fed, and then headed to Portsmouth to fight with parking. Parked halfway to Kittery, but I made it.

See everyone this afternoon!

Jeri, you missed a really really nice session.

And since I promised everyone I'll REST tomorrow and try to recover from Tom being in the ICU for a week and a half, you probably won't hear about it until maybe Monday.

ChanteyLass and Tyler Buck as well as the usual suspects and Jim, a new guy who came to the maritime festival a few years ago.

News at 11...on Monday.

Sorry I missed it. I made it as far as Market Basket before I gave up. Three weekends and something like 2,000 miles, and I'm OK with staying home. And yeah, it's nothing compared to what you've been through.

Rest well.

Why? What's in the oven? Cookies?

I'd invite you over for dinner except I'm not sure I've got anything that's enough for three people. Besides, I'm being (or intend to be) very anti-social today until I figure out where I put my sanity and recoup my resources a bit.

Right now, since I'm up at this ungodly hour on a Sunday, I've got a date with a large cup of jasmine tea and a book. If I come out from under my rock (er, pillow), I'll call you at some civilized hour.

Okay, I know you said I didn't HAVE to do it today, but here it is.

Quite a session. And before the session I got to talk to Larry Garland (jazz piano master whose group plays the Press Room every Saturday lunchtime) for the first time in MONTHS! And I gave jazz drummer Greg Brown a hug – he didn't know about "Hug a Drummer Day" this past week. Hugged Larry, too.

Anywho, it was a shanty sing where a lot of regulars had called in their excuses (for what they're worth) – Pete Hale is in Liverpool. Geez, he could hop across the pond for the session, couldn't he? His FATHER comes from way the heck down in Massachusetts a lot more regularly than Pete makes the session. And Charley Noble is in San Diego. Bad timing, but, well, he did get to the Portsmouth Maritime Festival. And a couple people had gigs (although Carol Coronis did a couple songs before she had to leave for a gig), and Dave Hallowell was involved with the New Hampshire Film Festival this weekend (as was Dan Young, Susan's husband). Bruce…well, I've got to give Bruce some guff. He used late season golf as an excuse…;-)

The crew this months was me (Linn = Bat Goddess), being both me and Tom (Curmudgeon); Don Hale who usually gets the award for distance but this month was beat out by ChanteyLass from Rhode Island. (Don's ALMOST as far south in Massachusetts as you can get without being in Rhode Island.) Steve Willard from Gloucester with his wife Arlene and friend Reuben; Carol Coronis pre-gig; Dianne Lavoie; Gail Dedricksen, Susan Young (who brought COOKIES!!!!), Tami Bill (Ranger1) and her intern Jenn; Tyler Buck; Mike Modern; Justine Donovan and Steve Smith.

1. Shanty In Old Shanty Town [Jerry Bryant] – Linn Schulz
(I ended up doing it twice in two different keys)
2. Lowlands of Holland – Carol Coronis
3. Willie Taylor – Carol Coronis
4. Cairo-Town – Don Hale
5. All For Me Grog – Dianne Lavoie
6. Yangtze River – Steve Willard
7. Leaving of Liverpool – Susan Young
8. Home, Dearie, Home – Linn Schulz
9. Hurrah, Sing Fare You Well – Don Hale
10. Fisher Lassies – Tyler Buck
11. Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Singer – Dianne Lavoie
12. Cannery Shed – Linn Schulz (another fish guts song)
13. Make or Break Harbor – Steve Willard
14. New Aberdeen Government Store – Mike Modern
15. Gin Was Mother's Ruin / Nurse Pinched the Baby – Linn Schulz
16. Fisherman's Lassie – Susan Young
17. Fire Down Below (Fetch a Bucket of Water) – Don Hale
18. Rollin' Down the River – Justine Donovan
19. Boozing, Bloody Well Boozing – Dianne Lavoie
[And I told how Helene Jones, Jeri, Meg Terreson and I got together sometime in the late '80s and wrote "Screwing, Bloody Well Screwing" to this…alas, no one saved the creation.]
20. Pubic Hair ("Baby Face" parody) – Dianne Lavoie
21. Three Drunken Maidens – Linn Schulz
22. Let No Man Steal Your Thyme – Tyler Buck
23. Dundee Weaver – Linn Schulz
24. The Lobster – Linn Schulz
25. Dumiana – Mike Modern
26. Cruel Was the Press Gang – Susan Young
27. Big Bow Wow – Don Hale
28. Johnny Come Down to Hilo – Justine Donovan
29. Who Will Feed the People? – Steve Willard [Tom Paxton
song tweaked from farmers to fishermen)
30. Harbors of Home [Joan Sprung] – Linn Schulz
31. Sugar In the Hold – Susan Young
32. The Jeannie C. – Dianne Lavoie
33. Lady Franklin's Lament – Don Hale
34. The Mermaid – Susan Young
35. Fisher Row – Tyler Buck
36. London Julie – Justine Donovan
37. Drill Ye Tarriers, Drill – Mike Modern
38. Maggie May – Linn Schulz
39. Female Drummer/Music Played So Grand – Susan Young
40. Song For the Mira – Steve Willard
41. Wooden Leg Parson – Mike Modern
42. Nine Times a Night – Linn Schulz
43. My Johnny Was a Shoemaker – Tyler Buck
44. Oh, Riley, Oh, Man – Justine Donovan
45. Congo River – Dianne Lavoie
46. Cruising 'Round Yarmouth – Linn Schulz (forgot a verse & voice going)
47. Here's to You and Our Time Together – Steve Willard
48. Here's a Health to the Company and One to My Lass – Justine Donovan
49. Aunt Clara – Linn Schulz (there was a logical reason at the time…)
50. Going On Board the Rosabella – Don Hale
51. Johnson Girls – Justine Donovan
52. Nelson's Prayer – Don Hale

