years ago I knew an American woman married to a Black Muslim and she had converted to Islam and we discussed her adopted lifestyle.

A strict reading of the Koran implies respect for women... but NOT equality.. somewhat akin to the separate but equal BS of our segregated past. The reality is that women are second class persons that may or may not be "allowed" to partake in activites that would traditionally be done by males. Throughout the world, women find themselves in this position... it's not limited to Islam.

That said... the funniest thing I saw as a kid was when our nuns were allowed to change out their "habits" and could drive cars... a small compact car filled with nuns driving around in circles in the church parking lot & school yard as they practiced was funnier than any circus clown car.

I put a comment there, lamenting the lack of understanding of the satire on the whole driving ban business - linking it to the position of women in Islam as a whole - and got a tart riposte saying that the ban was "nothing to do with Islam" but was purely a Saudi Government issue. Islam treats women with respect, and I should get my facts right.

Hmmm... a can of ill-considered worms there - I think I'll leave it at that!
