A number of times in our warmer periods, Mudcatters have discussed a dedicated community site where some kind of organization could be established for folkie retirement living.

Well, here's just the place to start. A whole ghost town! With acres of land. It's got its own gold mine and opium den. AN extant resort with a number of cabins. AND a distillery, still licensed and easily converrttyible to the manufacture of thick brown brew, I expect.

It is only a short distance northwest of the Reverend Joseph Offer, who by all rights should be its first mayor.

What would you do with it?

So, Amos, how far is the nearest grocery store?

I gotta say, I do like Plumas County. It has some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in California. Lots of cool railroad stuff, too.

Hells Bells that sounds a bargain!

Chainsaw and a few wood-burners for winter.

What about water and sewage?

Couple of big diesel gennies for electricity.

Some nice big diesel 4-wheel-drives to get there - maybe a tanker to haul diesel in.

Growing ground for vegetables?

Probably lots of local hunters/trappers happy to sell meat.

You might even get me to the USA for that!

What's it like for forest fires?

"Old Folkies Home"?

"If You Build It, They Will Might Come"

Hey...I know...pilgramages! We could call it "The HotAway"

Chantey singers mostly go to fiddlers green.

Plumas is a nice, quiet place, Joe. Would you have it filled with noisy Folkies ?

Hmmm, make it a gated community---

My first concern was water. Many a town has become ghosty for lack of it. But Plumas County apparently has lots of it, from rivers to lakes and ponds.

My next concern was climate, especially hot weather. It appears that Plumas County has plenty of snow- a number of 'Roads Closed in Winter' signs - and that usually means that the opposing season has its own extreme temperatures. However, with all those "rivers, lakes and ponds", that should be manageable.

It advertises "Less than a quarter of a million' and then lists the property at $225,000. So which is it? It seems to me that if they are that vague on figures, they may well come down in price. So how about $200,000?

How many Mudcatters will chip in to become share owners? Maybe 100?

I am in!

So, what's the visa situation if I were to buy it?

I could be tempted to sell up and move over - Could it be run as a 'resort' to get more income ? Regular concerts and sessions for paying visitor Folkies ??

This all sounds awfully tempting. I've been thinking for some time that an old folkies' home would be a wonderful idea. We were only talking about it again a couple of days ago! Not sure if we're quite ready to be in one yet, but knowing there is a place would be great!

The visa situation is one to consider. I managed a visa to the UK from Australia because of Rob, but I don't imagine it would be quite so easy to get one for the US. Certainly something to consider!

On the other hand, maybe we should have an Old Folkies Home in each of the major countries at least - one or two in the US, one in the UK, one in Australia etc!

Can you imagine the bad feeling because the 'guitar strumming sniger-snog riters' have taken over the sessions or x doesn't sing in tune any more and 'someone ought to tell her.

Even the best run sessions can get a bit 'samey'. It would have to be a big place to be artistically viable.

Ebbie, I reckon 225,000 IS less than quarter of a million, so whats the problem...

If it's a ghost town does that mean we can sing Sweet William's Ghost?

Thinking about it, a more appropriate song for a one horse ghost town would be something like Ghost Riders in the Sky.

So, Amos, how far is the nearest grocery store?

When we were house hunting in the West of Ireland some years ago, the first two questions we asked about any possible new home were: How far is it to a pint of milk? How far is it to a pint of stout?. Fortunately, in Ireland, the answer is often the same!

Regards