Maybe not quite so many songs this month because we spent more time talking about the songs and their origins and good stories of great singers. But, because we were a bit smaller crew than usual, we each got more songs in. It made for a truly lovely session.

Also at the session was Jim Kyle (I think he said his name was – he's promised to email me.) He came to the PMFF a few years ago and has been trying to make it to this session. He actually showed up last Saturday because he'd found a website that said it was the second Saturday of the month. (Which is was in the first year – 10 years ago.)
A really really nice session. I desperately needed, after Tom being in the ICU for a week and a half, but finally home, some musical healing and Saturday's session truly proved that music revives a weary soul.

It was great having ChanteyLass at both sessions -- Friday weekly trad session and Saturday's sea music sing.

I just feel bad that I was so...depleted I guess would be the word, after Tom being in Critical Care for a week and a half. I'd just gotten him home late in the afternoon on Friday, got him settled in and fed, and then I took off to Portsmouth to the session.

I didn't have a lot of time either day to be more social with ChanteyLass as I was being (very pleasantly) being "accosted" from all sides... And I was so fried what I REALLY wanted to do was curl up in the fetal position and suck my thumb until I remembered where I'd stowed my sanity and my patience for safekeeping.

Being 'on this side of the pond' I have little chance of joining your monthly sessions, however I always read the song list with great interest, looking for songs I don't know & 'going after them. This month I was interested to see "So here's to you and our time together"
Would this be the song by Alan Bell? If so it's nice to see it has 'crossed' over from Fleetwood, Lancashire,England.

Sailor Ron, it may very well be. I asked Steve at the session where he got it, but now I can't remember the details.

I don't have Steve's contact info but I think I can ask a couple people for his phone or email and then ask him again about the song. Or ask him next month; he's becoming a regular.

I had a wonderful time in NH and ME. The trad session was great, but it's probably no surprise that I enjoyed the chantey sing even more. It started slowly but picked up speed as more people arrived. It also veered into "bawdy territory" for a while, but that's not surprising with this kind of music. It was great fun to meet Bat Goddess and Ranger1 and GUEST: Justine. As for you, Linn, you managed very well, especially considering the strain you've been facing. While I would have liked to spend more time with you, I didn't want to monopolize you. You have obligations to the regulars at The Press Room, and I didn't want to delay your getting home to Tom. Special thanks to Tami and her friends for walking me back to the parking garage. I'm not sure I could have found my way in the dark, so having a ranger guide me was reassuring.

Maeve, I also had a wonderful time with you and Truelove. I enjoyed the Salt Bay Cafe, and I loved seeing your home and farm. What a lovely afternoon! I hope I didn't keep you both from your chores too long.

Charlie, I'll catch up with you in Mystic where I hope to meet Judy. I've enjoyed reading about your trip and seeing your photos.
