Hope you've been good this year.

Thank you for the hints. I have sent the elves searching with swatches of material in your favorite colors.

One other piece of information is required. What is your view on candy?

I believe in Joe Offer. I am an Imposter.

Hmm...Firecat is in the UK. Do they eat liver in the UK? I could send some. Raw liver is very interesting to post. If it is delivered at all it is generally a different colour from when it started. She didn't say whether or not she ate meat. She could be a Vegan, having come here on a starship from Vega. Well, I have time to search everywhere, to the very ends of the Earth, to find something "appropriate."

Or she could be a Dalek or have been with The Master on Gallifrey. Oh my goodness! Thank the lord that I have a Tardis.

From: GUEST

My sleigh is never going to find you. UK, I get that, but where ua Monmouthshire?    I hear that last year my elves were a little slow and that your gift was costly to receive.   Any hints in how I can avoid that this year?

Oh, hello Santa! Didn't see you there. I was being good. No really. Don't listen to my wicked step mummy.

I definitely believe in candy! Preferrably chocolate of the dark variety :-) Maple, however, is evil and must be stopped along with its minion, the raisin.

From: Anne Lister

Oooh - so that Guest was my Santa? And I didn't get a close look at you!
Monmouthshire, dear Santa, is on the south eastern side of Wales, just before you get to England. It has a noble history and was the birthplace of Charles Rolls (as in Rolls Royce), Henry V and many others. So setting your reindeer's SatNav to the post code given will bring your sleigh to our door, pretty much.
Normally speaking I know you don't have any trouble with the taxman and import/export duties as you simply fly above their heads ... but gifts from outside the UK coming in are free of tax if the value is £36.00 or below as long as you haven't put any special delivery charges on top of the value of the goods.
Does that help?

If not, your elf can take care of it for her.

I've got a secret santee too and is s/he going to be surprised! I know I was, because I didn't thing any Catters were in Antarctica. Of course, it IS summer there at the moment so there are probably beach parties and things.

To let you know that I am here and thinking of you, my dear. Wondering what would please you best ... The reindeer are excited about visiting your part of the world and at least one elf is already licking his lips at the thought of lobsters. We shall see what we can do.
If you could see your way to providing a bowl of chowder, that would be much appreciated - and possibly a glass of Moxie?

Being a very polite person, if you DID get me the item mentioned I would have to listen to it, but then you might have Kendall hunting you to the ends of the earth for poluting the air with 'noise'. Would it be worth it, do you think?

So if the postal workers ask , I shall tell them I am shipping worthless reindeer poo. That should avoid taxation. But they might think that's toxic waste. Better come up with a better idea, but it shall definitely be something officially of low worth! Can 't have you paying to receive a gift cram Santa,

Dear Maeve's Meditative MidWinter Magus,

Thank you for your thoughtful missive.
Regarding your subtle request for Moxie, Lobster, and Chowder-
While we would be delighted to prepare a welcoming meal
for you, we are inland from coastal waters and sou'east from Moxieland.
Even so, we have plenty of moxie and will happily lob some well-stered chow onto our Santa Plate over der.

Kindly caution your elves to conduct their recognizance visits without
disturbing the bantams- they work hard and need their sleep.

Thank you,

Maeve Being Good

Your list is inspiring some careful thought
Though none of your gifts is newly bought
Your Santa's been searching the whole year through
In hopes special gifts will bring smiles to you,
Like the light through a stained glass window.

Though you try to guess my identity
You are wrong- that's my helper- it is not me.
Please believe any hints from Reynardine
That fox and family are pals of mine
And they're paid to distract you, Santee!

Sing for your supper,
Sing for your tea,
Sing for the festival,
Sing for me.

Hello there young lady - I guess you've been waiting for me a while. The elves messed up my computer and it has been in the shop for a few days. Anywho, it's back now and the elves have been put on double duties to make up for their mischief and to make sure that there will be a bagful of goodies heading east.

Now, do you wear earrings? Danglies or studs is the next question. We need the answer to make the right selection - Mrs Claus has way too many of the things and can quite easily donate a pair for such a worthy cause.

By the way, we do know that you have been exceptionally good this year so there will be no chance of coal turning up in your bag this time.

I've got to go now, lots still to do.

Now to wrap them and box them and hope that they arrive in good order...I am of course trusting to you to keep your standards of behaviour high, as I don't always get ready as promptly as this and there are still some weeks to go in which you might let yourself down badly.
I shall be posting one elf on permanent surveillance duties, just in case, with the magic potion to transform the contents of the box into dust and ashes, but I sincerely hope he won't need to use it. If you leave the occasional snack or beverage out for him he will, I'm sure, be very grateful.

