Subject: RE: BLJ's Electric Chair/ Big Al Whittle From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Oct 13 - 01:44 PM Thanks Gnu. i always rush to record - usually before I've got a proper handle on songs. I can hear a bit of flummery going on. Still, I think i got some elements of the sound right. You don't know if you don't try. |

Subject: BLJ's Electric Chair/ Big Al Whittle From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Oct 13 - 10:14 AM I had to personalise the lyrics - the original has that folk thing that you get in Turpin Hero, where the narrative is sometimes in the first person - sometimes in the the third - sometimes its Lemon talking about a friend, sometimes its Lemon gacing his doom in the chair - imagining his folks reaction at having his electrocuted body sent back to them for burial. he's so near the subject - you can feel it. Just what incidents were happening around him that made him concentrate so hard - we can only guess. No one seems to have asked him his thoughts, and recorded his answers. Anyway I had a toot at it. I hope you like the results. I'm not at all confident about it - but as Martin Carthy says the only disservice you pay folksong is not to sing it. http://soundcloud.com/denise_whittle/electric-chair-blues-by-big-al |
