Subject: Flanders 'Ancient Ballads' Vols. 2 & 3
From: MartinRyan

I've ended up with Vols. 1 & 4 of "Ancient Ballads traditionally sung in New England" as orphans. A quick look online shows 2 & 3 available in the States- but the postage is high. Anyone got either/both volumes on this side of the pond, looking for a good home?

Regards

Good luck with that one Martin - a notoriously difficult set to trace in our experience - I'd grab anything on offer if I were you if you seriously want a full set.
We had volume one for years and finally stumbled on a full set when a collector friend sold off many of his books to finance the issuing of CDs from his collection of field recordings.
A set well worth having (and having part sets is not unlike waiting for the other shoe to hit the floor in the upstairs flat!)

Martin,
I have a set but it's needed. I'll keep a look out though. It's always worth a weekly look at EBay. Dave Eyre might have some. He has an online catalogue. Have you tried ABE Books?

Tried ABE books - whence the USA info. Dave Eyre was next on my list!

Thanks for keeping a weather eye.

Meant to add that The Book Depository posts to everywhere (don't know if Birmingham counts) free of charge which makes a huge difference to those of us living on the edge of the planet (got the wonderful 'Atlas of the Great Irish Famine earlier this year, which would have cost nearly as much as the book itself to post).

Parts of sets is always a problem. Grab them where you can. I have a set of Greig-Duncan which is missing vols. 5 & 6 and it looks like the only way to fill the gap is to bite the bullet, bu a full set when available and then sell off the odd volumes.

I can't believe my luck. I've just picked up a copy of volume one for a fiver! Nice clean condition as well. Considering the prices they usually go for, that is some bargain.

All I need now is vols 2, 3 & 4.

Just been in Spellman's in York. No FAB but a whole shelf of folkie books up for grabs at reasonable prices, some unusual with a mainly Irish leaning. Luckily I've got most of them otherwise my wallet would be empty by now.

My problem was the reverse. I picked up 2+3 cheap, but had to search for 1 and 4.

I have filled in other sets- usually all it takes is a little patience. Many libraries have discarded books whose circulation record is poor, and volumes of sets get separated. I remember that that 2+3 were discarded by Antioch University, the others came from different sources.

I got my set from Rival Books 810 S Main, Hailey, in 2004 before the postage went through the roof and while the exchange rate was favourable. total cost $39.50. Couldn't tell you what that was in sterling at the time but not much more than £20.

Previous owner was one Joseph E Schreide? of Chicago.

Well, Steve, you have succeeded in making many of us very jealous. I think this is a book that CAMSCO/Dick Greenhaus should consider for reissue.

Excellent idea Joe
Camsco had done a great job in making unavailable books accessible.
I'm always horrified when I find how much books we paid a few pennies for now cost.
In the Sixties I started to purchase the Bronson at £10 per volume -   got as far as volume two, but couldn't afford Three because it had risen to £15.
Finally got the last two via the kind assistance of the Librarian at Cecil Sharp House - cost me £25 each
Good days!

I think a lot of books are coming down in price due to the 'print on demand' issues and the fact that many are coming online now. For instance I have full sets of Roxburghe, Euing and Pepys which have served me very well but the originals are now all online at EBBA. Don't regret buying them when they were cheap, be thankful you can get many of them for nothing now!

Abebooks, offers starting at: Vol. 1 and 3, $15; vol. 2 at $20, Vol. 4 at $25.

Reprinting is expensive; the above prices would be hard to equal.

When Q speaks, I listen. I got the entire set in what is described as good condition for $104.95. ABEBooks has three volumes offered for sale by Lighthouse Books, signed by the author, in near-fine condition, for slightly more. The missing volume is available in very good condition from other sellers.
Thanks for the advice, Q.

Still looking for affordable copies of the remaining 3 volumes, without much luck.

However, I've discovered that HHF's Ballads Migrant in New England is available from one of these bespoke re-publishers for around £18-00. At that price it's obviously an economical purchase. However, I'm not familiar with this book and I'd be glad if someone could tell me whether it duplicates any of the material in ABTSINE, or whether it's a completely independent publication?

Many anticipatory muchos.

Some currently offered are vol. 1 and 3 at $15 each, vol. 2 at $20 and 4 at $25. Or the 4 vols. for $120.

Fred, only about half of Ballads Migrant deals with Child Ballads, the other with native pieces and broadsides so still worth having.

Q. Thanks for that. However, the question I was trying to ask, and probably didn't put it very well was, is it worth my forking out for a copy of Ballads Migrant in New England when I plan to buy the remaining 3 volumes of Ancient Ballads anyway?

To put that another way, are the two publications independent of each other, or does BMINE duplicate material which was published in Ancient Ballads?

Hi, Fred - you could use Roud (click) to compare the contents of the Flanders books. One should also be able to do that with the Traditional Ballad Index, but the Ballad Index search engine hasn't been very cooperative in recent years. This link seems to work, but are there only 31 songs in the first volume of "Ancient Ballada"?

-Joe, pleased to be a new owner of "Ancient Ballads"-

Flanders' vol. 1 has Child 1-31, 2 has 53-93, 3 has 95-243, 4 has 250-295. The number of versions varies from one to 36 (Trinity/Golden Vanity).
Publication dates 1960-1965.

A number of versions of the songs were published after that date.

Thanks folks, but I'm not worried about whether the two sets print the same Child ballads. Rather, I'm concerned as to whether BMINE might repeat particular versions which were already in Ancient Ballads traditionally sung in New England.

Happy happy, singee dancey. I was just about to order the instant reprint when I found an American dealer with a cheap hardback second hand copy and a very reasonable shipping cost. I'll spare you the details, but the whole deal came to just £11-39p.

If you live in Europe and find a book you want in the U.S., don't despair. U.S. booksellers who contract through Amazon and other companies, often have to charge less for shipping than the actual cost, and absorb the loss. I bought a book for Martin Ryan and shipped it to Ireland. It cost me about $30 to send one book, but a bookseller would have had to charge much less.
Live and learn.

I bought mine from Avols Bookshop in Madison Wisconsin, as I pulled one volume form the shelf a second volume fell to the floor and was open at "The Golden Vanity". A version collected from a relative who went to the States in around 1850. Needless to say I was well and truly hooked