Dear Maeve's meditative MidWinter Magus,

How wise of you to be so well prepared early in the season! It must be due to your many, many, many years of experience. I shall endeavor to behave in such a manner to make you proud.

By the bye- you said "I shall be posting one elf on permanent surveillance duties...". It is indeed thoughtful and meditative in the extreme for you to tell me, but I must say we have already spotted your little helper. I hesitate to ask... but did you not think it a mite extreme to have him appear in the form of a weasel? Dancing around between the chicken coop and the stone wall in broad daylight with the bantams out and about, and wearing a white coat when the grass is still green... It does make one wonder. He is welcome to munch on voles, but not the chickens.

Anyroad, I thank you for your efficient and thoughtful efforts.

I found that some of the elves have given me defective reports. They have been disciplined (flogged while hung by the thumbs from the rigging) and serve as an example to the others. Any further false reports will have the reporter(s) keelhauled. Keelhauling is a harsh punishment you will say, but remember that this is the Arctic Ocean and a harsh environment.

Old Santa is not one of those nicey-nicey employers. Besides, where's an elf going to get a job in this economy? Hogwarts isn't hiring and scraping for one's self in the countryside isn't exactly a flat in Soho or even in Glasgow.

Maeve, my surveillance elf is far too astute to be detected ... she is unlikely to be in animal guise, whether stoat, weasel, ferret, coyote or porcupine and although her singing voice has been criticised it has never before been described as "howling wildly". I suggest you put all of your efforts into better behaviour (it is misleading to think that if you are working hard you are necessarily behaving well ... much depends on what kind of work you are doing) and don't try too hard to spot my elf. The occasional bowl of porridge (I believe you refer to it as "oatmeal") left in a quiet spot might help (sweetened with honey and cinnamon, if it's not too much trouble) and if my elf doesn't eat it perhaps some other creature might.
You have, however, successfully worried my reindeer now about the presence of the coyotes. Rudolph wonders whether a glowing proboscis is likely to scare them off.

Dear Meditative Santa,

I am sure your elf is both subtle and clever, but I worry that yesterday's gale may have been a challenge. I do hope he/she wasn't sheltering in the grape arbor when the wind lifted it and redeposited it a foot away?

As for behavior, I defy anyone to behave poorly when sharing home, land, and life with such a treasure of a husband as I married. Kindly tell your elf that a warm welcome awaits within our house. No need to shiver outside in hopes of porridge- come along inside and have a bowlful beside the woodstove while I spin this year's fleeces.

Cordially,

Maeve

The warmth of your welcome is appreciated but you will realise there is little point in a surveillance elf if she is made too comfortable by the object of her duties. And we appreciate your concern, but again you will realise that my elves and my reindeer are used to adverse weather conditions and can, indeed, foretell much of what will happen atmospherically.
Your package, my dear, has been entrusted to paid messengers so that it doesn't get caught up in my usual Christmas deliveries. I have NOT marked "Do not open until December 25th" on the box, and trust to your good judgement, and the only clue to its origin will be an obscure address for potential return if it were to go astray ... but I trust it will travel well.

It's great news that your parcel has arrived so early, but I had asked the delivery dragon to ensure that you received it 'just in time'. You just can't get the staff, can you?

We will be having a fairly quiet traditional Christmas this year. Some of our family are away doing other things, so there will be less of us around the table. Not a BBQ or sandcastle in sight and there may even be some snow.

You mentioned that you have an idea who I am, but that I might have moved recently. Quite unlikely, I assure you, as I find that this North Pole residence is perfectly habitable, though not to everyone's taste.

Hopefully you will find your gift to be suitable, but beware, if you are bad or you open it before the big day it will turn into a lump of polish coal. Compliments of the season to you and yours.

Did you think I'd forgotten you this year? Absolutely not! Wire reports (lists are so old school - Santa uses Google.com now) indicate that you were a very good girl.

The elves have assembled a streamlined parcel-like-object to slip into the bag on the sleigh. Assuming your rooftop is suitable for landing, said-parcel will be delivered via reindeer. If our satellite GPS and Google Earth search indicates loose tiles or bumpy thatch, we will engage the services of a parcel delivery partner.

Yours cordially,

Dear 42,

I must say you don't look a day over 39.

My name is Elfish Presently, Santa's research elf assigned to your case. I must say I was intrigued to be sent to exotic Spiceland Indiana. I wasn't even sure there was much of anything exotic in Indiana, but I was definitely pleasantly proven wrong by the wonders of your thriving metropolis and your year-round seasonal festival.

