For some changes, you need to set the new condition and immediately close and reopen the program in order to make the change "permanent."

In my IE, I think I recall getting a message telling me that needs to be done for some browser changes, but I don't recall needing it to change my homepage. But then I've never allowed Bing on my machine, and I think I was running Win95 the last time I changed homepages.

It's possible it may be required that you restart Firefox in order to make a change in home page "stick" in Firefox.(?)

Almost every Microsoft update will show "Bing" as a recommended (but optional) update, and sometimes there's an option to "install all," so that's probably how you got it. I usually look separately at the critical updates, and almost always install all of them, then go separately to the optionals and allow only what I want of them.

It may be necessary to uninstall Bing (if you can?). Since I've been waiting for them to tell me a reason for having it and have never seen anything but adspeak flatulence, I never installed it so I don't know whether it can be separately uninstalled.

John

You aren't using the "Private Browsing" option are you?

If hijacking continues it may be worth using Avast!'s Browser cleaner (which I believe can now be downloaded, for free, as a standalone application, to remove whatever is doing the hijacking.

Go to CNN.Com
Click on Tools, Options, and select the General tab
Click the button labeled Use current page

If Bing continues to hijack your home page,... JiK will be along shortly.

I have what may be one, or maybe it's two separate problems in FireFox. This is a fairly new version of FireFox, running on Windows 7.

Recently my homepage on FireFox changed from WWW.CNN.COM to (you should pardon the expression) Bing.

I dragged the CNN icon to the HOME icon, which yielded a popup window, "Do you want this to be your homepage?" I clicked yes. This immediately DID change the display to CNN. Success???? No. Next time I got on the web by means of FireFox, the homepage shown was again Bing.

I don't like Bing, and I won't use Bing. I can temporarily get onto Google all right, but, like the homepage change, it won't stick.

So I have two problems, which may at root be one problem.

1. How can I make FireFox call CNN.COM as the homepage? The nominal fix is to drag the CNN.COM icon from its position just at the left end of the navigation input slot to the "little House", the Home button, but that changes the screen to CNN without making a durable change in Homepage.

2. I want the default search engine to be Google, and frankly, if I can I would like to remove Bing from the computer. The Control Panel's Change or Uninstall Programs function doesn't show Bing as even being present.

Anybody know what I can do? JiK?