I walked past the salt mines and the pepper mill where you urned your first celery. I passed by the bakery where local dillatantes were preparing dill-dough for pickle bread. I passed the church where they'd mustard up all the unsavory sinner-men to convert them to true bay-leafers. I met up with Rosemary and that nut Meg who helped drive my caraway with a rye smile or two. Meg did a Pole Dance like I'd never seen up North! All was very impressive, I must say!

I managed to observe you while parcely hidden behind the mint. (I always wanted to ex-spearmint at being a Mint-Spy!). So, rest easy. Your dreams will be fulfilled and filled full.

Anyway, I've found out that spice IS truly the variety of life and you can be assured that your box of bounty will cumin thyme for your Merry Christmas.

Enjoy!
Elfish Presently
Research Elf
North Pole

P.S. Only 57 more dulcimists to go. I'm glad I was instrumental in helping.

I feel I must have to apologise. My elves went on strike due to poor working conditions and low pay, ok, no pay. For some reason, they felt they were due some sort of compensation for all the work they've done for me over the centuries. I did, and still do not, agree. They refused to work on your pressie, and get it out in a timely fashion. In fact,t ehy refused to do any work at all, feed the reindeer, clean up poop from the stalls, test Rudpolph's virility, for somereason with that last, they started demanding rubber gloves before they touch him there. I forbade them, said Rudolph want's it to feel natural.

Anyway, to make a long story short, the lazy bastards refused to see things my way. That is until I introduced to them the fine old Roman tradition of decimation. Now that there are a 10th less elves to ruin the holidays, and a few fatter polar bears and abominable snowmen, the rest are more than happy to make up for loss time and take up the slack of the decreased work force. I will make sure that, if need be, the reindeer make a special trip to your house so an elf may hand deliver your gift. Sorry about the delay.

So, your gift might be a little late. I was feeding the elves to the reindeer when I was taken up by an officer of the law. It appears that there is some law about feeding elves to reindeer -- it causes tooth decay or root rot or black tongue or something -- and I have spent the last few days in durance vile. This has put me behind time, but I managed to go free when I reminded the judge that I had a "naughty and nice" list and he was on it and that I **could** give it over to the press. How quickly can YOU say, "Case dismissed"?

In your beadmaking, are you doing lampwork, Sculpy, paper, or what other kind of beadmaking? For shippable food, do you prefer chocolate (what kind), a sweet or savory something,a favored comfort food? You're allowed to choose more than one. So glad to hear from the research elf assigned to my gift delivery. My, you have a way with the spicy words!    Actually, Spiceland was not given its name because of the Many kinds of spices in the area though.   It was the spicebush Lindera Bezoin   which used to grow all over the area. The Quakers who settled the area named thetown Spiceland, because of the fragrance of this particular bush.    Although I am not one of them,   the Quakers are still in abundance in the area.   Their church is right in the center of town. So you might tell the rest of the elves that they best not get too tipsy on eggnog or other spirits of the season before stopping here.   I'd hate for Santa to be run out of town by one of the local Quaker leaders.

I have a Santa!!!

No, I'm not making beads at all -- just stringing them together in interesting combinations...if I ever find the time again. (And I probably will MAKE time for it after all this paperwork and tying up of loose ends and flying off to funerals and plannint Tom's memorial, etcet etcet finally settles down a bit.) And start practicing letterforms in slate, which is something else that was on hold while dealing with Tom's illnesses.

My favorite sweet is actually NOT chocolate, but caramel...however caramel and chocolate makes a really fine combination. I prefer good chocolate, but it can be milk, dark or even white "chocolate" (which really isn't chocolate, but I love it.) I also like very good fruit jellies. Oh, and dark chocolate covered candied orange rind. My favorite dessert is actually espresso Romano with a good dark rum...but that might be difficult to ship. What I REALLY enjoy are foods or candies that I'm unlikely to run across in my neck of the woods -- regional specialties. I have a very adventurous palate...

Thank you, Santa, for reassuring me!

In layers, then sent to your own sweet dell.
From Santa- a friend in a faraway place
To you- bringing laughter and smiles to your face,
Like the light through a stained glass window.

This Santa's a redhead, that much is true
More redheads will hide in my package to you.
I'm grateful for hints from old Reynardine,
And now he yips in a manner refined,
"Happy Christmas to all and a New Year divine!"

Sing for your supper,
Sing for your tea,
Sing for the festival,
Sing for me.

PS Only the elves and bluebirds know when your parcel will arrive-
kindly enjoy it as soon as you like, whenever it appears.

Imprisonment does not become me. As for those elves who did it, I shall ensure that they are dealt with in an appropriate manner.

As part of your Christmas present, you may decide: 1. Drawing and Quartering, 2. Boiling alive (in memory of ol' King Henry, 3. Being slowly sawed in half with a wooden saw, or 4. Being made to accurately translate the entire "Aenid" from Latin to Greek to Aramaic. You may chose, my dear.

I got a package from the UK. Amorphous in shape, no discernible smell...I don't think I'll have to call the bomb squad. Time will tell.

That's ok, Becca. I'm use to getting coal. Though I must admit, some years I've been so naughty, Santa didn't even bother with the coal.

Hi again Santa!

Erm, as much as I like the study of death, and methods thereof, I think a suitable - and mind-expanding - punishment would be the Aeneid translation.

However, to make it a greater punishment, could you make them translate it into Klingon as well? :-)

Santa.   Your elf arrived.   He must have had skiis on that sleigh to make it through the high water we have had here the past couple f days.   I must admit...   I did not wait 'till Christmas.   Well, there was not a "Do not open until...." tag on it.    A box of music!   For what more could one ask?   Maggie Sansone is one of my favorites.   Saw her at a festival out in Leesburg maybe a dozen or more years ago. I have one of the vocal samplers in my car right now. A great Christmas gift.   Thank you, Santa.

Dulcimer 42,

I'm glad my package was a high water mark of a wet holiday season and worth wading for and through, even if you opened it early. There WAS some holiday music in there, so it's probably better that you did do.

Oh SlyFox Santa, how lovely it is to receive your rhymes!

I have little imagination myself so your clues of faraway places and redheads haven't helped me to guess your identity. Although Reynardine and his friends patrols our garden throughout the day, they have left neither hints nor gifts, but have been happy to eat the treats left out for them. One even caught one of our log-pile rats the other day - what a good Fox!

Thank you so much for being such a kind and clever Santa, I'm hoping that you will have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Ok, I finally got the young hottie stuffed in the shipping box and have outsourced the delivery to the USPS. I apologize for the delay, however there was a death in the Claus family which threw a bit of a twist on the holiday. You should receive it before the New Year, however. Please let Santa know when it arrives...

I'll be glad to let you know who I really am, but the elves dropped the ball for part of your gift. (We had to chase that ball all over the North Pole, but we've got the sucker now!) The box is going to FedEx tomorrow morning. I hope it's not a day late, but there are twelve days of Christmas, right? As an added bonus gift, you can dope slap me when we finally meet.

No worries on the delay at all! I completely understand and in sad situations like that it would have been ok to wait even longer.

I really am sorry for your loss, and hope the new year brings forth happy memories of your loved one.

You do indeed have a Santa, Rap, and a very fine Santa indeed.

I should note here that I tampered with the list a bit, I inserted myself into the game in order to have an extra player so someone could send a gift to parties who didn't know they were on the list, hence the references to Art and Carol Thieme.

Hi, Santa in Australia with a name not very legible on the customs declaration but thank you for the lovely package, which did arrive in good time. The little ornaments are beautiful and will not be confined to Christmas, and did you make them? And nothing makes me happier than a cookbook and this one looks pretty comprehensive. Thank you, thank you. I hope you are having a Happy Christmas or any such festival as preferred, and good wishes for a happy new year!

the reason the name is not legible is a friend posted the pressie!

yes, I did make the ornaments & am pleased you will make use of the cookbook. If you have any trouble with terms in the cookbook, just ask & I'll try to interpret Aussie English to American.

I do apologise for being behind on this. My labour force has been giving me grief again. They sabotaged the assembly line here in the NOrth Pole again. Blighters. I think we caught the one who did it, but he hasn't copped to it, yet, even after extensive polar water boarding. We will try putting him on the ice rack tomorrow. Friday will be the day it goes out, but because of the issues we've been having, it may be in stages. I hope that is ok. Cheers!

My dear, you have NO idea! I do so beg your pardon for this unavoidable delay in the delivery of your gifts. It was Christmas Eve, I was boarding my slay...ah, sleigh...when a young man in uniform asked me to step aside. They then searched me...ME! SANTA CLAUS!...and searched my bag of presents. The confiscated the little toy drums and little toy trains as not being conducive to good order, and as for the dolls -- well, I have rarely encountered such dirty minds! THEN they threw me into gaol, confiscating the stub of my pipe so I did not even have the solace of bubbles encircling my head like a wreath (I gave up smoke a century back).

I met the most unpleasant people there! If I had my naughty and nice list with me I could have checked it, but I am quite certain that they are on the "naughty" side.

But I was finally freed and the warders all apologised, explaining that an overly zealous airline security person was at fault. I accepted the apology and offered to discipline the clerk for them but they declined my offer of boiling the wretch in oil.

Anyway, your package may not make it in time for your birthday, but you WILL receive it soon.

As for those people I met in prison, well, they shan't be getting any presents for years and years, if ever. That includes the screws.

But I do hope you enjoy yours. I have selected them especially for you, you know.
